Book excerpt: This volume presents recent progress in the improvement of the nuclear database needed for the development of Generation IV nuclear energy systems.The Generation IV International Forum (GIF) identified six advanced concepts for sustainable nuclear energy production at competitive prices and with advanced safety, with special attention to nuclear non-proliferation and physical protection issues, minimization of long-lived radiotoxic waste, and optimum natural resource utilization System groups have been established for studying these concepts in detail, and nuclear data are an inherent part of these studies. This book reviews the work recently performed for the development of these systems.The contributions include an up-to-date overview of recent achievements in sensitivity analysis, model calculations, estimates of uncertainties, and the present status of nuclear databases with regard to their applications to Generation IV systems. In the workshop, special attention was given to the identification of nuclear data needs from sensitivity analysis of benchmark experiments and the treatment of uncertainties. The proceedings contain overviews of several experimental program and recent results of interest for the development of Generation IV systems.

Book excerpt: WIMS-D (Winfrith Improved Multigroup Scheme-D) is the name of a family of software packages for reactor lattice calculations and is one of the few reactor lattice codes available on non-commercial terms. WIMSD-5B was recently released from the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency Data Bank, and features major improvements in machine portability, as well as incorporating a few minor corrections. Used widely in many laboratories for research and power reactor calculations, one of WIMS-D's limitations was the associated nuclear constants library, which was based on nuclear data originating from the 1960s, with empirical adjustments to improve its performance. To remove this deficiency, a new library was generated, based on the most recent evaluated nuclear data files. This publication describes the definition of constants, the data processing methods and a list of more than 200 analyzed benchmarks that were used for library validations, and supports the newly generated library.--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: The Winfrith Improved Multigroup Scheme (WIMS) code has been used extensively throughout the world for power and research reactor lattice physics analysis. There are many WIMS versions currently in use. The D4 version selected by the RERTR program was originally developed in 1980). It was chosen for the accurate lattice physics capability and an unrestricted distribution privilege. The code and its 69-group library tape 166259 generated in Winfrith were obtained from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Radiation Shielding Information Center (RSIC) in 1992. Since that time the RERTR program has added three important features. The first was the capability to generate up to 20 broad-group bumup-dependent macroscopic or microscopic ISOTXS cross sections for each composition of the unit cell, a new ENDF/B-V based nuclear data library, and a new Supercell option. As a result of these modifications and other minor ones, the code is now named WIMS-D4M. A supplementary reference guide can be obtained from the RSIC that contains detailed explanations of all user options, library contents, along with several sample problems. Primary applications of WIMS for research reactor modeling do not require an extensive knowledge of all WIMS user options. This user guide is primarily addressed to the needs of the research reactor community although the code can be used for most thermal reactor lattices. The guide is written based on the experience of the RERTR staff with WIMS-D4M and will discuss only the most needed options for research reactor analyses.
