Book Freeway Corridor Management

Download or read book Freeway Corridor Management written by Conrad L. Dudek and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1992 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to state and local traffic engineers, transportation planners, transit operators, law enforcement officials, public information agencies, and others responsible for the transportation elements of freeway corridors. Information is provided on the policies and procedures for freeway corridor management, and descriptions of a number of techniques and practices are presented. Traffic growth and increasing congestion on urban freeways require a comprehensive approach toward managing the complex elements of freeway operations. This report of the Transportation Research Board provides information on freeway corridor management strategies, the components of management, examples of effective applications of the strategies, and benefits of freeway corridor management. The management techniques that are discussed include freeway surveillance and control; corridor street surveillance and control; high-occupancy vehicle facilities and incentives; police enforcement and traffic control; hazardous material and other truck traffic restrictions; alternative route planning; motorist assistance patrols; motorist information techniques; and traffic management for recurrent congestion, for incidents, for special events, and for work zones.

Book Managing Urban Freeway Maintenance

Download or read book Managing Urban Freeway Maintenance written by E. Nels Burns and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1990 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to maintenance engineers, traffic engineers, and others interested in the management aspects of maintaining urban freeways. Information is provided on techniques and procedures used by agencies to improve and speed up maintenance procedures, schedule work, and coordinate freeway lane closures. Maintenance of aging urban freeways is difficult because of the high volumes of traffic on these facilities. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes techniques and procedures that highway agencies are using, such as reducing work time and scheduling work for off-peak periods, to minimize traffic delays while freeway maintenance is performed.

Book Freeway Traffic Management

Download or read book Freeway Traffic Management written by Donald G. Capelle and published by Transportation Research Board National Research. This book was released on 1979 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication results from growing concern about increasing congestion on urban freeways. It provides an overview of proven traffic control techniques for reducing congestion and improving operations that will be of interest to highway administrators, legislators, and other public officials concerned with the management and operation of freeway systems. This synthesis of past and present practices describes operational and safety problems typical to an urban freeway corridor, a range of options for dealing with these problems, and guidelines for implementing and operating freeway control systems. The report is based on previous research, actual experience from operating freeway control systems in various parts of the United States, and numerous interviews with individuals having responsibility for those systems. General guidance is provided for the planning and implementation of freeway control projects at the executive and administrative levels.

Book A study of freeway operational controls

Download or read book A study of freeway operational controls written by Conrad Louis Dudek and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation was concerned with a study of operational controls on urban freeways. An analysis was made of the inbound Gulf Freeway to define the operational problems resulting from vehicular incidents. It was found that significant congestion, delay, and stoppage waves frequently occur on the inbound Gulf Freeway because of the reduction in capacity caused by incidents on the main-lanes. Approximately 80 percent of the incidents reduce the inbound freeway capacity by one-half or more; about 13 incidents per week occur in the study section Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. A design concept of a prototype was formulated to increase freeway efficiency by alerting motorists to stoppage waves on freeway sections such as overpasses having restricted sight distances. The prototype was referred to as a safety warning system. It is anticipated that the improved efficiency will result in fewer accidents; reduced system travel time, driver anxiety, and driver discomfort; and improvement in the level of service. Several design alternatives were evaluated. A control technique utilizing critical energy as a parameter was developed and its application to digital computer control of the prototype was investigated. Evaluations were made of the performance, reliability, stability, and sensitivity of the system using a one-lane criterion for control. ...
