Book excerpt: Excerpt from Uruguay's Livestock and Meat Industry Uruguay is a major exporter of wool, meat, and hides and skins. After Argentina, it leads the countries of the Western Hemisphere in exports of beef and veal, even though with Argentina it tends to take either first or second rank among all countries each year in per capita consumption. When this meat enters the list of u.s. Imports, it does so in canned beef form. Uruguay's beef and veal exports have risen faster than production, the former nearly doubling by 1965 over the 5-year average level for 195 6-60, the latter increasing by a little over one-third. Uruguay usually ranks second only to Argentina among Western Hemisphere suppliers of wool in world trade, with the United States and the United Kingdom principal markets. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Crops and Markets, Vol. 59: August 15, 1949 Uruguay, the second largest exporter of meat in South America, increased its l9h8 exports by more than MB million pounds over the preceding year. Although these exports were MO percent below the prewar level, the l9h8 exports do reflect the increase in cattle numbers and meat production over the low\levels following the l9he-m3 drought. Brazil's exports also showed an increase over i9h7, but were nearly 50 million pounds below the l93h 38 average. Incieased domestic demand for meat in that country has been the major factor in holding down exports. Paraguay; likewise, increased its meat exports in i9h8, more than double the prewar level. Meat exports from Chile, on the other hand, have shown a decline for several years due chiefly to_lower livestock numbers and strong'domestic demand. Australian.meat exports dropped from.537 million pounds in 19h? To £56 million pounds in 19h8. This is almost to mil 'lion dollars below the l93h 38 level. Relatively slow recovery from.the long drought, extending over several years, and the holding back of breeding animals, apparently, were the pre dominating factors in last year' s lower exports. New Zealand's meat exports showed a decline in 1948, compared with a year earlier, and'were about 185 million pounds above the prewar level. Some holding out of breeding animals was a factor in 'last year' s smaller exports. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Cuba s Livestock and Meat Industries Classic Reprint

Download or read book Cuba s Livestock and Meat Industries Classic Reprint written by U. S. Foreign Agricultural Relations and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-26 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cuba's Livestock and Meat Industries There is considerable specialization among ranchers. Breeders keep cows and raise calves, which are sold as yearlings weighing 350 to pounds. Growers buy yearlings, and sell 2-year olds' weighing 600' to 700 pounds. Feeders keep the 2-year-olds for 15 to 2h months, depending on range and market conditions, and sell the finished animals at to pounds. Practices in handling cattle vary widely, but typically are rather primitive. Range hulls deteriorate rapidly, as controlled breeding is practiced only to a limited degree. Most calves are dropped in the Spring, but some births occur throughout the year. Often the calves are left until they are 6 to 12 months old before being rounded up for branding (or ear-clipping), vaccination, castra tion of male stock, dehorning, and clipping. Castration at a late age curtails the animals' growth considerably, and causes some death losses. Also, castration is often omitted entirely, or, when performed by pressure instruments, is done only partially. Dehorning is limited to clipping the tips. Under these circumstances, a large percentage of cattle come to market as large-boned lean, muscular, wide-horned animals, and producing lean meat with out marbling and without fat, which Cuban consumers prefer. Some growers, however, have demonstrated that Cuba can produce fat, grass-fed steers whose meat compares favorably with all but the highest grade of grain-finished steers in the United States. Disease is not a serious factor. The island is free of foot-and-mouth disease and rinderpest. Strict quarantine regulations bar the importation of fresh meat from infested countries, which might bring these diseases to Cuba. Cattle gener ally are vaccinated against blackleg and anthrax. Tuberculosis and Bang's disease exist but have not been reported at any time as causing serious losses. Cattle ticks are common throughout Cuba. Although the cattle develop a relative immunity to tick fever, the vitality and quality of herds are sometimes affected detrimentally. The better ranches dip their cattle regularly, and some have developed pastures fairly free of ticks. The prevalence of ticks is a particularly serious problem for breeding stock imported from tick-free areas of the United States. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beef Cattle Industries of Central America and Panama The failure of the livestock industries of Central America and Panama to respond more vigorously to the stimulus of the increased demand for meat and the concomitant higher prices is the result of the interaction of numerous factors. Among these, the most important are probably the present concentration of cattle on lands of low natural fertility in regions subject to a prolonged dry season, the primitive and extensive systems of management which prevail, and the failure of official entities and private credit institutions to provide adequate technical and financial assistance. Though the situation varies from country to country and reliable and precise data are not available, the livestock industries of Central America and Panama are still characterized by a very slow rate of increase in the cattle population as a result of a low calving percentage and a high rate of mortality among both young and adult stock. Available evidence points to an effective average calving percentage (calves weaned) of well under 50 percent and an adult mortality rate of over 10 percent. Download or read book Foreign Crops and Markets Vol 63 written by Office Of Foreign Agricultura Relations and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Crops and Markets, Vol. 63: August 27, 1951 Livestock numbers, especially hogs, have continued to increase in the United Kingdom during 1951, but the number of dairy cattle has declined. According to William Kling, American Embassy, London, feed supplies have not been as great as earlier anticipated, but are still adequate for ex isting livestock. There is some uncertainty as to future supplies of feed, and the United Kingdom s dependence on imports explains its desire to maintain trade and shipments from the Soviet Union. Meat production increased in 1950 compared with however, production of mutton, lamb. And beef in the first half of 1951 was below. Expectations. Pigmeat produc tion increased substantially and there was some diversion from bacon to pork utilization to alleviate the shortage of other types of fresh meat. Plans are being made for improving slaughter facilities. As a result of the termination of Argentine and Uruguayan shipments, as well as lower shipments from Australia and New Zealand, fresh meat consumption in the first half of 1951 was only about half the level in 1950. This decline was offset in part by increased imports, production, and consumption of bacon, ham, and canned meats. Consumption should improve in the last half of 1951 with the resumption of South American shipments and probably high er domestic slaughter. Current meat stocks are probably very low. The Government is attempting to increase domestic meat production because of the general shortage and import difficulties and has announced substantially higher prices for meat animals in 1951-52. As a result of these increases and higher import prices, retail prices have also been increased, adding to rising living costs, Britain may have to pay higher than accustomed prices for imports in the next few years and supplies will be inadequate for derationing' if price controls are continued. Book Livestock in a Changing Landscape Volume 1

Download or read book Livestock in a Changing Landscape Volume 1 written by Henning Steinfeld and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2013-03-06 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapidly changing nature of animal production systems, especially increasing intensification and globalization, is playing out in complex ways around the world. Over the last century, livestock keeping evolved from a means of harnessing marginal resources to produce items for local consumption to a key component of global food chains. Livestock in a Changing Landscape offers a comprehensive examination of these important and far-reaching trends. The books are an outgrowth of a collaborative effort involving international nongovernmental organizations including the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UN FAO), the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), the Swiss College of Agriculture (SHL), the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD), and the Scientific Committee for Problems of the Environment (SCOPE). Volume 1 examines the forces shaping change in livestock production and management; the resulting impacts on landscapes, land use, and social systems; and potential policy and management responses. Volume 2 explores needs and draws experience from region-specific contexts and detailed case studies. The case studies describe how drivers and consequences of change play out in specific geographical areas, and how public and private responses are shaped and implemented. Together, the volumes present new, sustainable approaches to the challenges created by fundamental shifts in livestock management and production, and represent an essential resource for policy makers, industry managers, and academics involved with this issue.
