Book Upgrade of a LabVIEW Based Data Acquisition System for Wind Tunnel Test of a 1 10 Scale OH 6A Helicopter Fuselage

Download or read book Upgrade of a LabVIEW Based Data Acquisition System for Wind Tunnel Test of a 1 10 Scale OH 6A Helicopter Fuselage written by Philipp A. Lines and published by . This book was released on 2003-06-01 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over half a century the NPS Aerolab Low Speed Wind Tunnel located in Halligan Hall of the Naval Postgraduate school has served to provide students and facility with meaningful aerodynamic data for research and problem analysis. New data acquisition hardware was installed three years ago but never fully verified, and contained no integrated software program to collect data from the strain-gauge balance pedestal. Existing National Instruments based hardware for the NPS low-speed wind tunnel was reconfigured to obtain data from the strain- gauge pedestal. Additionally, a data acquisition software program was written in LabVIEW(C) to accommodate the hardware. The Virtual Instruments (VI) program collects and plots accurate data from all four strain gauges in real-time, producing non-dimensional force and moment coefficients. A research study on the performance of an OH-6A helicopter fuselage was conducted. NPS Aerolab wind tunnel tests consisted of drag, lift, and pitching moment measurements of the OH-6A along yaw and angle-of attack sweeps. The results of the NPS wind tunnel data were compared against testing conducted on a full-scale OH-6A helicopter in NASA Ames' 40 ft. x 80ft. wind tunnel, along with the U.S. Army's Light Observation Helicopter (LOH) wind tunnel tests. Results of current testing substantiate the LabVIEW(C) code.

Book An Analytic Investigation of Accuracy Requirements for Onboard Instrumentation and Film Data for Dynamically Scaled Wind Tunnel Drop Models

Download or read book An Analytic Investigation of Accuracy Requirements for Onboard Instrumentation and Film Data for Dynamically Scaled Wind Tunnel Drop Models written by K. S. Keen and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytic study was conducted to evaluate anticipated ranges and required accuracies for onboard linear acceleration and angular rate (or acceleration) measurement equipment to be mounted within dynamically scaled wind tunnel drop models. Generic simulations of the separation motion of a tumbling fuel tank both at full scale and at 1/15th wind tunnel model scale were generated using an analytic trajectory simulation program coupled with a prescribed aerodynamic database. The simulations provide a basis for sizing the required instrumentation for proof of concept demonstrations of telemetry techniques in the wind tunnel. The simulations were also used as test cases to demonstrate extraction of aerodynamic information from drop data positions and orientations as read from film records via an inverse solution of the store equations of motion. The studies also aid identification and evaluation of inaccuracies associated with the basic dynamic scaling laws and standard film based data reduction techniques.

Book Development of a Data Acquisition System to Aid in the Aerodynamic Study of Various Helicopter Configurations

Download or read book Development of a Data Acquisition System to Aid in the Aerodynamic Study of Various Helicopter Configurations written by Patrick A. Witt and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis developed a data acquisition system to be used in conjunction with the 3.5' x 5.0' low speed wind tunnel at the Naval Postgraduate School. Interactive graphic programs were developed to aid in data acquisition and analysis. In addition, the internal balance that was designed by Major Scott Mair and Major Chris Sargent was redesigned to correct some problems encountered with the drag component. The balance was also instrumented to record the pitch and yaw moment components. A calibration rig was designed and constructed in order to evaluate the interactions to the different components. The equipment used and computer programs developed for data acquisition and analysis were adequate. However, balance calibration revealed problems with the calibration rig and location of the roll component strain gage. Both of these problems will have to be corrected before accurate readings can be expected from this balance design. Keywords: Data recuction; Landing gear design; Helicopter noses and tails. This book was released on 2006-10-27 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. air transportation system is very important for our economic well-being and national security. The nation is also the global leader in civil and military aeronautics, a position that needs to be maintained to help assure a strong future for the domestic and international air transportation system. Strong action is needed, however, to ensure that leadership role continues. To that end, the Congress and NASA requested the NRC to undertake a decadal survey of civil aeronautics research and technology (R&T) priorities that would help NASA fulfill its responsibility to preserve U.S. leadership in aeronautics technology. This report presents a set of strategic objectives for the next decade of R&T. It provides a set of high-priority R&T challengesâ€"-characterized by five common themesâ€"-for both NASA and non-NASA researchers, and an analysis of key barriers that must be overcome to reach the strategic objectives. The report also notes the importance of synergies between civil aeronautics R&T objectives and those of national security.

Book An Overview of Landing Gear Dynamics

Download or read book An Overview of Landing Gear Dynamics written by Jocelyn I. Pritchard and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On of the problems facing the aircraft community is landing gear dynamics, especially shimmy and brake-induced vibration. Shimmy and brake-induced vibrations can lead to accidents due to excessive wear and shortened life of gear parts and contribute to pilot and passenger discomfort. To increase understanding of these problems, a literature survey was performed. The major focus is on work from the last ten years. Some older publications are included to understand the longevity of the problem and the background from earlier researchers. The literature survey includes analyses, testing, modeling, and simulation of aircraft landing gear; and experimental validation and characterization of shimmy and brake-induced vibration of aircraft landing gear. The paper presents an overview of the problem, background information, and a history of landing gear dynamics problems and solutions. Based on the survey an assessment and recommendations of the most critically needed enhancements to the state of the art will be presented. The status of Langley work contributing to this activity will be given.
