Book Upfronts The Last Asylum

Download or read book Upfronts The Last Asylum written by Barbara Taylor and published by Penguin Canada. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July 1988, Canadian-born historian Barbara Taylor was admitted into Friern, a once-notorious asylum for the insane. The journey that took her there began when, overwhelmed by anxiety as she completed her doctoral studies in London, England, she found relief by dosing herself with booze and barbiturates. She then embarked on what would turn out to be a decades-long course of psychoanalysis. The analysis dredged up painful memories—of a philandering father, a largely absent but demanding mother, and, among other things, a succession of nannies back in Saskatoon. In the course of her illness and her struggle to recover from it, Taylor would twice be readmitted to Friern, and she took refuge in a variety of hostels and halfway houses before finding a semblance of stability and peace. This searingly honest, thought-provoking, and beautifully written memoir is the narrative of the author’s years of madness, set inside the wider story of our treatment of psychiatric illness from the great age of asylums to the current era of community care, big pharma, and quick fixes. It is a meditation on her own experience, but also that of millions of others in Europe and in North America who have suffered, are suffering, and will suffer from mental illness.

Book Money Marriage and Madness

Download or read book Money Marriage and Madness written by Kim E. Nielsen and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2020-06-22 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anna Ott died in the Wisconsin State Hospital for the Insane in 1893. She had enjoyed status and financial success first as a physician's wife and then as the only female doctor in Madison. Throughout her first marriage, attempts to divorce her abusive second husband, and twenty years of institutionalization, Ott determinedly shaped her own life. Kim E. Nielsen explores a life at once irregular and unexceptional. Historical and institutional structures, like her whiteness and laws that liberalized divorce and women's ability to control their property, opened up uncommon possibilities for Ott. Other structures, from domestic violence in the home to rampant sexism and ableism outside of it, remained a part of even affluent women's lives. Money, Marriage, and Madness tells a forgotten story of how the legal and medical cultures of the time shaped one woman—and what her life tells us about power and society in nineteenth century America.

Download or read book The treatment of asylum seekers written by Great Britain: Parliament: Joint Committee on Human Rights and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2007-03-30 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee's report considers human rights issues raised by the treatment of asylum seekers, from the time when they first claim asylum in the UK, through to either the granting of asylum, or, for asylum seekers whose claims are refused, their departure from the UK. The numbers claiming asylum in the UK increased rapidly during the late 1990s, and even though the numbers have reduced significantly every year since 2002, the issue of asylum remains high on the political and public agenda. The Government is required to "secure to everyone within their jurisdiction" the rights contained within the European Convention on Human Rights, including asylum seekers and refused asylum seekers. Issues discussed include: the relevant principal human rights standards and obligations which apply to the UK under the European Convention of Human Rights and other international instruments to which the UK is a party; the system and quality of support available; the provision of healthcare to asylum seekers and refused asylum seekers, in particular the impact of the overseas visitors' charging regulations for secondary healthcare which were introduced in 2004, and proposals to extend this charging scheme to primary care; the Government's reservation to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC); the use of detention of asylum seekers and the need for training in refugee and human rights; and the treatment of asylum seekers by the media.

This book was released on 2021-04-22 with total page 1453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do states have a duty to assimilate refugees to their own citizens? Are refugees entitled to freedom of movement, to be allowed to work, to have access to public welfare programs, or to be reunited with family members? Indeed, is there even a duty to admit refugees at all? This fundamentally rewritten second edition of the award-winning treatise presents the only comprehensive analysis of the human rights of refugees set by the UN Refugee Convention and international human rights law. It follows the refugee's journey from flight to solution, examining every rights issue both historically and by reference to the decisions of senior courts from around the world. Book excerpt: On the backbenches but still in the thick of it, Decline and Fall runs from Chris Mullin's sacking as a minister by Tony ('The Man') Blair in 2005 to the fall of New Labour in May 2010. Here is politics as it really is: entertaining encounters with constituents and conspirators, tantalising glimpses behind the scenes at the courts of Blair and Brown, all set against the background of the global financial crisis and the great expenses meltdown. Every bit as funny and insightful as his first volume A View From The Foothills, these new diaries provide a snapshot of life in the Westminster village. Book Fiscal Monitor April 2016

Download or read book Fiscal Monitor April 2016 written by International Monetary Fund. Fiscal Affairs Dept. and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2016-04-13 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global economy remains fragile at this time. While the recovery in advanced economies is softening, many emerging market and developing economies have experienced a significant economic slowdown, and some large countries show signs of distress. Global risk aversion has risen, and commodity prices have continued to fall since the April 2015 Fiscal Monitor. The weaker outlook and concerns about the ability of policymakers to provide an adequate and swift policy response have amplified downward risks and clouded global prospects. According to this issue of the Fiscal Monitor, the challenging environment calls for a comprehensive policy response to boost growth and reduce vulnerabilities. In particular, it is critical to identify policies that could lift productivity growth by promoting innovation. Fiscal policy can play an important role in stimulating innovation through its effects on research and development, entrepreneurship, and technology transfer.

Book The Refugee Surge in Europe

Download or read book The Refugee Surge in Europe written by Mr.Shekhar Aiyar and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2016-01-19 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the background of political turmoil in the Middle-East, Europe faces an unprecedented surge in asylum applications. In analyzing the economic impact of this inflow, this paper draws from the experience of previous economic migrants and refugees, mindful of the fact that the characteristics of economic migrants can be different from refugees. In the short-run, additional public expenditure will provide a small positive impact on GDP, concentrated in the main destination countries of Germany, Sweden and Austria. Over the longer-term, depending on the speed and success of the integration of refugees in the labor market, the increase in the labor force can have a more lasting impact on growth and the public finances. Here good policies will make an important difference. These include lowering barriers to labor markets for refugees, for example through wage subsidies to employers, and, in particular, reducing legal barriers to labor market participation during asylum process, removing obstacles to entrepreneurship/self-employment, providing job training and job search assistance, as well as language skills. While native workers often have legitimate concerns about the impact of immigrants on wages and employment, past experience indicates that any adverse effects are limited and temporary.
