Book excerpt: In a modern, magical New York City, tensions between those with and those without Magickal ability are constant. The Templar Order for National Organization, or TONO, was established years ago as a special task force to keep paranormally gifted citizens in line. Magi -- especially those in bigger cities -- live under the thumb of the government. Special curfews, taxes, laws and rules are enforced with impunity, and for Magi with “illegal” abilities, like Kasey, the price of freedom could be too steep to pay. As a low-wage, part-time worker in the heart of the city, Kasey and his Magi friends tend keep to themselves. One night, the group goes out to enjoy a night at a new bar, when Kasey meets a dashing and mysterious stranger named Logan. He thinks nothing of it until, the morning after, his friend Jesse has gone missing. Just as he and the others start to worry, Logan walks back into his life, revealing that he is in fact a Templar agent who may be involved with Jesse’s disappearance. And when Logan discovers that Kasey has the power to hypnotize people at will, Logan makes Kasey a deal with the devil: Help Logan get to the bottom of his case and bring Jesse home safe, or face serious prison time for illegal Charm Magick. Kasey takes the deal, but it’s not as easy as a handshake. Stuck together for days on end, Kasey and Logan butt heads almost instantly. Both are stubborn, strong willed, and quick with a snarky remark. Yet as danger grows, and certain secrets unfold, their one chance at salvation might be to cling to each other and hang on for dear life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magic, Monsters and Murder! An urban fantasy legal thriller you can sink your teeth into. "If a miracle happens and I somehow manage to kill this vampire psychopath, my prize is the chance to save a girl, and become one of twenty-four Advocates who decide and enforce the laws that govern the millions of monsters that roam the earth eating babies for breakfast. I imagine they're not going to be too happy about having a human as a member of their club. Screw my life. How did I get myself into this?" As a San Francisco Public Defender, Colt Valentine has just about seen and heard it all. That is until he has a meeting with a well-dressed man claiming to be a sixteen-hundred-year-old vampire who tells him that vampires, witches, and shifters are not only living among us, but have their own legal system. Colt, of course, thinks this guy is crazy until he's shown a video of a family being savagely murdered by a monster he never imagined existed ... not even in his darkest nightmares. Nothing is above the law ... not even monsters! "Just another routine day at the office, absolutely nothing out of the ordinary-other than the fact that the judge has a giant scorpion tail, the defense attorney's a vampire, and the defendant's a werespider who would very much like to rip my head off and drink me dry." Colt is a great trial lawyer, trained by the best, but even he begins to doubt himself as he is immersed in this dark world of magic, monsters, and murder. Colt tries to balance his old life with his new life, while struggling to obtain justice under a set of arcane laws that govern a society that views humans as nothing more than their next meal. The worst part of his new job is that, if he loses, he could lose more than just a trial, he could lose his life. Reader's love Colt Valentine!"Great book. Can't wait for the next one. Wonderful book. The narrative is engaging and moved the story ahead at a brisk pace. Look forward to reading the further adventurous of Colt Valentine." - Ginzain ★★★★★ "Please hurry up and write more! I really loved the mix of humor/banter between characters, the lawyer's approach and court drama, the "door" hopping, the plethora of "monsters" and the fact that this could, and should, be the first of a long list of "Advocate" clients, either human or not!" - M. Flinders ★★★★★ "I love this book! I really enjoyed this story. Once I started reading, I could not stop. It is very well written and it is easy to read. Very enjoyable. I hope the author has more books very soon. I would recommend this to anyone!" - Verified Amazon Customer ★★★★★ "Love Colt Valentine! Colt Valentine is the next great urban fantasy anti-hero in the vein of Harry Dresden, Owen Zastava Pitt, Remy Chandler, Alex Verus, and Atticus O'Sullivan. I read a lot of fantasy and this one is definitely worth reading." - C. Sant ★★★★★ "One of my top 10 favorite books! This was my first urban fantasy book in which the lawyer is the hero. And what a lawyer! Colt is one witty smartass. He has a remark to everything, a really snarky but funny one so I caught myself laughing out loud when he said something like that. There are other characters in the book as well like a goofy-but-in-a-funny-way investigator Wilson, a computer geek called Joycee and a, who knows how years old, vampire called Sinn. I love even her name because it suits her so much. I hope to get to know her more in future books." - A. Szabó ★★★★★

Book excerpt: “He’s had centuries to master this game and he is very, very good at it…” One minute I’m a regular Londoner – overworked, underpaid and living in a flat the size of a shoe box. The next minute I'm doing magic and hunting vampires. You see, it turns out that I'm an arcane witch. Never heard of them? Neither had I until I got attacked by a vampire while trying to make a food delivery. Ok, that wasn't all bad. It did get me through the doors of the sexiest doctor this side of the Thames. The trouble is he’s hiding something. I know it’s something BIG but I just can't work out what it is... Now the other arcane witches want me to join their crusade. They say if we don't hunt vampires to extinction, the blood-suckers will take over the world, turning humans into cattle. I tell those crazy witches to get lost, but that’s a mistake. The vampires know about me. They know that I'm special and they won't stop until I'm dead. I soon find myself locked in a battle of wits against the most devious vampire in existence. I’m in way over my head, but the biggest fight may be the one for my own soul… For fans of Annette Marie, Linsey Hall and BR Kingsolver. If you love sassy heroines, villains you love to hate and unputdownable chapters, you'll love this fast-paced urban fantasy book. Content: Contains language, violence and mild steam. "Jali Henry delivers an urban fantasy led with a strong voice and an empowered heroine in a story that tackles vampires, rape culture, and consent. Henry speaks volumes about rape culture, using vampires as a way to successfully tell this story. Henry delves into the grittiness of the setting through a fresh approach to vampires that puts a spin on the classic bloodthirsty beings. Bree's journey is personal and rooted in her self-discovery and her origins as she's thrown into this chaotic world being the hero that the witches need. The story is action-packed, surprising, and is just the beginning of Bree's journey. Cursed Charm kicks off an exciting new series about empowerment and self-discovery." Readers' Favorite (5 Stars)

It’s the kind of score Karyn Ames has always dreamed of—enough to set her crew up pretty well and, more important, enough to keep her safely stocked on a very rare, very expensive black market drug. Without it, Karyn hallucinates slices of the future until they totally overwhelm her, leaving her unable to distinguish the present from the mess of certainties and possibilities yet to come. The client behind the heist is Enoch Sobell, a notorious crime lord with a reputation for being ruthless and exacting—and a purported practitioner of dark magic. Sobell is almost certainly condemned to Hell for a magically extended lifetime full of shady dealings. Once you’re in business with him, there’s no backing out. Karyn and her associates are used to the supernatural and the occult, but their target is more than just the usual family heirloom or cursed necklace. It’s a piece of something larger. Something sinister. Karyn’s crew and even Sobell himself are about to find out just how powerful it is… and how powerful it may yet become.

Book Pathways to Urban Sustainability

Download or read book Pathways to Urban Sustainability written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2014-03-25 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pathways to Urban Sustainability: Perspective from Portland and the Pacific Northwest is the summary of a workshop convened by the National Research Council's Science and Technology for Sustainability Program in May 2013 to examine issues relating to sustainability and human-environment interactions in the Portland metropolitan region. Topics addressed included the role of land-use restrictions on development, transportation innovations, and economic and social challenges. The speakers at the workshop used examples from Portland and the greater Pacific Northwest region to explore critical questions in finding pathways to urban sustainability. This was the third and final of a series of three place-based urban sustainability workshops - the other two workshops focused on Atlanta, Georgia and Houston, Texas. These public workshops gathered local, state, and federal officials, academics, and key stakeholders to examine how challenges due to continued growth in the regions can be addressed within the context of sustainability. For more than 40 years, the Portland Metropolitan Region has been a national leader in urban policies and investments intended to revitalize the central city and adjacent neighborhoods, preserve the environment, improve equity, and make the city more economically competitive and livable. Portland has been both emulated as path breaking and discounted as overly idiosyncratic. Among the elements contributing to Portland's success have been strong public-private partnerships, a culture of planning, and a willingness to implement diverse ideas generated by federal, state, and local agencies, academics, and the private sector. Regionally, Portland benefits from its location in the middle of the progressive Cascadia Corridor, stretching from Vancouver, British Columbia, to San Francisco, California. This report uses examples from Portland and the Northwest U.S./S.W. Canada region to explore critical questions about the future of urban sustainability. The report provides background about Portland and Cascadia, emphasizing policy innovations and lessons that are potentially transferable elsewhere; focuses on ways to leverage local success through partnerships with state and federal agencies, companies, and nongovernment organizations; examines academic and corporate scientific and engineering research that could help cities to become more sustainable; and addresses the challenging question of how resource-constrained cities can become agents for achieving broader societal goals not directly linked to their operational mandates, such as climate change mitigation, energy independence, and improvement in human health, particularly in low-income communities.

Book Imminent Commons The Expanded City

Download or read book Imminent Commons The Expanded City written by Alejandro Zaera-Polo and published by Actar D, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-02-04 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In light of the increasing disengagement between urban and rural areas, this book address the interdependency of cities with ecological and technological processes outside the purview of traditional urban planning. It compiles a huge amount of essays in regards to the most important topics that cities must address today, such as their connection with global data networks, ecological cycles of resources which supersede the traditional boundaries of urbanism. For this reason, it frames investigation of contemporary urbanism on nine imminent commons grouping the urban commons into resources and technologies lead us to the arcane classification of natural resources: air, water, fire, and earth, the four elements of ancient cosmologies; and five basic technological commons based on expanded human capacities: sensing, communicating, moving, making, and recycling.

Book Urban Castles

  • Author : Jared N. Day
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 1999
  • ISBN : 9780231114035
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Urban Castles written by Jared N. Day and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first comprehensive investigation of the role of landlords in shaping the urban landscapes of today, Jared Day explores the unique case of New York City from the close of the nineteenth century through the World War II era. During this period, tenement landlords were responsible for designing and shaping America's urban landscapes, building housing for the city's ever-growing industrial workforce. Fueled by the illusion of easy money, entrepreneurs managed their buildings in ways that punished compassion and rewarded neglect--and created some of the most haunting images of urban squalor in American history. Urban Castles mines a previously uninvestigated body of tenant and landlord newspapers, journals, and real estate records to understand how tenement landlords operated in an era before tenant rights developed into a central issue for urban reformers. Day contends that--perhaps more than any other group of property owners--urban landlords stood upon the very fault lines of class, ethnicity, and race. In contrast to many urban histories set in executive boardrooms and state houses, and which chronicle struggles between large corporations, government officials, and organized labor, this fascinating work deals with the more chaotic world of small-scale entrepreneurs and their frequently antagonistic relationships with their customers--working-class tenants. Urban Castles is a richly informative chronicle of the dark underbelly of America's emerging welfare state. The neglected side of this important story covered by Day's research says much about the sea changes in landlord-tenant relations and urban policy today.
