Book excerpt: In 1958, under the direction of Prof. Marvin Rabin, the Boston University College of Fine Arts established a youth orchestra for junior and senior high school students from the Greater Boston area. The Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras (BYSO), formerly known as the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras, has flourished over the past 50 years, expanding beyond the original single orchestra and launching many new artistic initiatives. BYSO members have experienced countless unforgettable moments, including performances at the White House, Carnegie Hall, and renowned concert venues across the world. Today, under the musical leadership of Federico Cortese, the BYSO serves over 400 young musicians from 126 communities throughout New England. The BYSO is one of Boston's most prestigious arts organizations, with a programmatic scope that includes three full symphonic orchestras, a string orchestra, a preparatory wind ensemble, four chamber orchestras, 50 chamber music ensembles, and a nationally recognized string training program for underrepresented youth from inner-city communities. The BYSO has selected images from its extensive archives to exhibit the rich history of this organization.

Book The Detroit Symphony Orchestra

Download or read book The Detroit Symphony Orchestra written by Paul Ganson and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-09 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first history of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra to describe and document its origins in 1887 to the present day, relating its changing fortunes in light of the economic, demographic, and cultural history of the city of Detroit. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra: Grace, Grit, and Glory details the history of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra as seen through the prism of the city it has called home for nearly 130 years. Now one of America’s finest orchestras, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra began in 1887 as a rather small ensemble of around thirty-five players in a city that was just emerging as an industrial powerhouse. Since then, both the city and its orchestra have known great success in musical artistry for the symphony and economic influence for the city. They have each faced crises as well—financial, social, and cultural—that have forced the DSO into closure three times, and the city to the brink of dissolution. Yet somehow, in the face of adversity, the DSO stands strong today, a beacon of perseverence and rebirth in a city of second chances. This is the first history of the DSO to document the orchestra from its earliest incarnation in the late nineteenth century to its current status as one of the top orchestras in the country. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra tells the story of the organization—the musicians, the musical directors, the boards, and the management—as they strove for musical excellence, and the consistent funding and leadership to achieve it in the changing economic and cultural landscape of Detroit. Author Laurie Lanzen Harris, with Paul Ganson, explores the cycles of glory, collapse, and renewal of the orchestra in light of the city’s own dynamic economic, demographic, and cultural changes. Any reader with an interest in Detroit history or the history of American smphony orchestras should have this book on his or her shelf.

Book excerpt: Part of the Sociology of the City series, originally published in 1959, this volume looks at the urban community bringing together rural and urban sociology. Book The Community Orchestra Its Formation and Maintenance

Download or read book The Community Orchestra Its Formation and Maintenance written by Perry Dickie Ickie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Community Orchestra, Its Formation and Maintenance The popularity of the community orchestra has reached a stage where it would seem that every small city and town laying claim to any musical talent whatsoever aspires to have one of these organizations of its own. The writer, for many years actively interested in amateur musical affairs, conducting and playing in various organizations, having been- the recipient of numerous inquiries from parties about to organize community orchestras aims in this article to anticipate similar questions. It is also written in response to and prompted by the remark made to us frequently by out-of-town parties: "We wish that we could have a community orchestra in our town but we have no one to organize or conduct it" Although many of these places have their town band still they realize that an orchestra is an entirely different proposition requiring a treatment of another kind owing to the diverse elements that enter into its composition. For years we have endeavored to find a book that we could suggest which would answer inquiries on the subject of the organization and conducting of the amateur orchestra, but strange as it may seem, we have so far been unable to find such a one dealing with the subject in a manner that would be of any real service to the conductor of the community orchestra. True there are many most excellent books treating on special subjects in the line of orchestral work which, while they are of value to the advanced music student or for reference to the musician, would be of but limited use to the amateur in his step by step advancement in the formation of his orchestra. Therefore it is our aim to give in this article the essential information which the amateur conductor of the community orchestra needs to attain musical excellence which should be his ideal. Book excerpt: In Harmony: The Complementary Musical Tales of the Brockton Symphony Orchestra, Sharon Civic Orchestra, and Sharon Community Chamber Orchestra is a stirring, historical account of these three Massachusetts ensembles. Each chapter documents the orchestras' operations ranging from their founders to the conductors, repertoire, players, soloists, volunteers, fundraisers, behind-the-scenes realities, and special features. While details of each organization are presented in depth, a seasoning of interesting, humorous, and at times tragic human-interest stories make these tales come alive. Musicians, audience members, supporters, and readers with a passion for history will find connections to the events told here. Welcome to the inside world of these venerable ensembles which take their places in the history of orchestras with pride. In Harmony is the most extensive and intriguing exploration into community orchestras in the literature. Musical portraits are enlivened by real-life adventure stories such as survival by WWII refugees, the guarding of Stradivari violins, performing during power failures, and the dodging of puddles caused by leaking concert hall ceilings. Most notable are the contributions made by core players whose passion for orchestral music-making inspires them to share their talent, time, and commitment with the community, often as part of their life's work. Over time, thousands of audience members have enjoyed their concerts, scores of youth musicians have been awarded performance opportunities and scholarships, and players have felt great satisfaction in their calling to perform. Significant details illuminate the history of the Brockton Symphony Orchestra dating back to 1925 and the central roles that women played in the establishment of the Sharon Civic Orchestra and Sharon Community Chamber Orchestra. The orchestras have been led by conductors from both the local and national stage. Famous performers such as Charles Castleman, Midori, and Gil Shaham were guest soloists with the Brockton Symphony during the early days of their careers. The overall cavalcade of esteemed stars included Karl Ulrich Schnabel, Leonard Rose, Samuel Mayes, Boston Symphony Orchestra members and many others! The conductors, soloists, volunteers, and most importantly, the players, have devoted their lives to the making of symphonic music for all to enjoy. Their tales are masterpieces.
