Book excerpt: I imagine a future where I have stopped running and even have the courage to look back. Through vivid imagery and stunning metaphor, Consequences of Flight arrives at the heart of mourning and identity. This coming-of-age poetry collection by Pei Ja Anderson explores what it means to be a young, Asian-American woman in a world that can bring unimaginable heartache. After the sudden death of her brother Max, Anderson turned to poetry to help her express the conflicting feelings that accompanied her grief. In Anderson's words, "Learning to love poetry was learning to accept my brother's death." Anderson's sincerity and innovative style take center stage in this collection as she speaks candidly about the nature of mourning, international adoption, and ethnicity. Consequences of Flight speaks to young women and victims of loss who are searching for meaning amidst chaos. After reading the poems in this collection, you'll feel connected to something much larger than yourself, much larger than all of us-the inexorable cycle of life, love, and death.

Book excerpt: A yearning dominates the vibrant poems in Tasting Flight, specifically the desire to be enough. Of course, though, one is always enough. The observant, insightful, and confident speaker in these poems knows this truth intellectually but searches to internalize such knowledge as in this breathtaking poem, "Bird Call Koan with Glossary":Across the hall I lay in the dark contemplating this, the infinitely expanding universe of what I don't know. Stars exploding and being born. Moons in our own solar system still uncounted. And yet some things I think I know with certainty: I'm not pretty. I don't deserve to be loved. If I trill my mating call, who will answer me? I forget the moon is always whole. These lines are representative of the well-crafted poetry readers will find in this book, each poem creating scenes with such vivid details, readers feel as if they are with the speaker, perhaps as an adult gazing at the stars or as a child hiding behind the Life cereal box. All of the poems are deeply rooted in the lyrical tradition, following the switchbacks and curves of a mind always in motion, perhaps contemplating the beauty of moths at night or the intricacies of raising a child. Whatever the subject, Tasting Flight is a book that sings back to the exploding stars.-Charlotte Pence, author of Codeand judge for the 2022 Arthur Smith Poetry Prize

Book Tropes Parables and Performatives

Download or read book Tropes Parables and Performatives written by J. Hillis Miller and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1991-12-06 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropes, Parables, Performatives collects J. Hillis Miller’s essays on seven major twentieth-century authors: Lawrence, Kafka, Stevens, Williams, Woolf, Hardy, and Conrad. For all their evident differences, these essays from early to late explore a single intuition about literature, which may be framed by three words: “trope,” “parable,” and “performative.” Throughout these essays Miller is fascinated with the tropological dimension of literary language, with the way figures of speech turn aside the telling of a story or the presentation of a literary theme. The exploration of this turning leads to the recognition that all works of literature are parabolic, “thrown beside” their real meaning. They tell one story but call forth something else. Miller further agrees that all parables are fundamentally performative. They do not merely name something or give knowledge, but rather use words to make something happen, to get the reader from here to there. Each essay here attempts to formulate what, in a given case, the reader perfomatively enters by way of parabolic trope.

  • Pages : 446 pages

Book excerpt: Poetry. Visual Poetry. A selection from over 40 years of Bennett's work, introduced by Ivan Argüelles: "Where to begin writing about this baffling and certainly most 'avant- garde' of all poets living and working in the USA today? Bennett's reputation is international, and his interest in Mesoamerican culture has drawn him frequently to that part of the world where he is a recognized figure. His experimentations over the years have encompassed multiple techniques, including visual poetry, and his own 'polyglottery,' moving in and out of English, Spanish, Portuguese, French or some Mesoamerican language. What may seem aleatory is in fact more intentional and grounded than is first apparent. Bennett has roots in traditional literatures, those of Siglo de Oro Spain and of Elizabethan England, but he is capable of transducing those literatures, metamorphosing them by way of the avant-garde movements of the 20th century, into something utterly innovative and New, such as few contemporary artists have done."
