Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maine, A Guide 'Down East, '. PREFACE AS THE perspective broadens on the picture of the American scene, past and present, being portrayed by the Federal Writers Project of the Works Progress Administration in the American Guide Series, the State by State development of this vast panorama now brings into focus the Nations northeast corner. How strong a Iight Maines contribution can stand depends to a great extent upon ones point of view. Whatever the point of view, it should be remembered that the presentation of the many diverse eIements embodied in a State the size of Maine in a single volume is necessarily of a general nature, under the rather rigid requirements of a guidebook therefore certain phases may not seem to be treated in this book as thoroughly as they merit. An attempt has been made, however, to capture the spirit of Maine life and to high light the Maine scene for the visitor, without being either romantic or encyclopedic. The Maine staff of the Writers Project, like those of other States, has had its own particular trials and tribulations in preparing a Guide. In presenting facts about Maine, the staff supreme effort at accuracy often bogged down before several accepted authorities who were at variance . on a given point. Items accepted as fact were wcasionalIy found to be legendary.

Her books enfold…whisper, ‘Let me tell you about a woman who…’ They find a secret place in each of us and bring it gently to the surface.” –Salem Statesman Journal Suzanne felt the tears press at her eyes as the dream-state drifted away–taking with it the sight of the man she loved. Awake, she blinked back the tears. This was her life now. The sounds of the women and oxen, those were real. And the darkness–her darkness. She lay inside it, resigned. She was not a wife reaching out for her husband but a widow, a blind widow, wistful and full of desire. FACING CHALLENGES AND LOSS, A COMMUNITY OF EXTRAORDINARY WOMEN FIGHT TO OVERCOME THE PAIN OF THE PAST – AND EMBRACE THE FUTURE. When blind and widowed Suzanne Cullver reaches California with a group of women who have survived tragedy on the Oregon Trail, she sets her mind on doing for herself all that must be done. Though she cannot see, she rejects offers of assistance, unwittingly risking her children’s safety – and her own. Her companions blindly falter as well, held hostage by their own pasts. As Suzanne attempts to control her life in Shasta City, Ruth defends against past errors, failing to see how she limits love. Meanwhile, Mazy’s vision seems to be permanently clouded by her late husband’ s betrayal. But when a young stagedriver risks all for a Wintu Indian, his life becomes entangled with the turnaround women – and together they are changed forever as they discover that No Eye Can See all the good God has in store for those who love Him.

Book excerpt: In The Mirror of Her Dreams, the dazzling first volume of Mordant’s Need, New York Times bestselling author Stephen R. Donaldson introduced us to the richly imagined world of Mordant, where mirrors are magical portals into places of beauty and terror. Now, with A Man Rides Through, Donaldson brings the story of Terisa Morgan to an unforgettable conclusion. . . . Aided by the powerful magic of Vagel, the evil Arch-Imager, the merciless armies are marching against the kingdom of Mordant. In its hour of greatest need, two unlikely champions emerge. One is Geraden, whose inability to master the simplest skills of Imagery has made him a laughingstock. The other is Terisa Morgan, transferred to Mordant from a Manhattan apartment by Geraden’s faulty magic. Together, Geraden and Terisa discover undreamed-of talents within themselves—talents that make them more than a match for any Imager . . . including Vagel himself. Unfortunately, those talents also mark them for death. Branded as traitors, they are forced to flee the castle for their lives. Now, all but defenseless in a war-torn countryside ravaged by the vilest horrors Imagery can spawn, Geraden and Terisa must put aside past failures and find the courage to embrace their powers—and their love—before Vagel can spring his final trap.
