Most of his poems are Sufi in content. He caught dysentery at the age of thirty-six and died. He also was influenced by Hafiz and Fighani (both from Shiraz) and composed in what became known as the 'Indian Style'. He is known mostly for his qasidas on Prophet Mohammed & others but preferred the ghazal. He was the commander-in-chief of the army of Akbar against Sultan Muzaffar of Gujarat. Rahim was known for his strange manner of giving alms to the poor. He never looked at the person he was giving alms to, keeping his gaze downwards in all humility. He was famous for his poetry and generosity even at the court of Abbas the great, the Persian Shah of the time. His ghazals are said to have surpassed those of Naziri and many are Sufi and Bhakti in nature. He also composed many dohas in Hindi (Braj Bahasa... an early form of Urdu). Popularly known as Rahim and immortalised through his dohas or couplets, Rahim was among the most important ministers in Akbar's court. His tomb sits prominently along the Mathura Road, formerly the Mughal Grand Trunk Road, and is in close proximity to the Dargah of Nizam ud-din Auliya and Humayun's Tomb in South Delhi. It began in 1526, invaded and ruled most of India by the late 17th and early 18th centuries, and ended in the mid-19th century. Babur, the first 'Mughal' emperor (who wrote some poetry influenced by Sufism) learned about the riches of Hindustan and conquest of it by his ancestor, Timurlane, in 1503 at Dikh-Kat, a place in the Transoxiana region. Babur's son Humayun (another who composed Sufi-influenced poetry) succeeded him in 1530. The 'classic period' of the Empire started in 1556 with the accession of Jalaluddin Mohammad Akbar, better known as Akbar the Great. It ended with the death of the last emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar, both Sufis and poets. The prince and ruler of Golconda Qutub Shah (1565-1611) who built the city of Hyderabad was a great Sufi poet as were Prince Dara Shikoh who composed books on Vedanta and Sufism before his fundamentalist younger brother Aurangzeb had him killed. He was greatly loved by his niece Princess Zeb-un-Nissa, the poetess 'Makhfi', and was a profound influence on her becoming a Sufi and a wonderful poet. She spent many years jailed by her father. She shows that these images have been used and refined over the centuries and reflect the changing conditions in the Muslim world. According to Schimmel, Persian poetry does not aim to be spontaneous in spirit or highly personal in form. Instead it is rooted in conventions and rules of prosody, rhymes, and verbal instrumentation. Ideally, every verse should be like a precious stone--perfectly formed and multifaceted--and convey the dynamic relationship between everyday reality and the transcendental. Persian poetry, Schimmel explains, is more similar to medieval European verse than Western poetry as it has been written since the Romantic period. The characteristic verse form is the ghazal--a set of rhyming couplets--which serves as a vehicle for shrouding in conventional tropes the poet's real intentions. Such a work must obviously contain as many novel features as possible, so that a short explanation of what my collaborators and I had in mind when planning the book is perhaps not superfluous. In the first place our object was to present a short summary of the material in all its aspects, and secondly to review the subject from the chronological, geo graphical and substantial standpoints - all within the compass of a single volume. Such a scheme precludes a formal and complete enumeration of names and phenom ena, and renders all the greater the obligation to accord most prominence to matters deemed to be of greatest importance, supplementing these with such figures and forms as will enable an impression to be gained of the period in question - all this is far as possible in the light of the most recent discoveries. A glance at the table of contents will suffice to give an idea of the multifarious approach that has been our aim. We begin at the very first traces of evidence bearing on our subject and continue the narrative up to the present day. Geographically the book embraces Iran and its neighbouring countries, while it should be remarked that Iranian literature in its fullest sense also includes Indo-Persian and Judeo-Persian works.
