Book Improving Firefighter Safety in the Wildland urban Intermix

Download or read book Improving Firefighter Safety in the Wildland urban Intermix written by Richard J. Mangan and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year, the incursion of private residences into wildlands increases the potential for the devastating loss of important natural resources and private property from wildfire. Structural and wildland firefighters are working side-by-side in a setting that is not typical of their traditional workplaces. These wildland-urban intermix fires have proven to be a special risk to the safety of the firefighters battling them. In the 1990gass alone, firefighters have been seriously injured or killed on intermix fires in Arizona, California, Utah, Kentucky, and other States. This report discusses key areas of concern for firefighter safety in the wildland-urban intermix: command and control, mix of forces, access, civilian population, personal protective clothing and equipment, and special hazards.

Book The Peril of Log Building

Download or read book The Peril of Log Building written by Rob Pickett and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many excellent books and articles have been published about log homes. Some focus on the aesthetics, style and decorating of log homes. Some focus on building methods -- from "build your own" to technical instructions. None examine the specific evaluation of log structures to build a high performance structure. This book is intended to provide industry-specific information that can serve as a solid reference for technical discussion. It can benefit presentations to code administrators or legislators to help folks understand the benefits of log building. It is intended to bolster adoption of ICC400 as the "Log Building Code" worldwide. The Peril of Log Building documents the course of action that has stymied the log home industry. It is a search for the answer that supports and explains the thermal performance of log walls. It provides a discussion of the elements of log home design and construction as established by ICC400 and why those elements are important. It includes worksheets as examples of those methods of evaluation.

Book Evaluation of Fire Flow Methodologies

Download or read book Evaluation of Fire Flow Methodologies written by Matthew E. Benfer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This SpringerBrief offers careful assessments of the appropriateness and effectiveness of currently available methodologies for fire flow. It explains the water supply requirements for firefighting including rate of flow, the residual pressure required at that flow, and the duration that is necessary to control a major fire in a specific structure. First reviewing existing fire flow calculation methodologies in the U.S. and globally, the authors determine the new information necessary to validate the existing fire flow calculation methodologies. After identifying 19 methods from the U.S., UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New England, and Canada, two types of methods are evaluated: those for building planning based on fire and building code requirements, and those for on-scene fire service use. Building planning methods are also examined, including an explanation of the range of building variables that determine fire flow. A survey form for fire departments is provided to help fire departments identify key predictive features based on construction and building parameters. Researchers and professionals in fire engineering will find the recommendations in Evaluation of Fire Flow Methodologies valuable.

Book The Economics of Forest Disturbances

Download or read book The Economics of Forest Disturbances written by Thomas P. Holmes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-04-18 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: by Peter J. Roussopoulos, Director, Southern Research Station The world and its ecosystems are repeatedly punctuated by natural disturbances, and human societies must learn to manage this reality Often severe and unp- dictable, dynamic natural forces disrupt human welfare and alter the structure and composition of natural systems Over the past century, land management ag- cies within the United States have relied on science to improve the sustainable management of natural resources Forest economics research can help advance this scientifc basis by integrating knowledge of forest disturbance processes with their economic causes and consequences As the twenty-frst century unfolds, people increasingly seek the goods and services provided by forest ecosystems, not only for wood supply, clean water, and leisure pursuits, but also to establish residential communities that are removed from the hustle and bustle of urban life As vividly demonstrated during the past few years, Santa Ana winds can blow wildfres down from the mountains of California, incinerating homes as readily as vegetation in the canyons below Hurricanes can fatten large swaths of forest land, while associated foods create havoc for urban and rural residents alike Less dramatic, but more insidious, trees and forest stands are succumbing to exotic insects and diseases, causing economic losses to private property values (including timber) as well as scenic and recreation values As human demands on public and private forests expand, science-based solutions need to be identifed so that social needs can be balanced with the vagaries of forest disturbance processes
