Book Urban Growth in Emerging Economies

Download or read book Urban Growth in Emerging Economies written by Gordon McGranahan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Along with globalization, urban transitions have been central in the southward shift in economic power towards the newly emerging economies. As this book shows, however, these transitions have not been painless, and it is important for the rest of the urbanizing world to learn from the mistakes. It examines the role of urbanization and urban growth in the emerging economies, taking the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) as case studies. Their different approaches towards urbanization have shaped their historical development paths and assisted or constrained their futures. Several of the BRICS bear heavy burdens from past failures to accommodate urban growth inclusively and efficiently, and many other urbanizing countries in Asia and Africa are in danger of replicating their mistakes. The overriding lesson of the book is that cities and nations must anticipate urbanization, and accommodate urban growth pro-actively, so as not to be left with an enduring legacy of inequalities and lost opportunities. This book is aimed at students and researchers in urban studies and development studies. It will also be of interest to policy advisors concerned with urbanization and the role of cities in a country’s development

Book excerpt: Urban growth and anthropogenic pollution have been one of the biggest problems of the last century (Edenhofer et al, 2012). Starting the 20th century, only 3% of the world population lived in urban areas, however at the end of this period population increased considerably, reaching 47% in urban centers (Green & Sanchez, 2011). The UN (2005) pointed out that in 2005 the number of people living in urban areas reached 49%, and predicted that by 2030 60% of the global population will live in urban areas (UN, 2005). One of the main causes of this phenomenon is internal migration. For example, in Latin America population growth began in 1950, when many people moved from rural to urban areas. These migrations were associated with job search, educational opportunities and internal violence (Rodriguez, 2008). This phenomenon establishes the development process of large cities such as Mexico City and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil with a population of over 10 million people each. The UN estimates that in 2025, other capital cities like Bogota in Colombia will turn into a megacity, which means greater demands to meet basic requirements in health, housing and transport (UN news, 2010). The city of Bogota is one of the most important capital cities in the region. It has a population of 7,770,357 million and over 9 million people in the metropolitan area

Book The Making of Citizens

  • Author : Bryan Roberts
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2020-11-25
  • ISBN : 1000122794
  • Pages : 273 pages

Download or read book The Making of Citizens written by Bryan Roberts and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published as 'Cities of Peasants', this highly-acclaimed account of the expansion of capitalism in the developing world has now been extensively rewritten and updated. Focusing on Latin America, Bryan Roberts traces the evolution of developing societies and their economies to the present. Taking account of the move towards more 'open' economies, a shrinking of the state and various transitions towards democracies, he shows how urban growth has produced new patterns of social stratification, creating opportunities for social mobility, but doing little to decrease income inequality or political and social pressures. Underlying social changes have broadened the practice of citizenship in developing countries, limiting authoritarian rule but within a context of entrenched social inequalities and persisting political instability. This book conveys both the flavour of life in the cities of the third world and the immediacy of their problems.
