Book Risks and Opportunities

Download or read book Risks and Opportunities written by Valerie Brown and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-21 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1995. Managing today’s rapidly changing environment inevitably involves managing conflicts between the demands of development and conservation; the needs of the present and of the future; and between different community interests, professional positions and political priorities. Risks and Opportunities provides both a guide to managing environmental change, and a training manual to pave the way to successful conflict resolution. It explores the full range of potential conflicts and looks at various methods for their resolution. It covers the who, what, why and when of managing change, and emphasizes the need to develop an active and strategic approach which indemnifies the interests and abilities of all the stakeholders. The book’s detailed case studies provide in-depth material on the conflicting uses of urban, agricultural and natural environments, and the self-teaching guide and exercises will enable individual readers and organizations to acquire the necessary practical and team-building skills.

Book Catchment and River Basin Management

Download or read book Catchment and River Basin Management written by Laurence Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-17 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central focus of this volume is a critical comparative analysis of the key drivers for water resource management and the provision of clean water – governance systems and institutional and legal arrangements. The authors present a systematic analysis of case study river systems drawn from Australia, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, UK and USA to provide an integrated global assessment of the scale and key features of catchment management. A key premise explored is that despite the diversity of jurisdictions and catchments there are commonalities to a successful approach. The authors show that environmental and public health water quality criteria must be integrated with the economic and social goals of those affected, necessitating a 'twin-track' and holistic (cross-sector and discipline) approach of stakeholder engagement and sound scientific research. A final synthesis presents a set of principles for adaptive catchment management. These principles demonstrate how to integrate the best scientific and technical knowledge with policy, governance and legal provisions. It is shown how decision-making and implementation at the appropriate geographic and governmental scales can resolve conflicts and share best sustainable practices.

Book Heritage Indigenous Doing and Wellbeing

Download or read book Heritage Indigenous Doing and Wellbeing written by Norm Sheehan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-15 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heritage, Indigenous Doing and Wellbeing presents an Australian Aboriginal relational understanding of the world that offers a counter-narrative to the Western notion of heritage towards new insights into the potential for sustaining the complex systems that support all life. From an Indigenous Australian perspective, the Western concept of heritage is intentionally exclusionary and supports social, political, economic and environmental injustice. Aboriginal people engage with Australia’s lands, waters, and skies every day in entirely different ways, seeing their Country as a living ‘heritage’, but in a unique relationship that engages the individual with Place, Ancestors, Language, and wellbeing analogous to a familial relationship. However, Country is most often relegated by heritage proponents to ‘intangible heritage’ resulting in the concept having little legislative, legal or administrative weight. Drawing on a common understanding of Country as sacred, living and sentient, rather than as objectified property or resource, the contributors to this book explore a diversity of relationships with Country that demonstrate the richness and the practical utility of this relational understanding. Heritage, Indigenous Doing and Wellbeing foregrounds the voices of Australian Aboriginal Peoples who are involved in ‘Caring for Country’. The book offers an essential resource for those engaged in the study of Country, heritage, museums, Indigenous Peoples, First Nations Peoples, landscape architecture, environmental studies, planning, anthropology and archaeology. It will also be of great interest to heritage practitioners working around the globe.
