Book US Policy in Southwest Asia

Download or read book US Policy in Southwest Asia written by Robert G. Lawrence and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over-reliance upon military action as the predominant instrument of US foreign policy in Southwest Asia is the danger against which this essay; warns. Colonel Robert G. Lawrence, is less troubled by questions of US military strength than by policymakers' insensitivity to the historical, religious, and regional dynamics of Southwest Asia in general and the Persian Gulf states in particular. Security assistance, although important, has been mistakenly considered the essential element of US policy when it should complement, not constitute US diplomacy. Too long, we have failed to understand the Arab view of the world in which they live. Our policymakers have slighted the complexity and the diversity of Arab religions, politics, and history-forces which inform and direct Arab actions. Colonel Lawrence directly addresses the tough questions, such as US support of Israel, widely inconsistent policies for foreign military sales, US failure in Iran, and US inaction during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Interviewing over fifty prominent Arab government officials, military leaders, diplomats, scholars, and businessmen, Colonel Lawrence brings immediacy and insight to this frank, somewhat controversial study of Southwest Asia.

Lawrence directly addresses tough questions, such as U.S. support of Israel, widely inconsistent policies for foreign military sales, U.S. failure in Iran, and U.S. inaction during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. A frank and somewhat controversial plea for an intelligent appraisal of U.S. policy in this region.

Book U S Military Strategy in the Gulf Routledge Revivals

Download or read book U S Military Strategy in the Gulf Routledge Revivals written by Amitav Acharya and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-02 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1989, this title explores the nature and dimensions of the U.S. strategy in the Gulf in the formative years that followed the fall of the Shah, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the outbreak of the Iran-Iraq war. It describes the formation of the U.S. Rapid Deployment Joint Task Force and the U.S. Central Command, their force structure and the network of U.S. bases and facilities in the region. The role of pro-Western countries in the wider region, in particular Pakistan, Egypt, Jordan, and Israel, in the formulation of strategy is discussed in detail, along with a more general assessment of the achievements and failures of U.S. strategy in the Gulf towards the end of the 1980s. In light of the persistent struggle for peace within the Middle East, this is a timely reissue, which will be of great interest to students researching U.S. military strategy over the past thirty years.

Book US Foreign Policy Towards the Middle East

Download or read book US Foreign Policy Towards the Middle East written by Bernd Kaussler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-16 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a realist critique of US foreign policy towards the Middle East in the past decade. It critically examines four core foundations of contemporary US Middle East policy: US relations with Saudi Arabia after the Arab Spring; US diplomacy towards Iran and the Obama administration’s policy of engagement; the road to, and aftermath of, the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq; and US policy towards nuclear-armed Israel. Because of a closely guarded bipartisan consensus, these four core foundations of contemporary US Middle East policy have largely evaded public criticism and scrutiny. This book argues that US strategy towards the Middle East has rarely been guided by order, stability and the national interest. Rather, successive administrations have created a house of cards built on a series of deceptions and constructed perceptions or myths. Combined, these four aspects of US Middle East policy have ushered in a decade of political violence, instability, sectarian divisions and an imbalance of power which has culminated in the territorial disintegration of Iraq and countries in the Levant as well as the rise of ISIS. Moving forward requires a rational pursuit of the national interest based on realist principles. This book will be of much interest to students of US foreign policy, Middle Eastern politics, security studies and IR in general.
