Download or read book Hand Book of Explosives written by E. I. Du Pont de Nemours and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hand Book of Explosives: Instructions in the Use of Explosives for Clearing Land, Planting and Cultivating Trees, Drainage, Ditching, Subsoiling and Other Purposes By the prodigal use of labor and man power, lands have been cleared, drained and tilled for many years. Larger areas are yet to be cleared and further improvements to be made in millions of acres in order to supply the ever-increasing demand for food and clothing. Man is too intelligent and valuable for other purposes to have his efforts and energy entirely consumed by the heavy forms of brute drudgery that can be better done by the employment of modern labor savers. His knowledge, intelligence, and energy are much more valuable to himself, the community, and the country at large, when employed in directing the forces which have been placed at his disposal by nature and science. Moreover, it is now practically impossible to develop land by man power alone, because of the great scarcity, at present, of labor. Labor is indeed so scarce, and when, available, so expensive, that it is becoming increasingly difficult to progress in any industrial field. Often even such labor is unavailable as is needed to install labor-saving devices which would effect a saving in the future. In many cases there seems to be no escape from this condition. But in developing land, explosives are always available and the demand for increased amounts can be quickly supplied for the job. No matter how difficult it may be to get men, the work can be done by these modern conservers of man power. They have proven most efficient in doing the classes of work described in this book. They clear the land so that the modern horse and power drawn farm equipment can be used to advantage as they cannot be on poorly cleared lands. Explosives are now included with horses, steam, gasoline, and electricity as a means of saving man power and thereby of saving money. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Explosive Compounds: Machine Rock Drills and Blasting There is at the present time 110 full work in English on the subjects here treated, though many valuable Monographs and Papers, especially on Explosive Compounds, and on the phenomena attendant on Explosion and Detonation, have appeared within the last decade in Pamphlet form, and in the papers read before the Engineering Societies in England and in America. It is the hope of the author that this work may be found in some measure to supply the want of a general Treatise upon questions heretofore studied and discussed only in detached and separate form. If but a beginning in this direction has been made, such beginning may at least serve as an Index for the future study and elaboration of others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Explosives The early uses of gunpowder were confined to warfare, and no use seems to have been made of it for blasting purposes for several hundred years. It was originally used in the form of crude hand grenades, and probably was at first of most use in striking terror into the enemy. Cannon were first used by the English in I 346 at the battle of Crecy. But seem to have been used a few years prior to this in the hispano-moorish wars.
