Book Land Use Issues of the 1980s

Download or read book Land Use Issues of the 1980s written by James H. Carr and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1983 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land use and development patterns are the result of a complex interaction of demographic trends, economic circumstances, and social attitudes. Technological advancements in areas such as transportation and construction, and the availability and cost of key natural resources, including land, fresh water, and energy, also have a profound impact on urban spatial patterns. Consequently, the determinants of urban spatial form are dramatically different today from the forces that acted to shape American cities in the past.In order for land use controls to be effective, regulations on the use of land must keep abreast of changes in the factors affecting the demand for land. Zoning ordinances, subdivision regulations, and building codes have drawn criticism in recent years from land use planners, developers, environmentalists, and others involved in or concerned with the land use planning process. The myriad problems associated with the rapid growth and expansion of suburbia and, more recently, of exurbia, have been answered with traditional land regulatory mechanisms that have had only mixed success. How have controls been adapted to meet the demands of increasingly complex development patterns? How successful have these modifications been in achieving more efficient spatial configurations and less costly building practices? These issues are the subject of the readings that have been gathered together by James H. Carr and Edward E. Duensing. Beginning with factors affecting land use demand, this volume presents an analysis of current state-of-the-art land use controls, reviews the shortcomings of the current land regulatory system, and suggests certain modifications to improve urban spatial development patterns. The concluding chapters discuss land use issues for future consideration.

Book Land and Housing Policies in Europe and the USA

Download or read book Land and Housing Policies in Europe and the USA written by Graham Hallett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2023-05-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1988, this book concentrates on urban land policy and was particularly significant when it was originally published because the 1980s were an era when the rich were getting richer and the poor poorer and in which changes in the ownership of and access to real estate contributed to this polarisation. The book focusses on some core topics, namely: The buying, selling and holding of land by public agencies; the land market, including the impact of taxation and subsidisation; the control of the land market through town planning controls. There are chapters devoted to urban land policy in the former West Germany, The Netherlands, France, the former Yugoslavia, the UK and USA.

Book Reforming Urban Land Policies and Institutions in Developing Countries

Download or read book Reforming Urban Land Policies and Institutions in Developing Countries written by Catherine Farvacque and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1992 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper attempts to define and assess the various institutional and mechanical elements which constitute a land management system and which have a significant impact on the functioning of land markets. The assumption of this report is that the accumulation over time of different institutions and instruments, which have relfected different priorities and policies, has inhibited the efficient and equitalbe operation of land markets and that reforms of institutions and policies are now urgently needed.
