Book Separable English Phrasal Verbs

Download or read book Separable English Phrasal Verbs written by Sophia J. Dongilli and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to teach phrasal verbs to L2 learners of English has been the subject of debate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) courses and materials alike. These multi-part verbs, consisting of a verb and one or more particles, convey a new lexical meaning different from their individual parts. Further complicating this is the fact that some transitive phrasal verbs can be separated from their particles to varying degrees by a direct object. Though variables affecting verb-particle separation lie below the level of consciousness for most native speakers, they make the acquisition of particle placement difficult for L2 English language learners. Additionally, the presentation of these verbs in EFL textbooks and university English language programs (ELPs) is inadequate. TEFL textbooks tend to place emphasis on the lexical acquisition of phrasal verbs, ignoring separable versus non-separable distinctions. However, native English speakers separate phrasal verbs from their particles about 66.5% of the time in spoken conversation. In order to determine whether traditional textbook problems associated with phrasal verb presentation persist, I analyzed eleven TEFL textbooks used in Kansas State University's ELP. I also administered a grammaticality judgment survey in order to find out whether L1 Spanish speakers of L2 English view separation of transitive phrasal verbs and their particles to be grammatical. L1 Spanish Speakers of L2 English are disadvantaged by the fact that their native language is verb-framed, meaning that it does not make use of particles in the same way that English does. It is for this reason that native Spanish-speakers of L2 English constitute the experimental group in this study. The results of the TEFL textbook analysis reveal that none of the eleven textbooks analyzed could stand alone in the classroom to effectively teach phrasal verbs. The results of the grammaticality judgment survey show that L1 Spanish speakers of L2 English differ at a statistically significant level from L1 American English speakers in their acceptability of phrasal verb-particle separation. These findings have pedagogical implications for TEFL instructors, textbook writers, and English language programs, and demonstrate the need for more extensive and authentic phrasal verb instruction.

Book The Avoidance of Phrasal Verbs in Second Language Acquisition

Download or read book The Avoidance of Phrasal Verbs in Second Language Acquisition written by Shawna Saari and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using and understanding phrasal verbs is essential to the ESL learner in order to fully comprehend the language and sound native-like. “No one can speak or understand English, at least the informal register, without the knowledge of phrasal verbs” (Celce-Murcia & Larsen-Freeman et. al, 1999, p.426). However, phrasal verbs are often misunderstood or avoided by the learner. In this research, I emphasize the importance of phrasal verbs and the need for non-native speakers to use them, especially in informal settings. To begin this article, I will discuss the importance of phrasal verbs and their common use among native speakers. Next, I will investigate how early and how often these idiomatic phrases are introduced into the ESL curriculum. I will then look at how and why second language learners may unknowingly avoid or choose to not use these idiomatic phrases. Finally, I will propose an action research study to discover whether introducing a limited number of phrasal verbs into the beginning ESL classroom will result in student’s ability to understand and use phrasal verbs more frequently.

Exercises are included to test your knowledge on the most commonly used phrasal verbs. Cross that bridge and start mastering the language today. About phrasal verbs Phrasal verbs, or multi - word verbs as they are often referred to, can be rather daunting for non natives of the English language. A mistake in using the wrong particle or the wrong word order can completely change the intended meaning. This can lead to misunderstandings which can either be horrific or hilarious. Students of the English language are not expected to be able to remember all the phrasal verbs - they are too numerous - but they should be familiar with the most common ones and they should also be able to recognise their meanings in context. Phrasal verbs play an important role in the English language. There is no getting away from them. Every time natives speak they use them. Take a look at the ones below. Did you know that the following two sentences have different meanings? Peter hung up after a few minutes = he ended the telephone call. Peter hung up on me after a few minutes = he ended the call by interrupting the conversation abruptly, angrily and rudely. How about this one? I saw through him and I saw him through. Both have different meanings. I saw through him = I understood his deception/the mask he wore, whereas I saw him through = I gave him my support during a difficult period of his life. Now look at these two examples: Pretty flabbergasting! I've gone off cheese = I no longer like cheese. The cheese has gone off = the cheese is not fresh anymore. It is not good to eat. If you eat it you could become sick. The alarm clock has just gone off = Can you turn it off please? I want to sleep for another few minutes. Does this mean that the alarm clock is not fresh anymore? NOOOO!!!!! Does it mean the alarm clock doesn't like someone or something anymore? NOOO!!! Well what does it mean you may be asking yourself. You should be able to understand from the context. Out of context 'to go off' is devoid of any meaning whatsoever. In the case of the alarm clock, it means, it rang. Another example is: He turned on me = he either attacked me physically or verbally. He turned me on = he caused me to become excited. Now can you see why the wrong use can lead to numerous misunderstandings? Phrasal verbs can be separable, that is, as seen in the example 'he turned me on', and inseparable as in the example 'he turned on me'. There are also phrasal verbs which are both separable and inseparable Example: She took off her jacket/she took her jacket off = she removed her jacket. In this book you will learn and become familiar with each phrasal verb type. Good clear examples are set out to illustrate the meanings. ABOUT THE AUTHOR The author has been a teacher of English as a foreign language for over 18 years. Born in the North East of Scotland, she has spent most of her adult life abroad, teaching students of various nationalities how to speak English effectively.
