Book Upgraded Cavities for the Positron Accumulator Ring of the APS

Download or read book Upgraded Cavities for the Positron Accumulator Ring of the APS written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upgraded versions of cavities for the APS positron accumulator ring (PAR) have been built and are being tested. Two cavities are in the PAR: a fundamental 9.8-MHz cavity and a twelfth harmonic 117.3-MHz cavity. Both cavities have been manufactured for higher voltage operation with improved Q-factors, reliability, and tuning capability. Both cavities employ current-controlled ferrite tuners for control of the resonant frequency. The harmonic cavity can be operated in either a pulsed mode or a CW mode. The rf properties of the cavities are presented.

Book Reduced Length Design of 9 8 MHz RF Accelerating Cavity for the Positron Accumulator Ring PAR of the Advanced Photon Source APS

Download or read book Reduced Length Design of 9 8 MHz RF Accelerating Cavity for the Positron Accumulator Ring PAR of the Advanced Photon Source APS written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 9.8-MHz RF accelerating cavity is developed for the first harmonic system in the APS PAR and an aluminum unit is tested. The design goal si 40 kV at the accelerating gap, Q-factor of (approximately) 7,000 for the accelerating mode, 1.2-m diameter, 1.6-m length with good mechanical strength and stability. The design employs no dielectric or ferrite loading for tuning. The cavity is a plunger-loaded reentrant coaxial structure; the end of the inner conductor facing the wall has a piston-shaped loading structure which consists of a circular disk and a cylinder. The RF characteristic of the cavity was investigated using the URMEL-T and MAFIA programs. Compared with a coaxial structure with lumped element capacitive loading, this design gives improved RF characteristics.

Book Commissioning of the Argonne Positron Accumulator Ring

Download or read book Commissioning of the Argonne Positron Accumulator Ring written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Advanced Photon Source (APS) injector consists of a 250-MeV electron linac, a 450-MeV positron linac, a 450-MeV positron accumulator ring (PAR), and a 7-GeV synchrotron. The purpose of the PAR is to accumulate and damp positrons from the 60-Hz linac during each cycle of the 2-Hz synchrotron, thus increasing the fill rate for the main ring. This paper discusses the rapid progress of PAR commissioning. Less than a year was required from first acceptance of beam to transfer of PAR operations to the APS Operations Group. PAR has been well characterized and already meets most of its design specifications. An accurate model has been developed for linear and chromatic properties. Hardware improvements are planned to allow specifications to be fully met.

Book Tune Measurement in the APS Ring

Download or read book Tune Measurement in the APS Ring written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The APS system will contain three rings. The first is a positron accumulator ring (PAR). Its function is to coalesce 24, 30-ns-long positron bunches into one 290-ps bunch. The second is the injector synchrotron (IS). It accelerates the 450-MeV positron bunches to 7 Gev for injection into the storage ring (SR). Betatron and synchrotron motion frequently occurs in circular machines, without any deliberate excitation. However, the amplitudes of this motion cannot be predicted. Therefore, it is desirable to have controlled ways to excite these modes. Two types of devices will be used to excite the beam. One will be a magnetic kicker or bumper. All rings already have these devices planned for the horizontal direction for injecting and extracting beams. Some of these magnets will be used for exiting horizontal betatron motion. In the storage ring, a special kicker will be installed to produce up to 1 mm amplitude motion in the vertical direction. Two 8.4-in striplines (SL) (1/4 wavelength at 352 MHz) will be installed on all rings. One stripline in each ring will be used to drive all three tunes, and the other stripline will be used as a pickup. In the PAR and IS, the pickup stripline will be in a dispersive region. This will allow observation of both betatron and synchrotron motions. In the SR, the stripline will be in a nondispersive region because it is not practical to install it in a dispersive region. To do synchrotron tune measurements in the SR, one of the button BPMs located in a dispersive region will be used. To minimize development effort, as much of the BPM system electronics as possible will be used in the tune measurement system. The BPM electronics uses the AMP/PM conversion technique. This system operates at 352 MHz. Thus, tune measurement components were also designed to operate at 352 MHz.
