Book excerpt: Le Conseil Général des Landes a équipé, depuis l’année 2001/2002 tous les collégiens de troisièmes et tous leurs professeurs d’ordinateurs portables. La littérature scientifique sur les effets de l’utilisation de l’ordinateur en classe indique que cela favorise l’usage des pédagogies constructivistes mais que les technologies sont peu utilisées ou sous-utilisées par les enseignants. La sociologie de P. Bourdieu présente des outils théoriques fructueux pour décrire ce qui conditionne les usages de l’informatique en classe. Dans cette perspective, nous avons émis l’hypothèse que ce sont les manifestations d’habitus propres à des disciplines et à des positions symboliques dans le champ qui vont expliquer l’usage ou le non-usage d’ordinateurs en classe. Un questionnaire permet d’établir que les classes d’âges 20/30 ans et 50/65 ans utilisent l’ordinateur en classe plutôt moins souvent que les autres classes d’âges tandis que celle des 30/40 ans plutôt plus. Les disciplines qui utilisent le plus les technologies dans leur cours sont l’histoire géographie, les sciences et les arts. En conséquence, l’usage de l’informatique en classe est la manifestation d’un ensemble de dispositions professionnelles et techniques. La posture des IPR vis-à-vis de l’informatique influence les actions des enseignants qui partagent les catégories de perceptions de leurs IPR. Le corps d’inspection favorise une utilisation des ordinateurs en classe en organisant des formations et en définissant des objectifs de façon pondérée et inégale selon les disciplines. Les IPR et les chefs d’établissements créent un champ de réalisation pour les enseignants.

One of Jacques Derrida’s most provocative works, Life Death deconstructs a deeply rooted dichotomy of Western thought: life and death. In rethinking the relationship between life and death, Derrida undertakes a multi-disciplinary analysis of a range of topics across philosophy, linguistics, and the life sciences. Derrida gave this seminar over fourteen sessions between 1975 and 1976 at the École normale supérieure in Paris to prepare students for the agrégation, a notoriously competitive exam. The theme for the exam that year was “Life and Death,” but Derrida made a critical modification to the title by dropping the coordinating conjunction. The resulting title of Life Death poses a philosophical question about the close relationship between life and death. Through close readings of Freudian psychoanalysis, the philosophy of Nietzsche and Heidegger, French geneticist François Jacob, and epistemologist Georges Canguilhem, Derrida argues that death must be considered neither as the opposite of life nor as the truth or fulfillment of it, but rather as that which both limits life and makes it possible. Derrida thus not only questions traditional understandings of the relationship between life and death but also ultimately develops a new way of thinking about what he calls “life death.”

Two major points are made in this general picture. The first is that environmental campaigns in Asia tend to have a local focus; they react to very concrete problems in the immediate neighbourhood and as such usually people are engaged in a cause for practical rather than idealistic reasons. Such can be seen in case studies from the volume dealing with campaigns against logging and tree plantations, tourist facilities and factories and in support or defence of nature reserves. This pattern is in marked contrast to the profile of the most successful Western movements (in terms of fund-raising at least) for whom the focus is on perceived problems in distant parts of the world. The second point is evidence in several of the case studies in the volume, namely that environmental campaigns cannot be understood in terms of environmental issues alone. Rather, they should be regarded as a form of cultural critique and frequently are a form of political resistance in situations where open political action is too risky.
