Book excerpt: In recent years, U.S. officials have shown increased interest in transferring certain social welfare functions of the U.S. government to nongovernmental organizations, both commercial and not for profit. Such organizations have expressed interest in and, according to U.S. officials, have demonstrated the ability to use federal funds to serve a wider pool of beneficiaries and help meet the U.S. governments objectives in a variety of areas. One of these areas is the delivery of U.S. foreign assistance to developing countries and countries transitioning from communism to market-oriented democracy. Many nongovernmental organizations active in international development have years of experience working overseas and have received millions of dollars in funds from private sources as well as the U.S. government for this work.

Download or read book Protected Areas Sustainable Land written by Estienne Rodary and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protected areas, such as nature reserves, national parks and marine conservation areas, are the main tool of nature conservation policies and are increasing on a worldwide scale. They are one of the main forms of environmental planning, and conservation institutions have increasing means at their disposal. At the same time, the goals of protected areas have become more diverse, with the involvement of more stakeholders and complex institutional frameworks. Giving an account of the extension and diversification of protected areas, this book determines whether these two processes constitute a breakdown in conservation policies. Economists, ecologists, lawyers, anthropologists and geographers analyse the various trends which are fundamental to the future of protected areas to reveal a conflicting scene where narrative around cooperation and integration hides competition between different interests. This book shows how protected areas are emerging as zones of divergent experimentations of sustainable development rather than lasting forms of integrative environmental management.
Download or read book Exporting Security written by Derek S. Reveron and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given U.S. focus on the continuing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is easy to miss that the military does much more than engage in combat. On any given day, military engineers dig wells in East Africa, medical personnel provide vaccinations in Latin America, and special forces mentor militaries in southeast Asia. To address today's security challenges, the military partners with civilian agencies, NGOs, and the private sector both at home and abroad. By doing so, the United States seeks to improve its international image, strengthen the state sovereignty system by training and equipping partners’ security forces, prevent localized violence from escalating into regional crises, and protect U.S. national security by addressing underlying conditions that inspire and sustain violent extremism. In Exporting Security, Derek Reveron provides a comprehensive analysis of the shift in U.S. foreign policy from coercive diplomacy to cooperative military engagement, examines how and why the U.S. military is an effective tool of foreign policy, and explores the methods used to reduce security deficits around the world.
