Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Uranometria Nova Oxoniensis: A Photometric Determination of the Magnitudes of All Stars Visible to the Naked Eye From the Pole to Ten Degrees South of the Equator Penetrated with the importance of some record whereby obvious variations in the brightness of stars could be ascertained important, not solely on the side of inevitable curiosity, but from the consideration that our own star, the Sun, might itself be variable in light and heat, William Herschel (cir. 1796) set himself to the task of forming that record, after his own manner and from his own resources. With this view, he did not propose to verify or improve Ptolemy's magnitudes, and still less those of F lamsteed, but he adopted a more practical expedient, leading, as he rightly thought, both to greater exactness and to greater utility in the direction of the variability intimated above. Accordingly, he divided a constellation into small groups Of two, or three, or four stars of nearly equal brightness, and he then arranged the stars in these small groups in the order of their lustre, One star might in this way be found in more groups than one, and thus might furnish the means also of connecting several groups together. Beyond this, he attempted with much success to designate the degrees of the various differences in lustre, not by numerical sub-divisions of magnitude as had heretofore been the expedient, but by the introduction of symbols such as dots, commas, semicolons, &c., placed between the stars whose brightness was compared. For instance, in his nomenclature, a dot placed between two stars would indicate all but absolute equality in brightness, the second star however being, if anything, somewhat less bright than the star which preceded the dot. A comma between them would indicate a somewhat greater difference of brightness, and so on. It is due to the reputation of this great practical astronomer to state that, on a photometric examination of the small differences Of light indicated by some of these symbols, there is a precision and a consistency generally observable, which excite admiration. Book excerpt: Every night, a pageant of Greek mythology circles overhead. Perseus flies to the rescue of Andromeda, Orion faces the charge of the snorting Bull, and the ship of the Argonauts sails in search of the Golden Fleece. Constellations are the invention of the human imagination, not of nature. They are an expression of the human desire to impress its own order upon the apparent chaos of the night sky. Modern science tells us that these twinkling points of light are glowing balls of gas, but the ancient Greeks, to whom we owe many of our constellations, knew nothing of this. Ian Ridpath, well-known astronomy writer and broadcaster, has been intrigued by the myths of the stars for many years. Star Tales is the first modern guide to combine all the fascinating myths in one book, illustrated with the beautiful and evocative engravings from two of the leading star atlases: Johann Bode's Uranographia of 1801 and John Flamsteed's Atlas Ceolestis of 1729. This is an excellent reference and the perfect gift for the armchair astronomer and those interested in classical mythology alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Stars Physical offers the first extensive look at the astronomical career of John Herschel, son of William Herschel and one of the leading scientific figures in Britain throughout much of the nineteenth century. Herschel’s astronomical career is usually relegated to a continuation of his father, William’s, sweeps for nebulae. However, as Stephen Case argues, John Herschel was pivotal in establishing the sidereal revolution his father had begun: a shift of attention from the planetary system to the study of nebulous regions in the heavens and speculations on the nature of the Milky Way and the sun’s position within it. Through John Herschel’s astronomical career—in particular his work on constellation reform, double stars, and variable stars—the study of stellar objects became part of mainstream astronomy. He leveraged his mathematical expertise and his position within the scientific community to make sidereal astronomy accessible even to casual observers, allowing amateurs to make useful observations that could contribute to theories on the nature of stars. With this book, Case shows how Herschel’s work made the stars physical and laid the foundations for modern astrophysics.
