It reviews the country's environmental situation, institutional and legislative provisions, status toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, and key challenges in creating environmentally sustainable, climate-friendly, disaster-resilient, and socially inclusive economic growth. Institutional strengthening and capacity building should also be conducted to improve environmental governance.

Book Environmental Geography of South Asia

Download or read book Environmental Geography of South Asia written by R.B. Singh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-13 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume synthesizes critical environmental challenges of dynamic earth and human environment systems in South Asia emphasizing geographical dimensions. It deals with spaceborne monitoring, climate, ecohydrology, forests and biodiversity, land-use and land-cover change (LUCC), natural hazards, and disasters in order to contribute towards a sustainable future. The contributions range from traditional field techniques to the use of remote sensing and geographic information systems. The book integrates environmental attributes relating the past, present, and future of South Asia broadly based on biophysical and human dimensions in spatio-temporal perspectives. The monitoring of natural hazards and climate issues is considered a vital component in the context of environmental geography, especially in observation and understanding of climate and water-induced disasters. It is important to communicate the advances in geoscience techniques to increase the resilience of the vulnerable society of South Asia and to promote livelihood security. The sustainability of South Asia depends strongly on the earth environment, and thus the development of geo-environmental monitoring is critical for a better understanding of our living environment. The aim of the book is to present dynamic aspects of environmental geography to contribute to future earth initiatives in South Asia.

Book Contemporary Environmental Problems in Nepal

Download or read book Contemporary Environmental Problems in Nepal written by Keshav Bhattarai and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 792 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph examines contemporary environmental challenges facing Nepal, this landlocked country’s representativeness in the wider South Asian context is both distinct and generalizable. In large part, this is because of its extremes of physiographical structure- plains, hill ranges, mountainous massifs - and wide range of altitudinal terrains, which represent and replicate South Asian and East Asian continental conditions differing as markedly as humid tropical lowlands, sub-tropical hill ranges and temperate to sub-arctic mountainous environments. Associated forest regimes, in which deforestation and reforestation patterns have evolved in recent times, and differing densities of settlement and cleared agricultural landscapes in each of these altitudinal zones, add to the environmental diversity of Nepal. Associated fauna and exotic species are in various states of endangerment especially Bengal tigers, one horned rhinos, wild elephants, crocodile, musk deer, and peasants, to name a few- so that their forested and mountainous habitats as ‘Wild Life Reserves’ also deserve our attention, and are featured in this monograph’s remit.

Book Inclusive Urbanization

Download or read book Inclusive Urbanization written by Krishna K. Shrestha and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-25 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we include and represent all people in cities? As the world rapidly urbanizes, and climate change creates global winners and losers, understanding how to design cities that provide for all their citizens is of the utmost importance. Inclusive Urbanization attempts to not only provide meaningful, practical guidance to urban designers, managers, and local actors, but also create a definition of inclusion that incorporates strategies bigger than the welfare state, and tactics that bring local actors and the state into meaningful dialogue. Written by a team of experienced academics, designers, and NGO professionals, Inclusive Urbanization shows how urbanization policy and management can be used to make more inclusive, climate resilient cities, through a series of 18 case studies in South Asia. By creating a model of urban life and processes that takes into account social, spatial, cultural, regulatory and economic dimensions, the book finds a way to make both the processes and outcomes of urban design representative of all of the city’s inhabitants.

Book Rapid Urban Environmental Assessment Methodology and preliminary findings

Download or read book Rapid Urban Environmental Assessment Methodology and preliminary findings written by Josef Leitmann and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1994 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban Management Program Series Paper 14. A recent evaluation of urban research in developing countries noted that scant data are available on the urban environment, as little research has been done on the topic. This first volume in a two-volume set describes the development of a three-step evaluation process whereby data are collected and analyzed to support the involvement of stakeholders, suggests future directions and improvements, and summarizes results from use of the approach in selected cities. The second of a two- volume set (see below) contains tools that practitioners and researchers can apply directly in the field. See also Volume 2 (ISBN 0-8213-2791-7) Stock No. 12791.
