Book Sound Blind

Download or read book Sound Blind written by Alex Benson and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2023-11-14 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1880s, a new medical term flashed briefly into public awareness in the United States. Children who had trouble distinguishing between similar speech sounds were said to suffer from "sound-blindness." The term is now best remembered through anthropologist Franz Boas, whose work deeply influenced the way we talk about cultural difference. In this fascinating work of literary and cultural history, Alex Benson takes the concept as an opening onto other stories of listening, writing, and power—stories that expand our sense of how a syllable, a word, a gesture, or a song can be put into print, and why it matters. Benson interweaves ethnographies, memoirs, local-color stories, modernist novels, silent film scripts, and more. Taken together, these seemingly disparate texts—by writers including John M. Oskison, Helen Keller, W. E. B. Du Bois, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Elsie Clews Parsons—show that the act of transcription, never neutral, is conditioned by the histories of race, land, and ability. By carefully tracing these conditions, Benson argues, we can tease out much that has been left off the record in narratives of American nationhood and American literature.

Book Making Things International 1

Download or read book Making Things International 1 written by Mark B. Salter and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on recent debates in critical social theory and international relations, Making Things International I: Circuits and Motion presents twenty-five essays that engage the global, the local, and the international through the lens of objects. It represents the first substantial new materialist intervention in global politics and international relations, offering a diverse and provocative set of reflections on how different objects create, sustain, complicate, and trouble the international. Problematizing the stuff of global life, Making Things International focuses on contemporary materialist scholarship on the international realm. The first of two volumes, these original contributions by both new and established scholars examine how war, diplomacy, trade, communication, and mobile populations are made by things: weapons, vehicles, shipping containers, commodities, passports, and more. The authors demonstrate how mundane, everyday objects—not normally understood as international—are in fact deeply implicated in how we think of the world: blood, garbage, viruses, traffic lights, clocks, memes, and ships’ ballast. Book Pejorative Suffixes and Combining Forms in English

Download or read book Pejorative Suffixes and Combining Forms in English written by José A. Sánchez Fajardo and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a research monograph that reviews and revises the concept of linguistic pejoration, and explores the role of 15 suffixes and combining forms, such as -ie, -o, -ard, -holic, -rrhea, -itis, -porn, -ish, in the formation of English pejoratives. The examination of the inner structure of the resulting derivatives is based on an innovative methodology that encompasses the theories and approaches of Construction Morphology, Componential Analysis, and Morphopragmatics. Following the principles of this methodology, pejorative words collected from dictionaries and corpora (a total of approximately 950 words) are abstracted into generalizations (or constructional schemas) where structural and functional similarities are used to cognitively trace the ways in which negative (or derisive) meaning is connected with a specific form. Through this multifaceted methodology, my analysis showcases the fact that the universal properties of ‘diminution’, ‘excess’, ‘resemblance’, and ‘metonymization’ are what underlie the making of pejorative meaning. These generalizations, along with the schematic representations of formatives, can help linguists, or linguistics enthusiasts in general, to understand the conventions and intricacy of lexical pejoration.

Book Project Everlasting

Download or read book Project Everlasting written by Mathew Boggs and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2007-06-05 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A heartwarming and revealing look at the wisdom drawn from successful marriages and the secrets to making love last, not from Ph.D.s or therapists but from more than 200 real couples who have walked the walk to more than forty years of marriage. Jaded by his parents' divorce, Mathew Boggs was a young man who'd lost all belief in lifelong love. After observing his grandparents who were madly in love after sixty-three years of marriage, Mat talked his best friend Jason into joining him on a cross-country search for America's greatest marriages. The two bumbling bachelors jumped in an RV and embarked on "Project Everlasting," a 12,000-mile cross-country adventure to discover what it takes to make love last. Each chapter of Project Everlasting is dedicated to one of the pressing questions the bachelors asked the couples, such as: —"How do you know you've found The One?" —"What's missing from today's marriages?" —"How do you keep the romance alive?" —"What's the most important ingredient for a solid marriage?" As the traveled the country, meeting happy couples from all walks of life, Mat and Jason began to understand why their own relationships hadn't worked out quite as planned. They also realized that what they were learning from their wise new friends could change everything for them and—through Project Everlasting—show their generation and generations to come how to build a marriage to last.
