Book excerpt: Excerpt from United States Dependencies: Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Panama Republic As a people, for the Government of the United States con sists of the sum total of its citizens, we have undertaken to do certain very large things for certain of our neighbor coun tries; namely, see that they do not indulge destructively in internal strife, in some cases see that they pay their national monetary obligations, and in all instances protect them against external attack. The countries in whose interests we have assumed voluntarily or by written treaty this generous and unusual task are Cuba, the Panama Republic, the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Being all involved in this task and its con sequences, it is my opinion that we should thoroughly inform ourselves about these countries and their people. If you had undertaken to insure the peace and prosperity of several of your neighbors, surely you would want to know the habits and Character of these neighbors, and how numerous were their offspring. Similarly, I believe that North Ameri cans ought to know fully about these outlying countries over which we are exercising guardianship. In the hope of widen ing information relative to them I am publishing this book. All Of these countries are tropical, and largely inhabited by people of Spanish blood, Indians and negroes, or some fusion of the blood of these several strains. This fact adds to the difficulties and dangers of our task. These people, however, are somewhat more advanced than the general population of the Philippine Islands, where we have been successful up to the present by taking hold of the problem with direct control, and where, in my opinion, we should remain. In these essays, contributors highlight the interconnectedness of the two archipelagos in social categories such as nation, race, class, and gender to encourage a more nuanced and multifaceted study of the relationships between the islands and their diasporas. Topics range from historical and anthropological perspectives on Cuba and Puerto Rico before and during the Cold War to cultural and sociological studies of diasporic communities in the United States. The volume features analyses of political coalitions, the formation of interisland sororities, and environmental issues. Along with sharing a similar early history, Cuba and Puerto Rico have closely intertwined cultures, including their linguistic, literary, food, musical, and religious practices. Contributors also discuss literature by Cuban and Puerto Rican authors by examining the aesthetics of literary techniques and discourses, the representation of psychological space on the stage, and the impacts of migration. Showing how the trajectories of both archipelagos have been linked together for centuries and how they have diverged recently, Cuba and Puerto Rico offers a transdisciplinary approach to the study of this intricate relationship and the formation of diasporic communities and continuities.
