Book excerpt: Geogrid has been defined as a deformed or nondeformed net-like polymetric material used with foundation, soil, rock, earth, or any other geotechnical engineering-related materials as an integral part of a human-made project, structure, or system. Geogrids are one of the geosynthetics that have seen increased use in railroad applications. In conjunction with design of railroad track at several military installations the question was raised as to the benefit of including a geogrid in the ballast to act as a reinforcement mechanism. The use of geogrids in railroad track applications was investigated to determine if the ballast thickness can be reduced using geogrids. Investigation was made of the advantages and disadvantages of using geogrids along with the possibility of reducing the ballast thickness through the use of a geogrid. All available technical literature applicable to the use of geogrids in railroad track was reviewed. A number of telephone calls and personal contacts were made with people in academia and in the geosynthetics and railroad industries who have been involved with the development, testing, and use of these materials in railroad track. A synopsis of the information that is currently available in relation to the use of geogrids in railroad track reinforcement is presented along with recommendations for the use of geogrids on low traffic density, low speed railroad tracks typical of those found on military installations. The load-bearing capacity, safe train speed, and the levels of noise and vibration, as well as passenger comfort depend on the behaviour of ballast through particle interlocking and the corresponding deformation of this granular assembly. Attrition and breakage of ballast occur progressively under heavy and continual cyclic loading, causing track deterioration and rail misalignment affecting safety, while exacerbating the intensity of track maintenance. In the absence of realistic computational models, the track substructure is traditionally designed using mostly empirical approaches. In this book, the authors present the detailed information on the strength, deformation, and degradation aspects of fresh and recycled ballast under monotonic, cyclic, and impact loading using innovative geotechnical testing devices. A constitutive model for ballast incorporating particle breakage is presented representing a more realistic stress–strain response. The mathematical formulations and numerical models are validated using controlled experimental simulations and fully instrumented field trials. Revised ballast gradation is described to provide greater track resiliency and extended longevity. The book also provides a detailed description of geosynthetics for substructure improvement considering track deterioration caused by particle degradation, fouling, and impeded drainage. New to this second edition are extensive discussions on subgrade soil stabilisation, causes and mechanisms of soil fluidisation (mud pumping) under cyclic loading, and preventive and remedial measures to alleviate undue instability of ballast tracks. This book should prove most beneficial for final-year civil engineering students and for postgraduate teaching and learning. It is an ideal supplement for practising railway engineers and researchers engaged in the challenging tasks of future track design for heavier and faster trains.

The term "Geosynthetics" was recently coined to encompass a diverse range of polymeric products designed for geotechnical purposes. One such purpose is the tensile reinforcement of soil~. As ten sile reinforcement, polymers have been used in the form of textiles, grids, linear strips and single filaments to reinforce earth structures such as road embankments, steep slopes and vertically faced soil retaining walls. A considerable number of retaining structures have been successfully con structed using the tensile reinforcing properties of "geosynthetics" as their primary means of stabilization. Despite such successes sufficient uncertainty exists concerning the performance of these new materials, their manner of interaction with the soil and the new design methods needed, that many authorities are still reticent concerning their use in permanent works. This book represents the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Research Workshop on the "Application of Polymeric Reinforcement in Soil Retaining Struc tures" held at the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario from June 8 to June 12, 1987. The initial concept for the workshop occur red during the ISSMFE Conference in San Francisco in 1985 when a group of geotextile researchers mooted the idea of hoiding a "prediction exercise" to test analytical and design methods for such structures.
