The part on Hinduism focuses on the classical Upanishads, the Yogasutras, the Bhagavad-Gita, and Ramanuja's commentary on them. Book excerpt: This is a study of the Upanishads, part of the Vedas, the huge body of millennia-old writings that is at the heart of Hindu wisdom. At the same time they represent some of India's highest achievements in world literature. The Upanishads focus on the nature and reality of Brahman or the universal soul. Every person's soul or atman longs for union with the universal and this is possible if we abandon the transient and the material and contemplate the eternal. The path to freedom is narrow but the Upanishads teach that all can escape karma for true liberation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook in practical spirituality proposes that the level of stress, violence, fear and disconnect from Nature in the global society has risen in direct proportion to a fall in the collective level of conscious awareness. In order to reverse this trend a conscious impulse is required. Human beings need to rediscover the mystical underpinning of all religions and the engine of spiritual transformation: the art of presence. Only by learning to be present and stay present is it possible to dissolve harmful energy - in the form of false opinions and negative feelings - and create positive energy that imbues actions with intelligence, compassion and respect for the sacredness of all life. To this end, a practice in sensory awareness is offered. It is called 'the Pause'. Pausing affirms the body-mind continuum by empowering the senses as conduits of conscious awareness. When pausing is then applied to ordinary activities such as speaking, working, thinking and relating to others, spiritual evolution accelerates. The fruit of a re-awakened life is healing — for ourselves, for society, and for the entire Earth community.

Book The Religious Mysticism of the Upanishads Selected Texts with Translations and Notes Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Religious Mysticism of the Upanishads Selected Texts with Translations and Notes Classic Reprint written by Robert Gordon Milburn and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Mysticism of the Upanishads, Selected d104s With Translations and Notes No apology is needed for an attempt to do justice to the elements of moral and religious value contained in the Upanishads concurrently with full regard to the results obtained by the literary criticism of recent writers. What is needed is an apology for having attempted such a task myself. To be properly accomplished it should presuppose not only a very thorough knowledge of the Upanishads but also a wide range of other Sanskrit reading. Earlier and contemporary Sanskrit and Pali literature should have been critically studied, and the later developments of the Vedanta should be thoroughly known. I possess no such qualifications, and do not wish to impose upon the reader by suggesting a claim to be recognised as a pundit, a claim to which I can make no pretensions. I was urged to undertake this work by a friend who is himself a Sanskrit scholar, and but for him should never have under taken it. At the same time, the subject deeply interest ed me and I could see the possibilities of it. My hope is that this selection and translation will be of religious use, if not directly, then indirectly, as leading to a better attempt in the same direction. The combination of devotional value with critical accuracy is never easy to achieve. It is that, however, at which I have aimed.
