Crisis urbana y cambio social se ocupa así de cuatro tipos de experiencia urbana bien distintos: las grandes ciudades norteamericanas, donde la lógica del capital aparece como plenamente dominante; Francia, donde el Estado posee amplia autonomía y capacidad de intervención en la política urbana; Madrid, donde los movimientos sociales urbanos han sido determinantes en la modificación del modelo de desarrollo; y las sociedades latinoamericanas en las que la dependencia condiciona la interrelación entre los tres elementos citados (capital, Estado y movimientos sociales).
