Book Handbook of Research on Teaching in Multicultural and Multilingual Contexts

Download or read book Handbook of Research on Teaching in Multicultural and Multilingual Contexts written by Charamba, Erasmos and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2022-06-24 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several factors have resulted in increased intra- and inter-state migration. This has led to an increase in the enrollment of students with diverse linguistics backgrounds, placing more academic demands on educators. Linguistic diversity presents both opportunities and challenges for educators across the educational spectrum. Language ideologies profoundly shape and constrain the use of language as a resource for learning in multilingual or linguistically diverse classrooms. While English has become the world language, most communities remain, and are becoming more and more multicultural, multilingual, and diverse. The Handbook of Research on Teaching in Multicultural and Multilingual Contexts moves beyond the constraints of current language ideologies and enables the use of a wide range of resources from local semiotic repertoires. It examines the phenomenon of language use, language teaching, multiculturalism, and multilingualism in different learning areas, giving practitioners a voice to spotlight their efforts in order to keep their teaching afloat in culturally and linguistically diverse situations. Covering topics such as Indigenous languages, multilingual deaf communities, and intercultural competence, this major reference work is an essential resource for educators of both K-12 and higher education, pre-service teachers, educational psychologists, linguists, education administrators and policymakers, government officials, researchers, and academicians.

Book Dimensions of the Word

    Book Details:
  • Author : Grzegorz Drożdż
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2014-06-12
  • ISBN : 1443861642
  • Pages : 260 pages

Download or read book Dimensions of the Word written by Grzegorz Drożdż and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-12 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume inscribes itself in the long-standing debate on the status of the “word”. Considering its multi-faceted nature, the authors formulate multiple questions about it and, though no answer to these questions might be exhaustive, each of them brings the reader closer to a more complete understanding of the issue. The eleven authors included here address the nature of the word from a number of perspectives, such as the duality of the word, the status of the word as a meaningful unit, the meaning extension, the lexico-grammar continuum, and the pragmatic functioning of the word, to name but a few. Each of the chapters is a fresh contribution that broadens the perspective traditionally adopted in a discussion of the word and, at the same time, constitutes a sound overview of the issues and approaches taken in such an analysis at the turn of the second to the third millennium. The volume is a prime example of the efficiency of research within which multiple linguistic perspectives focus on a single problem – all the perspectives contribute to a more thorough comprehension of the problem than any single of them is ever able to afford.

Book Intercultural Communicative Competence and Individual Differences

Download or read book Intercultural Communicative Competence and Individual Differences written by Judit Dombi and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-02-19 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a concise critical overview of the literature on intercultural communicative competence (ICC) and offers insights into research on this concept. As a novel contribution to the field, the book frames ICC in relation to other learner variables, such as motivation, willingness to communicate, communication apprehension, and self-perceived communication competence. Based on empirical data, the study proposes and tests a model of English majors’ ICC interacting with individual differences related to L2 communication. The findings highlight that students’ beliefs about their own performance, their apprehension from communication situations and their language learning motivation were successfully integrated into a new model of intercultural communicative competence as understood in an interactional EFL context.

Book English Language Learners Socially Constructed Motives and Interactional Moves

Download or read book English Language Learners Socially Constructed Motives and Interactional Moves written by Thomas A. Williams and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the potential for task-based language learning and teaching (TBLT) within a particular context, specifically Hungary, by investigating beliefs among Hungarian university students about English (and other foreign) language teaching. It also examines the nature of these learners’ task-based spoken interaction and explores their socioculturally determined choices in that regard. It finds that, despite much exposure to traditional classroom practices, the learners are generally open to TBLT, make various (sometimes surprising) contributions in performing speaking tasks, and display a tendency toward collaboration in spoken interaction over communication breakdowns. The book offers both universal and culture-specific explanations for this tendency. The findings detailed here have implications for English (and other foreign/second) language teaching which may be of interest to researchers, practitioners, and teacher educators, not only in Hungary, Central Europe, and similar educational contexts, but anywhere that teachers and learners are struggling to improve foreign and second language development.
