Book excerpt: Formed in 1851 from portions of Randolph, Lewis, and Barbour Counties, Upshur County, West Virginia lies in the north central part of the state on the Allegheny Plateau. Rolling foothills and waterways such as the Buckhannon River paint a picturesque landscape, while warm-hearted residents provide testimony to the benefits of living in such amicable surroundings. Upshur County revisits this area during its earlier days, when time seemed to move much slower and wagon squeaks and horses neighs were common sounds in the towns and along the roads. It also brings the reader into present-day Upshur County, highlighting the industrialization that has taken place in more recent times. This volume celebrates Upshurs long and rich heritage by lingering on the stories and images of historical sites, which include the offspring of the sycamore tree in whose hollowed trunk Samuel and John Pringle lived for three years in the 1700s and the old courthouse that was damaged by fire three times in its first six months of existence. Readers will no doubt recognize many of the traditions captured in these pages, including scenes of street parades and the famous Strawberry Festival.

Download or read book The History of Upshur County West Virginia written by William Bernard Cutright and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 780 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a body, these records are extracted from roughly 750 known Bibles and extend from the late 18th through the early 20th centuries, with the greatest concentration from the mid-19th century. Most of the entries refer to births, marriages, and deaths and in most cases indicate the name(s) of the principals, the date of the event, and, sometimes, such supplementary information as his/her age or address, the maiden name of a parent, etc. Each Bible record is identified by family name and followed by a reference to the Huguenot Society records where the original can be found. In all, the records refer to more than 2,500 main families named in the surname index at the back of the volume and embrace a staggering 25,000 individuals of Huguenot or possible Huguenot ancestry--connections and allied families that would otherwise be lost to us in the unpublished files of this august organization.

Book excerpt: This work was originally prepared by the Work Projects Administration (formerly the Works Progress Administration), and entitled "Calendar of Wills in West Virginia: No. 49, Upshur County (Buckhannon)." With this printing, the publication is reissued with the title "Upshur County, West Virginia: Abstracts of Wills, 1851-1884," which better reflects the content of the book. Upshur County's will records are complete from 1851, the date of establishment of the county. In compiling this work, the abstractors limited the publication to wills recorded prior to 1885. Thus only Will Book A has been used. The wills contained herein are entered chronologically by date of probate and are arranged as follows: name of testator, occupation of testator if shown, place will made, date will made, date of probate, names of devisees, name of executor, abstract of will, names of witnesses to will, book and page number of recording, and assigned calendar number. There are approximately 1,400 individuals listed in the index. Paperback, (1941), 2012, Index, 104 pp.

Book Union and Confederate Soldiers and Sympathizers of Barbour County West Virginia

Download or read book Union and Confederate Soldiers and Sympathizers of Barbour County West Virginia written by John W. Shaffer and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 2005 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the passage of the Confederate Ordinance of Secession in April 1861, pro-Union Virginians met in Wheeling and began the process that would lead to the formation of West Virginia as a separate state. Despite the new state's allegiance to the North, the population of West Virginia remained divided in its loyalties, as author John W. Shaffer has described in his other book, "Barbour County, A Clash of Loyalties: A Border County in the Civil War." In his latest effort, "Union and Confederate Soldiers and Sympathizers," Mr. Shaffer enumerates over 1,000 individuals who comprised the fractious community of Barbour County. Using official military records, the 1860 U.S. federal census, and a variety of other primary and secondary sources, the author lists 718 Union and 528 Confederate soldiers and sympathizers from Barbour County. These individuals are arranged by army and thereunder alphabetically. For each we learn the military unit (except for sympathizers), dates of service, duties, date of birth, names of parents, postwar occupation and other activities, and date of death. Mr. Shaffer's Introduction describes the background of the Civil War in Barbour County, while the Appendices specify the Union and Confederate units and military engagements in which Barbour citizens fought.
