Book Improving Municipal Solid Waste Management in India

Download or read book Improving Municipal Solid Waste Management in India written by P U Asnani and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2007-11-30 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid Waste Management (SWM) is a matter of great concern in the urban areas of developing countries. The municipal authorities who are responsible for managing municipal solid waste are unable to discharge their obligations effectively because they lack the in-house capacity to handle the complexities of the process. It is heartening to see that the World Bank has prepared this book covering all important aspects of municipal SWM in great depth. The book covers very lucidly the present scenario of SWM in urban areas, the system deficiencies that exist, and the steps that need to be taken to correct SWM practices in compliance with Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules 2000 ratified by the Government of India. The book shares examples of best practices adopted in various parts of the country and abroad, and very appropriately covers the institutional, financial, social, and legal aspects of solid waste management, which are essential for sustainability of the system. It provides a good insight on how to involve the community, nongovernmental organizations, and the private sector to help improve the efficiency and cost effectiveness of the service, and shows how contracting mechanisms can be used to involve the private sector in SWM services. This book will be a very useful tool for city managers and various stakeholders who deal with municipal solid waste management in the design and execution of appropriate and cost-effective systems.

Book URBAN SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

Download or read book URBAN SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT written by Sudipto Ghosh and published by Palmview Publishing. This book was released on with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waste management considered the most complex issue in urban areas, and it is associated with a variety of complex socioeconomic and environmental issues. Rapid urbanization, change in lifestyles and rise in population has resulted in the generation of huge quantities of solid waste. The waste management system remains primitive and has failed to evolve with the demands of the rapidly changing situation. The quantity of waste generated is much higher than the quantity collected, transported and disposed of, leading to the piling up of uncollected waste in streets, public places and drains. The unsanitary methods adopted for the disposal of municipal solid wastes pose a serious health concern. The technologies that have been attempted in India run into rough terrain, failed to bring desired environmental and public health benefits. This book is comprised of articles highlighting the issues relating to problems in managing urban waste, sustainability in waste management practices and generating wealth from waste contributed by eminent scholars in this field.

Book Inclusive Urbanization

Download or read book Inclusive Urbanization written by Krishna K. Shrestha and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-25 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we include and represent all people in cities? As the world rapidly urbanizes, and climate change creates global winners and losers, understanding how to design cities that provide for all their citizens is of the utmost importance. Inclusive Urbanization attempts to not only provide meaningful, practical guidance to urban designers, managers, and local actors, but also create a definition of inclusion that incorporates strategies bigger than the welfare state, and tactics that bring local actors and the state into meaningful dialogue. Written by a team of experienced academics, designers, and NGO professionals, Inclusive Urbanization shows how urbanization policy and management can be used to make more inclusive, climate resilient cities, through a series of 18 case studies in South Asia. By creating a model of urban life and processes that takes into account social, spatial, cultural, regulatory and economic dimensions, the book finds a way to make both the processes and outcomes of urban design representative of all of the city’s inhabitants.

Book Integrated Sustainable Waste Management in Bhaktapur Nepal

Download or read book Integrated Sustainable Waste Management in Bhaktapur Nepal written by I. Duwal and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid Waste Management (SWM) is a major challenge in urban areas throughout the world but especially in the urban areas of developing world. The increasing population and urbanization have increased problems related with waste generation and disposal in these countries. These problems opt for waste separation as an integrated approach as a key towards successful and sustainable SWM. With the reduction in availability of land for landfill sites, for sustainable waste management, consideration of spatial aspect is required to analyze requirement and availability of space for dumping of solid waste. The objectives of this research are; 1) to provide insights about perception of different stakeholders regarding solid waste separation by assessing influence and interest of different stakeholders and policies related with SWM and b) to analyze the spatial characteristics of the city in order to illustrate importance of spatial aspects in Integrated Sustainable Waste Management (ISWM). This research is focused on activities, plan and policies based on waste separation and spatial characteristics of Bhaktapur in terms of SWM. The analysis of SWM system of the case is carried out based on theoretical framework of three dimensions of ISWM i.e. 1) Stakeholders, 2) System Elements and 3) Aspects. Case study research is used in this study to collect required primary and secondary data. The results from this research revealed that attitude and behavior of the citizens and lack of infrastructures are major two reasons behind problems related with implementation waste separation. The study further justified the importance of integration of spatial aspect in SWM by presenting the relation of waste separation with spatial issues in individual, neighborhood and municipal level.

Book Municipal Solid Waste Management in Asia and the Pacific Islands

This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid waste management issues, technologies and challenges are dynamic. More so, in developing and transitory nations in Asia. This book, written by Asian experts in solid waste management, explores the current situation in Asian countries including Pacific Islands. There are not many technical books of this kind, especially dedicated to this region of the world. The chapters form a comprehensive, coherent investigation in municipal solid waste (MSW) management, including, definitions used, generation, sustainable waste management system, legal framework and impacts on global warming. Several case studies from Asian nations are included to exemplify the real situation experienced. Discussions on MSW policy in these countries and their impacts on waste management and minimization (if any) are indeed an eye-opener. Undoubtedly, this book would be a pioneer in revealing the latest situation in the Asian region, which includes two of the world’s most dynamic nations in the economic growth. It is greatly envisaged to form an excellent source of reference in MSW management in Asia and Pacific Islands. This book will bridge the wide gap in available information between the developed and transitory/developing nations.
