Download or read book Your Healthy Pregnancy with Thyroid Disease written by Dana Trentini and published by Da Capo Lifelong Books. This book was released on 2016-06-28 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At minimum, 27 million Americans have thyroid disease. Despite being the majority of thyroid sufferers, women rarely know that thyroid problems increase their risk of pregnancy complications, including infertility, preeclampsia, miscarriage, premature delivery, and low birth weight. This awareness gap affects patients and doctors, who know little about the ramifications of an undiagnosed or under-treated thyroid condition on a mother and her unborn baby. Founder of HypothyroidMom.com Dana Trentini and thyroid health advocate and bestselling author Mary Shomon have both endured challenges with pregnancies due to thyroid disorders. In Your Healthy Pregnancy with Thyroid Disease, they team up to give readers the answers they need. With personal stories and cutting-edge medical advice from leading health practitioners, the book explains how to recognize thyroid symptoms, get properly diagnosed/treated, manage thyroid problems during pregnancy, overcome thyroid-related infertility, and deal with postpartum challenges.
Download or read book Growth Hormone Deficiency in Adults written by Jens O. L. Jørgensen and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been known for over 40 years that GH-deficient-children benefit from replacement with the hormone. But GH, essential for longitudinal growth, also plays a role after completion of final height. With the introduction of biosynthetic human GH 20 years ago, the use of GH was no longer restricted to severe growth retardation in hypopituitary children. This book will take the reader behind the myths of GH and into the real world of clinical endocrinology. The contributions stem from recognized clinicians and scientists who have been working in the field for decades. The contents encompass traditional end points of GH therapy such as body composition, bone biology and physical performance. Attention is also devoted to diagnostic aspects and side effects. Additional features range from clinical epidemiology to quality of life, and novel areas such as the impact of traumatic brain injury on pituitary function are also covered. The present volume of Frontiers of Hormone Research is essential reading for health care professionals interested in clinical endocrinology and GH.

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Behavioral Emergencies and Crises written by Phillip M. Kleespies and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Behavioral Emergencies and Crises includes the most up-to-date and valuable research on the evaluation and management of the most challenging patients or clients faced by mental health providers-individuals who are at high risk of suicide, of other-directed violence, or of becoming the victims of interpersonal violence. These are cases in which the outcome can be serious injury or death, and there can be negative consequences not only for the patient, but also for the patient's family and friends, for the assessing or treating clinician, and for the patient's clinic or medical center. Virtually all mental health clinicians with an active caseload will see individuals with such issues. This Handbook is comprised of chapters by leading clinicians, researchers, and scholars in this area of practice. It presents a framework for learning the skills needed for assessing and working competently with such high-risk individuals. Chapters draw a distinction between behavioral emergencies and crises, and between emergency intervention and crisis intervention. The book examines the inter-related aspects of the major behavioral emergencies; that is, for example, the degree to which interpersonal victimization may lead an individual on a pathway to later suicidal or violent behavior, or the degree to which suicidal individuals and violent individuals may share certain cognitive characteristics. This resource is not simply a knowledge base for behavioral emergencies; it also presents a method for reducing stress and acquiring skills in working with high-risk people.

This synthetic form of thyroxine is now one of the most prescribed drugs in the world. Book excerpt: "Frontiers In Thyroidology" assembles the prize lectures, symposia, and papers presented during the Ninth International Thyroid Congress in Sao Paulo, Brazil in September, 1985. This book represents the State-of the-Art in thyroid studies with its continuous expansion into the areas of immunology, molecular biology, clinical and environmental medicine. As its name also indicates, the material compiled in this volume defines important questions to be answered in basic and applied aspects of the thyroid. So, this book clearly demonstrates the rewards, excitement, and challenges posed by the thyroid gland. Once again, the thyroid gland, through its unique and important functions and implications in health and disease, has been able to congregate scientists throughout the world to communicate their findings, to share their expertise and experiences, and to strengthen their bonds of friendship and commitment to make a better world through their work. This publication consists of 309 papers in 19 different topics. The prize lectures and symposia review and update our knowledge in basic and clinical aspects of exceptional interest in the thyroid field. "Frontiers in Thyroidology" adds to a series of publications from previous interna tional thyroid meetings which includes: "Advances in Thyroid Research", London, 1960; "Current Topics in Thyroid Research", Rome, 1965; "Further Advances in Thyroid Research", Vienna, 1970; "Thyroid Research", Boston, 1975, and "Thyroid Research VIII", Sydney, 1980. Download or read book Graves Disease written by Basil Rapoport and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-06-30 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the perspective of the investigator, Graves' disease is a fascinating disorder with unique features and opportunities for study. The discovery in 1956 that Graves' disease was caused by a humoral factor, later shown to be an antibody to the TSH receptor, was a triumph for modern investigative medicine. Rapid progress is now being made in (i) understanding the molecular interaction between autoantibodies and the TSH receptor, (ii) identifying the genes that contribute to the predisposition to disease, (iii) developing an animal model of Graves' disease, and (iv) identifying the long-sought orbital antigen in ophthalmopathy. From the clinical standpoint, although Graves' disease is eminently treatable, there is no definitive cure. None of the therapeutic options are ideal. It is hoped that rapid progress in understanding the pathogenesis of the disease will lead to the ultimate goal of some form of immunotherapy that will make antithyroid drugs, radioiodine and thyroidectomy obsolete. The chapters in Graves' Disease: Pathogenesis and Treatment represent the viewpoints of many prominent clinicians and investigators working in the field. The editors are grateful for their contributions which cover an unusually comprehensive compendium of subjects relating to the disease.
