Book I Wonder as I Wander

Download or read book I Wonder as I Wander written by Ron Pen and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2010-09-24 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louisville native John Jacob Niles (1892–1980) is considered to be one of our nation’s most influential musicians. As a composer and balladeer, Niles drew inspiration from the deep well of traditional Appalachian and African American folk songs. At the age of sixteen Niles wrote one of his most enduring tunes, “Go ’Way from My Window,” basing it on a song fragment from a black farm worker. This iconic song has been performed by folk artists ever since and may even have inspired the opening line of Bob Dylan’s “It Ain’t Me Babe.” In I Wonder as I Wander: The Life of John Jacob Niles, the first full-length biography of Niles, Ron Pen offers a rich portrait of the musician’s character and career. Using Niles’s own accounts from his journals, notebooks, and unpublished autobiography, Pen tracks his rise from farm boy to songwriter and folk collector extraordinaire. Niles was especially interested in documenting the voices of his fellow World War I soldiers, the people of Appalachia, and the spirituals of African Americans. In the 1920s he collaborated with noted photographer Doris Ulmann during trips to Appalachia, where he transcribed, adapted, and arranged traditional songs and ballads such as “Pretty Polly” and “Black Is the Color of My True Love’s Hair.” Niles’s preservation and presentation of American folk songs earned him the title of “Dean of American Balladeers,” and his theatrical use of the dulcimer is credited with contributing to the popularity of that instrument today. Niles’s dedication to the folk music tradition lives on in generations of folk revival artists such as Jean Ritchie, Joan Baez, and Oscar Brand. I Wonder as I Wander explores the origins and influences of the American folk music resurgence of the 1950s and 1960s, and finally tells the story of a man at the forefront of that movement.

Book excerpt: Leaving the Mohawk Valley of New York colony young Logan McGill, the superb frontiersman Davey Duncan and the irascible Turley travel to the wilds of the Ohio country wishing only to hunt and trap. But they soon learn that their peaceful intentions are not enough as they are harassed by blood thirsty savages, a vengeful antagonist, and ultimately become swept up in a brutal frontier war. After rescuing the beautiful Elizabeth Hay from her savage kidnappers the four seek refuge with a small, destitute army of Virginia militia. Led by the young and brave but inexperienced Colonel George Washington the Virginians must wrest possession of the forks of the Ohio from the French. Marching through a damp night they surprise a camp of French soldiers and fire the first shots that reignite the decades long conflict between England and France over control of North America. And once again numerous Indian nations are forced to choose which side to fight for. Though the Indians themselves realize that whoever wins, it is the Redman who will be the ultimate loser. From the Iroquois villages of the Mohawk Valley to the skirmish at Jumonvilles Glen and the Battle of Fort Necessity, through General Edward Braddocks fateful expedition to Duquesne, The Forks of the Ohio brings to life the opening events of The French and Indian War as related by Logan McGill. The saga of Logan and his companions continues in the sequel, Holy Sacrament, where the bloody struggle shifts to the New York frontier and the Battle of Lake George.

Book excerpt: Have we over complicated, over systematized, and over formalized making disciples? When our hearts are changed by Christ, it’s natural that we should want to help others come to know Him too. And while Scripture clearly sets forth how to do so, modern Western society has formalized, professionalized, and systemized disciplemaking to a point that it seems too complicated to practice. What happened to the simple, heart-to-heart ministries of the New Testament? In Walk with Me, you’ll return to the essential biblical practices that help people grow as Christ-followers in simple, slow, and deep ways. Learn how you can connect with your neighbors, coworkers, or anyone you want to reach with the gospel in ways that are relational and Spirit-led. You’ll learn five kingdom principles that will reshape how you can pass on the faith: In heart-to-heart ways By keeping it simple By going slow By building deep By living on mission
