Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1900 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER II. COMMON ERRORS. Grammatical correctness is the first necessity in composition; but it is not intended here to enter into the technicalities of grammar. A practical knowledge of grammar must be presupposed in those studying composition; but a practical knowledge of grammar need not imply a knowledge of school-book rules: the grammar of one's native language is acquired, by those who live among cultivated people, without any such study; and indeed many of our best writers have no knowledge of grammar as a science, and would find extreme difficulty in parsing a word that a small board-school child would know all about at once. You say "John and I are going," not "John and I is going," because the first phrase sounds right, not because you know that the rule is that with two subjects the verb is in the plural. Thus the use is not governed by rule, but one recognises what the rule must be by what one says. But, whether a writer have an instinctive knowledge of grammar or a school knowledge of grammar, he will find, because of the small amount of inflection in English, that it is a language peculiarly conducive to error. In Latin, though there are certain customs in the arrangement of the words, such as that of generally placing the adjective after its substantive and the verb late in the sentence, yet, because of the linking of the words together by their inflexions or terminations, the words of a sentence might be thrown into almost any order without really disturbing the sense. But in English the sense depends entirely on the order in which the words are arranged. Hence the chief source of error in writing English is the bad arrangement of the words in a sentence, to the confusion of the sense, --" miscollocation," as it is...

Book The Use and Abuse of Literature

Download or read book The Use and Abuse of Literature written by Marjorie Garber and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2012-04-03 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this deep and engaging meditation on the usefulness and uselessness of reading in the digital age, Harvard English professor Marjorie Garber aims to reclaim “literature” from the periphery of our personal, educational, and professional lives and restore it to the center, as a radical way of thinking. But what is literature anyway, how has it been understood over time, and what is its relevance for us today? Who gets to decide what the word means? Why has literature been on the defensive since Plato? Does it have any use at all, other than serving as bourgeois or aristocratic accoutrements attesting to one’s worldly sophistication and refinement of spirit? What are the boundaries that separate it from its “commercial” instance and from other more mundane kinds of writing? Is it, as most of us assume, good to read, much less study—and what would that mean?

Book Handbook of English Composition

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of English Composition: A Compilation of Standard Rules and Usage The aim of this handbook is to present under one cover the main requisites of good English, with the hope that it will be found a convenient code for accurate expression. The book is intended as a companion to a pocket dictionary. It is in no way offered as a substitute for either grammar or rhetoric, but rather as a brief, compact book of reference. It is intended to include standard rules and usage, and a few fundamental processes, - all designed to secure accuracy and something of effectiveness in use of the essentials of English composition. The aim has been to keep statements and illustrations, notes and exceptions, compact and yet definite, clear, illuminating, and interesting. An attempt has been made to include rules that are often violated, that settle doubtful points, that provide for fine distinctions, that point out the minute details of the printed page, and that attract attention to the simplicity and eloquence of English speech.
