Book excerpt: Our paper describes the development and preliminary testing of three systems for unobtrusively measuring situation awareness (SA) during dismounted infantry squad-level exercises conducted with immersive Virtual Environment (VE) simulations. The SA measurement systems employ probes administered in the guise of normal radio communications, and systematic subjective ratings of squad leader behaviors and communications. Trials of the systems were conducted with three squads that differed in the experience level of the squad members and whether they had previously functioned together as intact squads. Results indicated that the measurement systems were unobtrusive and measured what they were designed to measure: squad leader SA. Ongoing modifications to the systems are described. Planned applications to other training domains are outlined.

Book excerpt: The Mission Awareness Rating Scale (MARS), a subjective situation awareness (SA) rating scale designed to assess SA content and SA workload, was tested in a series of virtual environment exercises. Sixteen enlisted soldiers, working in teams of four soldiers each, completed four urban combat missions in a virtual night environment designed to simulate the experience of working with night vision goggles - NVG (PVS-7Bs) and aiming lights. In each scenario, a different approach for simulating this NVG environment was used. After each scenario was completed, each soldier completed the MARS instrument. This yielded estimates of the SA level and workload involved in four dimensions of SA - perception, understanding, projection, and knowing what decision to make. The results indicated that MARS significantly and rebustly discriminated among the different approaches, and these SA estimates were congruent with general estimates of SA content and workload while operating at night in the real world, and with the soldier's subjective rankings of the four simulated NVG environments. While promising, MARS must be validated against objective SA measures, both in the virtual environment and in the field environment. However, MARS seems to hold premise as a relatively unobtrusive and effective SA measure.

Book excerpt: The Virtual Reality Applications Center is a national leader in the increasingly important field of applications of virtual reality to the challenges of engineering and science. This DURIP contract provided peripheral equipment for VRAC's C6, a 360-degree immersion device used to display synthetic environments in real time. C6 includes six stereoscopic screens, a three-dimensional sound system, and wireless technologies. C6, which cost over $5 million to design and build, was made possible by support from the Air Force of Scientific Research, the National Science Foundation, Iowa State University and private industry. DURIP funds helped purchase a tracking system, networking hardware, and storage devices crucial to the operation of the system. We are now using the C6 on two major defense related projects applying virtual reality interfaces to improve operational readiness and situational awareness. The first of these projects, sponsored by the Air Force Research Lab's Human Effectiveness Directorate, is investigating the use of collaborative computer immersion to recreate a Joint Battlespace. The second is a multi-year collaboration between a VRAC research team, the Iowa National Guard, and the Iowa Technology Center. The objective of this effort is to investigate, create and evaluate the use of immersive interfaces as tools to improve the operational readiness of Iowa National Guard staff, both Army and Air.

Book excerpt: During a crisis, the efficiency and quickness of the response might mean life or death for the victims. Strong knowledge of the situation and an effective decision-making process are crucial to ensure that the crisis will be solved with the minimum damage to people and goods. Two phases of the crisis are then important to consider: the preparation phase and the response phase. They are crucial, but they currently present many drawbacks that limit their effectiveness. The work presented in this manuscript first identifies some drawbacks and limits of crisis preparation and proposes to use virtual reality (VR) to overcome them. To be prepared, crisis responders must regularly organize training exercises to simulate a crisis and rehearse the plans and procedures to solve it. In this work, we propose VR training environments reproducing sensible sites, in which crisis scenarios can be implemented. The objective is to propose several features: (i) a realistic and adaptable environment with multiple training conditions, (ii) a safe environment so users can test different responses without any risks, (iii) the possibility to train as many times as needed with no further costs, (iv) the possibility to record training sessions to analyze and learn from them, and (v) a multi-player environment in which users from different locations can join. Recent advances in technology have made VR and virtual environments (VE) more and more present in our lives. They can be found in various domains and for multiple purposes (medicine, military, teaching, entertaining...). The question of evaluating the maturity of these VEs then arises, to assess whether VEs are effective for their given purpose. This work thus reviews the existing evaluation systems and uses them to build a new evaluation framework that aims to provide two features: (i) a complete and objective evaluation system to assess the maturity of VEs, and (ii) a guide to help VE designers and developers build performant VEs. Regarding the crisis response phase, the difficulty is to get relevant and faithful knowledge of the situation. Gathering and understanding data is crucial but can be complicated, especially in large-scale crises. Decision-support systems are valuable tools to help analyze this multitude of information. VR can also help with the visualization and understanding of that data. In this context, this work uses the proposed maturity framework to design and implement a VR crisis cell, to improve situational awareness and decision-making. The objectives of such a VE are the following: (i) provide a faithful and updated representation of the crisis, (ii) offer multiple points of view on what is happening on-site, (iii) provide a link with a decision-support system to identify the best response to the crisis, and (iv) offer new visualization and analysis tools to understand voluminous data.
