Book Urban Life in Nordic Countries

Download or read book Urban Life in Nordic Countries written by Heiko Droste and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-15 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on empirical studies, this book investigates the particular urban history of the North from the 17th century until today in a comparative, Northern perspective. Urban Life in Nordic Countries is the result of a conference on "Urbanity in the Periphery" held in Stockholm on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Institute of Urban History at Stockholm University, aimed at establishing the field of the urban history of the North and creating a network of urban historians of the North. With a broad range of contributions from Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, and Estonia, the volume seeks to further discourse on the region within national and transnational lenses, and to highlight possibilities for new cooperation among researchers. Urban history is a transdisciplinary subject, engaging not only historians but also ethnologists, sociologists, urban planners, and cultural geographers, and this book targets all scholars whose work requires a historical understanding of the Northern town. European urban historians outside the region will also find this text valuable as one of the few studies to consider the urban history of the continent from a North-centered viewpoint.

Download or read book Nordic Welfare Cities written by Magnus Linnarsson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-25 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Nordic cities from 1850 and their transformation from traditional, oligarchic towns to modern, inclusive welfare cities. In the contemporary world, the role of cities as hotbeds for progressive change has become increasingly topical. Historical studies on how Nordic cities addressed social and environmental questions a hundred years ago and how they eventually created new and inclusive policies for the future is a useful contribution to the current debate. The concept of the welfare city is addressed and elaborated upon to analyse the attempts by urban authorities to solve the problems following industrialization and urbanization. From the late nineteenth century, municipal public services promoted the integration of new groups in the urban community including workers, immigrants, women and children. The contributions in this book analyse various examples of welfare and public services that include infrastructure and transport systems, health care, housing conditions, outdoor life and entertainment. The chapters highlight the arguments and considerations promoting welfare policies, while also addressing differences between the Nordic countries. The evolution of the Nordic welfare city was a process of several overlapping phases or dimensions. This volume will be of value to students and scholars alike interested in urban history, social and cultural history and European history.

Book excerpt: Online publication: https://pub.norden.org/nord2020-036/ Abstract [en] In this paper we focus on three of the main ways civil society can play a role in the integration of refugees and immigrants. The leading question we seek to answer is as follows. Are the ways in which civil society engages different in rural areas and in smaller communities around the Nordic Region, as compared with urban areas and large cities? We use evidence from interviews and transcripts with migration workers as our starting point. We then focus on the role of a) religious communities and aid organisations, b) sport organisations and clubs, c) pop-up activism and mentorship programmes from available literature and from Nordic seminars and dialogue. We will also focus on partnerships and forms of coordination between civil society organisations, municipalities and regions.

Book Background Music Cultures in Finnish Urban Life

Download or read book Background Music Cultures in Finnish Urban Life written by Heikki Uimonen and published by . This book was released on 2024-05-08 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Element focuses on how music is experienced, articulated, and reclaimed in urban commercial environments. Special attention is paid to listeners, spaces, and music, co- and re-produced continuously in their triangular relationship affected by social, legal, economic, and technological factors. The study of the historical development of background music industries, construction of contemporary sonic environments, and individual meaning-making is based on extensive data gathered through interviews, surveys, and fieldwork, and supported by archival research. Due to the Finnish context and the ethnomusicological approach, this study is culture-sensitive, providing a fresh 'factory-to-consumer' perspective on a phenomenon generally understood as industry-lead, behavioral, and global. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Book Urban Patterns of Growth

Download or read book Urban Patterns of Growth written by Nordic Council of Ministers and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2013-02-22 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban Patterns of Growth was carried out for the preparation of the Nordic regional policy co-operation programme 2013-2016 and national regional policies in the Nordic countries. A key issue is the concentration of economic growth in the largest cities. This is favored by urbanisation economies but also by the forming of specialised international networks of innovation and production established far beyond regional and national borders. Much research has focused upon these new global networks, leaving behind the question of the national spreading effects of the production that has not been outsourced. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to elucidate, via case studies, the extent to which the purchases of supplies and services from knowledge firms are located in proximity of the company or whether these purchases have spread to the remaining part of the country.

Book THE NORDIC REGION a sustainable and integrated region

Download or read book THE NORDIC REGION a sustainable and integrated region written by Nordic Council of Ministers Secretariat and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available online: https://pub.norden.org/politiknord2023-728/ Our Vision 2030 describes what it will take to make the Nordic Region the most sustainable and integrated region in the world. The sheer ambition makes it important to monitor progress closely. To this end, the Nordic Council of Ministers commissioned Rambøll Management Consulting to conduct baseline measurements back in 2021. The idea was to map out the starting point for work on the vision. This status report follows up on the baseline measurements and assesses progress towards realising the vision. It is based on the 45 indicators adopted by the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2021 and the methodology used for the baseline report. Overall, the 2023 status report shows that the Nordic Region remains on track to become the most sustainable and integrated region in the world. This is particularly true for the visions of a competitive Nordic Region and a socially sustainable Nordic Region. However, there is room for improvement with regard to the visions for a green Nordic Region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2015, it will be Denmark’s turn to hold the Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers and lead the way in this important form of collaboration, which for many decades has served to nurture and enhance the strong sense of affinity between our nations. The people of the Nordic Region have close ties as a result of their shared history and values, on the basis of which a partnership has evolved that serves as a rich source of mutual inspiration and support. It has also given rise to ways of working together that provide relevant and topical answers to the challenges that we all face. One example of this is the long-standing commitment to promoting crossborder freedom of movement between our countries, which is crucial if Nordic companies and ordinary people are to reap the benefits of our geographical proximity, shared attitudes and sense of cultural affinity. This will continue to be a key component of Nordic co-operation. Nordic co-operation has celebrated many successes over the years, but we mustn’t rest on our laurels. It is crucial that we continue to generate real added value and come up with tangible solutions to new challenges as they arise. This is particularly important as we start to recover from the global economic crisis, which had a major impact on our countries. The crisis forced us to make a series of difficult decisions – not least in order to protect the Nordic welfare systems. The latter may well have proved robust but have not emerged unscathed. In the next few years, it will be of paramount importance that that we put the crisis behind us for good and cement the foundations of a society that will remain dynamic and innovative. We need to keep creating opportunities for those able to take advantage of them, and provide a safety net for those who find it difficult to cope on their own. The Danish Presidency will concentrate on four themes designed to strengthen and focus the Nordic partnership. We will turn the spotlight on growth and employment; we will uphold Nordic welfare; we will enhance knowledge of Nordic values by bolstering the Nordic “brand”; and we will focus on the Arctic. We look forward to a close and rewarding partnership with our Nordicneighbours and friends throughout 2015.

Book Gentrification in Helsinki

Download or read book Gentrification in Helsinki written by Kevin Drain and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-07 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book unravels the paradox of gentrification in Helsinki, Finland. Here, housing and welfare policies work well under certain conditions to prevent the worst outcomes of residential gentrification. Yet other forms of gentrification have proliferated in recent years, and local urban planning has gained a momentum in efforts to remake the urban landscape for business and tourism. Through a range of methods, each chapter approaches a different aspect of gentrification: the effectiveness of welfare policies against residential gentrification, the importance of retail gentrification and symbolic changes, the role of media and state-led tourism campaigns in promoting gentrification, the rise of vibrancy and sustainability as concepts driving regeneration, and the question of planning principles like participation in confronting gentrification. The reader will find a state system that supports a delicate balance in housing, but a local planning regime related to a more “generalized” gentrification. The results raise questions about the limits of the welfare state in an age of global competition. While new readers of gentrification will benefit from a deep engagement with the literature, the case of Helsinki is relevant to all students of planning, social sciences, and urban studies, as well as professionals in related fields.
