Book USE OF GENERALIZATION PROMOTION STRATEGIES AND VIDEO MODELING TO INCREASE SOCIAL SKILLS ACQUISITION FOR YOUNG CHILDREN WITH AUTISM

Download or read book USE OF GENERALIZATION PROMOTION STRATEGIES AND VIDEO MODELING TO INCREASE SOCIAL SKILLS ACQUISITION FOR YOUNG CHILDREN WITH AUTISM written by Megan A Roberts and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have difficulty with developing and generalizing the social skills necessary for long term success. Social skills deficits can often lead to shortcomings in other areas, and can hinder a child's potential for future independence. Currently, many studies addressing this issue use a train and hope approach to implementation, which does not always produce generalized outcomes. The study sought to determine how video modeling (VM) in conjunction with generalization-promotion strategies can be used to increase social skills acquisition for children with ASD. In this study, the use of generalization-promotion strategies and video modeling to increase social skills acquisition of children with ASD was evaluated by using a multiple baseline across behaviors design. Four students with ASD attending a public school and 11 neurotypical peers, all 8-10 years-old, participated in the study. Three behaviors were targeted based on results from the Autism Social Skills Profile (Bellini, 2006) completed by participants' parents/guardians. The three behaviors targeted were joining an activity, obtaining attention and taking turns. The following elements of the study were evaluated: the success of the video modeling intervention alone and the success of the video modeling intervention with the addition of generalization-promotion strategies, along with the procedural fidelity of the intervention and the social validity of the outcomes. The results of the study suggested video modeling alone produced increases in the training setting, but this result did not generalize to the new setting. Explicit intervention was required to produce generalization. Therefore, video modeling and generalization-promotion supported children with ASD in generalizing their use of learned social skills. Throughout each phase of the study, there was a high level of procedural fidelity, and parents/guardians' and data collectors' social validity survey responses suggested the interventions and outcomes were socially significant to the participants. Maintenance data suggested that participants were able to maintain the learned skills following the completion of the intervention. There were limitations to this research design, resulting in recommendations for future research.

Book Teaching Children with Autism Social Skills Using Video Modelling

Download or read book Teaching Children with Autism Social Skills Using Video Modelling written by Joanne Hei Man Wong and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Video modelling (VM) combined with video embedded instructions were used to teach social skills to four children aged between ten to fifteen who were diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. The aim of this study was to contribute towards the existing literature on the efficacy of VM. In addition to this purpose, this study focused on programming for response and stimuli generalisation through the videos created and the intervention procedures. A multiple baseline design across participants and social skills was used. Results showed the intervention was effective at teaching responding to greetings, personal space and verbal request. The intervention effects were questionable for teaching requesting a turn. All the participants generalised the social skill across different stimuli. Response generalisation was only applicable to three out of four participants, and two of the participants demonstrated successful response generalisation. Despite no response generalisation occurred for the third participant, response variation was observed. These results suggest that a simple intervention of VM paired with instructions can be highly effective at teaching social skills and promoting generalisation of the skills. The limitations and implications of this research are also discussed.

Book Teaching Generalized Attending to Name to Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder Using a Point of view Video Model

Download or read book Teaching Generalized Attending to Name to Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder Using a Point of view Video Model written by Brittany Hunter and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social and communicative deficits are one of the hallmark traits of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). One of the deficits associated with ASD is attending to a social partner in response to name. Responding to name is important for safety and social reasons. Though responding to name is seen as incredibly important and is often one of the first skills targeted in a child's program, current strategies focus on teaching this response at an instructional table and do not promote generalization to a more natural environment. Video modeling has been demonstrated to be an efficient and least intrusive method of prompting for children with ASD because it limits the number of stimuli in the environment. Point-of-view video modeling further limits the number or stimuli and may prove to be effective in teaching the discrete skill of attending to an adult in response to name. A multiple probe design was utilized to determine the efficacy of using a point-of-view video modeling to teach three young children with ASD to respond to their name. Due to the COVID-19, the current study was terminated before the experiment could be completed. Of the collected data, there is some evidence to support the use of point-of-view video models as a method for teaching attending in response to name to children with ASD.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Video modeling, video feedback, and video self-modeling are interventions developed to increase appropriate communication and play skills in children with autism spectrum disorder. In research completed between 1989 and 2013, children between the ages of 2 and 15 years old with autism spectrum disorder were participants in studies completed to study the effectiveness of these interventions. The majority of these studies concluded an increase in the target behavior or behaviors. A few studies reported inconclusive results due to modification made to the study or mixed results of effectiveness among the studies' participants. Limitations of these studies include small number of participants, use of prompts and reinforcement in some studies, age of participants and limited review of generalization of target skills. Suggestions for further studies include extensive research on generalization of target skills, larger groups of participants and study of older participants with autism spectrum disorder."--leaf 3.

Book Reaching Out Joining in

Download or read book Reaching Out Joining in written by Mary Jane Weiss and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important yet difficult skills for children with autism to learn is effective social interaction. This book introduces social skills programs to parents of preschool- and kindergarten-aged children diagnosed with one of the Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD), including Autistic Disorder, Asperger's Disorder, and PDD: Not Otherwise Specified. The book is based on the authors' decades of clinical experience using Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), a proven educational method, to teach social skills at home and school. This book focuses on four broad topics: play skills; the language of social skills; understanding another person's perspective; functioning in an inclusive classroom. This book helps parents to work with their child's strengths to improve social skills. Following the suggestions and exercises in this book, parents can teach children to: pretend-play, use toys appropriately, know when to use conventional responses like -- excuse me -- tell jokes, recognise that others' feelings and thoughts are different from their own, and initiate social interaction with peers. Included are tips for using games, modelling, rewards, role play, videos, activity schedules, and social stories to teach social skills and make the learning experience fun for parents and children. A case study of one family's efforts and successes provides a real-life example that's informative and reassuring. Appendices listing resources such as books, games, and activities give parents additional material to explore.

Book The Impact of Video Modeling and Peer Mentoring of Social Skills for Middle School Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders in Inclusive Settings

Download or read book The Impact of Video Modeling and Peer Mentoring of Social Skills for Middle School Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders in Inclusive Settings written by Christine Rose Ogilvie and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the behavioral expectations of students by teachers and peers in middle school inclusive classrooms and characteristics inherent to students with ASD, the purpose of this study was to explore the impact of video modeling and peer mentoring of five critical social skills for inclusion on middle school students with ASD. Specifically, the extent to which the combination of video modeling and peer mentoring of five critical social skills would increase the level of demonstration of these skills in the general education inclusion setting was investigated. Because individuals with ASD exhibit limited social communication skills, those skills necessary especially at the middle school level to understand the "hidden curriculum", social skills instruction has been deemed important (APA, 2004; Smith-Myles & Simpson). The current multiple baseline across subjects study was grounded in the research on video modeling (Bellini & Akullian, 2007) and peer mentoring (Fuchs & Fuchs, 2005; Maheady, Harper, & Mallette, 2001) as methods of providing social skills instruction for middle school students with ASD (Goldstein & McGinnis, 1997; Smith-Myles & Simpson, 2001). The impact of the video models and peer mentors was measured using the level of demonstration of five critical social skills on three middle school aged students with ASD. All three students with ASD were included in at least one general education classroom. The results of this investigation indicated that the combination of video modeling and peer mentoring of critical social skills positively impacted the levels of demonstration of the skills of students with ASD. While results varied, all three students with ASD increased their levels of demonstration of the targeted critical social skills.

Book The Effectiveness of Using Video Modeling to Improve the Social Skills in Students with Autism

Download or read book The Effectiveness of Using Video Modeling to Improve the Social Skills in Students with Autism written by Michelle Haren and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to observe and record the effectiveness of video modeling to improve social skills in students with autism. This study used a pre and posttest design in an elementary special education classroom for students with autism. ages ranged from 8 to 12 years old during the fall trimester of the 2009-2010 school year. A pretest was administered to determine where each student social skills area. The parents and associates administered a posttest to determine how much growth was made during the study. The classroom associates and the students' teacher kept data on the frequency with which a student displayed a correct response or behavior during a learned social setting. The students watched a total of five videos, over a ten week period. The data from the pre and posttests, and the frequency data sheets showed a slight increase in the use of the learned social skills by the students identified for this study and therefore supported my hypothesis.

Book Using Video prompting and BST to Promote Social Skills in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Download or read book Using Video prompting and BST to Promote Social Skills in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder written by and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the present study was to examine the effectiveness of implementing a combined and integrative Behavior Skills Training (BST) and video-prompting paradigm. The training focused on enhancing social interactions and fostering the development of age-appropriate social skills in children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This package included explicit training for generalization, as a means of fostering skill acquisition across untrained people and settings. Social initiation and reciprocal play are fundamental aspects of sustaining and maintaining relationships therefore, the training focused on teaching these two behaviors. The researcher used a quasi-single subject research design to analyze and measure the effectiveness of the intervention. Overall, the training was successful in increasing both participants independent skill acquisition of the target behaviors however, only one client was able to generalize the skills to the target population.

Book Use of Video Modeling with Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Download or read book Use of Video Modeling with Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders written by Blake Thomas Plankers and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to determine if video modeling is an effective strategy in teaching social skills to high school students with Autism Spectrum Disorders and which teaching strategies are best conjoined with it. This study compared the frequency of specific social behaviors that contribute to success in a classroom setting. Three situations were observed: 1) a student was exposed to video modeling designed by the researcher paired with Social Stories (TM); 2) a student was exposed to the researcher's video modeling paired with prompts and positive reinforcement, and; 3) a student was exposed to the regular social skills instruction that other student receive in a resource setting. Data were collected using the Prosocial Behaviors Academic Checklist (PBAC). Near or at the end of the study, a survey asking for information about changes in specific behaviors was given to the students' other teachers. The data collected suggested that each intervention conjoined with video modeling is more effective for certain social behaviors, but overall more effective than the regular social skills instruction. Data collected from the surveys did not clearly indicated whether the participants generalized the targeted behaviors.

Book The Impact of Video Modeling Combined with Skillstreaming Teaching Procedures on the Social Interaction Skills of Middle School aged Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Download or read book The Impact of Video Modeling Combined with Skillstreaming Teaching Procedures on the Social Interaction Skills of Middle School aged Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders written by Onur Emre Kocaoz and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of an intervention package that combined Skillstreaming procedures for the development of social skills with the use of video modeling for middle school students identified with ASD. Specifically, the purpose of this study was to determine if the video modeling intervention package has an impact on social skill performance of three middle school-aged students with ASD. A multiple probe design across participants was employed to assess the effects of the video modeling intervention package on two beginning social skills (i.e., initiate greetings and initiate a conversation). The participants were three middle school-aged students with ASD enrolled in a self-contained classroom. The dependent variable was the percentage of correct social skills components performed when greeting the teacher and initiating a conversation within in the first 10 minutes of class each morning. The independent variable was an intervention package that included video modeling and direct instruction for each social skill component with Skillstreaming procedures (i.e., modeling, role playing, feedback). The results of this research indicated that all three students improved their social skills performance following the implementation of the video modeling intervention package. Furthermore, during the maintenance phase, the social skills performance of each student was maintained. Recommendations for further study and for teachers of students with ASD are presented.

Book Using Social Stories Video Modeling and a Home Program to Increase the Functional and Meaningful Communicative Attempts for a Child with Autism

Download or read book Using Social Stories Video Modeling and a Home Program to Increase the Functional and Meaningful Communicative Attempts for a Child with Autism written by Rachel Kubat and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was designed to answer the research question, will the use of two intervention strategies, video modeling and social stories, in conjunction with a home program, significantly increase the functional and meaningful communicative attempts of a child with ASD? A child with autism who was primarily non-verbal and who was receiving services at MSUM was the research participant for this study. The clinician used the first two sessions to collect baseline data and the subsequent two sessions to teach the client and his mother how to use the two intervention strategies. The clinician documented progress over the next ten sessions using a combination of both intervention strategies. The two final sessions were used for post-treatment. After each session, the clinician provided the family with a home program routine. The researcher concluded, the combined use of these strategies increased the functional and meaningful communicative attempts for this patient. This study used descriptive statistics and a comparison of pre-treatment data to post-treatment data on each of the communicative functions studied.
