Book Landscapes and Landforms of Western Canada

Download or read book Landscapes and Landforms of Western Canada written by Olav Slaymaker and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the only book to focus on the geomorphological landscapes of Canada West. It outlines the little-appreciated diversity of Canada’s landscapes, and the nature of the geomorphological landscape, which deserves wider publicity. Three of the most important geomorphological facts related to Canada are that 90% of its total area emerged from ice-sheet cover relatively recently, from a geological perspective; permafrost underlies 50% of its landmass and the country enjoys the benefits of having three oceans as its borders: the Arctic, Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Canada West is a land of extreme contrasts — from the rugged Cordillera to the wide open spaces of the Prairies; from the humid west-coast forests to the semi-desert in the interior of British Columbia and from the vast Mackenzie river system of the to small, steep, cascading streams on Vancouver Island. The thickest Canadian permafrost is found in the Yukon and extensive areas of the Cordillera are underlain by sporadic permafrost side-by-side with the never-glaciated plateaus of the Yukon. One of the curiosities of Canada West is the presence of volcanic landforms, extruded through the ice cover of the late Pleistocene and Holocene epochs, which have also left a strong imprint on the landscape. The Mackenzie and Fraser deltas provide the contrast of large river deltas, debouching respectively into the Arctic and Pacific oceans.

Book Geology of the Northeastern Niddery Lake Map Area East central Yukon and Adjacent Northwest Territories

Download or read book Geology of the Northeastern Niddery Lake Map Area East central Yukon and Adjacent Northwest Territories written by M. P. Cecile and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The area described in this report is located in the area of the Selwyn Valley, between the Selwyn and Mackenzie mountains on the Yukon-Northwest Territories border. The main section details the stratigraphy of the area and describes 27 mappable units, from the Upper Proterozoic to Carboniferous & recent volcanics, in four different facies zones, including ten new formations. This is followed by description of the area's three main structural domains, plus brief descriptions of intrusive rocks and regional metamorphism. The final section describes mineral occurrences and assesses the potential for economic deposits. The appendix contains paleontological identifications of specimens collected.

Book Sedimentary Cover of the Craton in Canada

Download or read book Sedimentary Cover of the Craton in Canada written by D.F. Stott and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 1993 with total page 713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early chapters of the volume present data and interpretations of the geophysics of the craton and summarise, with sequential maps, the tectonic evolution of the craton. The main body of the text and accompanying plates and figures present the stratigraphy, structural history, and economic geology of specific sedimentary basins and regions. The volume concludes with a summary chapter in which the currently popular theories of cratonal tectonics are discussed and the unresolved questions are identified.

Book Dynamical Geology of Salt and Related Structures

Download or read book Dynamical Geology of Salt and Related Structures written by I. Lerche and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 847 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamical Geology of Salt and Related Structures deals with many aspects of the dynamical evolution of salt bodies in sedimentary basins. This book consists of four major sections. Section A deals with salt dynamics and the motion of salt. The impact of a mobile salt mass on the structural development of the overlying formations is considered in Section B, while the development of caprock, which is commonly found overlying salt diapirs, is emphasized in Section C. The last section deliberates the interrelationships between fluid flow, salt dissolution, and heat flow in the vicinity of a salt diapir, including the connections with maturation of source rocks, migration, and trapping of hydrocarbons in salt-related structures. This publication is valuable to professional geoscientists interested in processes involved in salt dynamics.

Book The Prairie Creek Embayment and Lower Paleozoic Strata of the Southern Mackenzie Mountains

Download or read book The Prairie Creek Embayment and Lower Paleozoic Strata of the Southern Mackenzie Mountains written by D. W. Morrow and published by Ottawa, Canada : Geological Survey of Canada. This book was released on 1987 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Report dealing primarily with a rock sequence of Middle Silurian to Middle Devonian age in the northeastern part of the Virginia Falls map area and the basinal shales of the Road River formation farther south and west. Field work was done during the summers of 1975, 1976 and 1981. A total of 4 months, with helicopter support were spent in the field, and most of the fieldwork was concentrated in the area around Prairie Creek. Forty-two stratigraphic sections of the Ordovician-Devonian sequence were measured. Lithostratigraphic units were defined within these sections and their distribution was mapped from numerous ground tranverses. Data from 3 surface sections and traverses were supplemented with information from 6 surface sections from Banff Oil Ltd. and 2 subsurface well sections.
