Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE JOHN LLEWELLYN RHYS MEMORIAL PRIZE 'Her art is ignited by voice, as you hear it, is unquestionable' ALI SMITH, GUARDIAN 'Distinctive, pared-down style' DAVID EVANS, INDEPENDENT 'Unflinching look at the lives of working-class women' DAILY MAIL Nell Dunn's scenes of London life, as it was lived in the early Sixties in the industrial slums of Battersea, have few parallels in contemporary writing. The exuberant, uninhibited, disparate world she found in the tired old streets and under the railway arches is recaptured in these closely linked sketches; and the result is pure alchemy. In this novel, we witness clip-joint hustles, petty thieving, candid sexual encounters, casual birth and casual death. She has a superb gift for capturing colloquial speech and the characters observed in these pages convey that caustic, ironic, and compassionate feeling for life, in which a turn of phrase frequently contains startling flashes of poetry. Battersea, that teeming wasteland of brick south of the Thames, has found its poet in Nell Dunn and Up the Junction is her touchingly truthful and timeless testimonial to it.

Book The Junction Boys

Download or read book The Junction Boys written by Jim Dent and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2000-09-09 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Junction Boy is now a television movie produced by ESPN, starring Tom Berenger as Bryant. The legendary Paul "Bear" Bryant is recognized nationwide as one of the greatest coaches ever. So why did he always cite his 1-9 A&M team of 1954 as his favorite? This is the story of a remarkable team - and the beginning of the legend. The Junction Boys tells the story of Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant's legendary training camp in the small town of Junction, Texas. In a move that many consider the salvation of the Texas A&M football program, Coach Bryant put 115 players through the most grueling practices ever imagined. Only a handful of players survived the entire 10 days, but they braved the intense heat of the Texas sun and the burning passion of their coach, and turned a floundering team into one of the nation's best. The Junction Boys is more than just a story of tough practices without water breaks. An extraordinary fellowship was forged from the mind-numbing pain. The thirty-five survivors bonded together like no other team in America. They profited from the Junction experience; the knowledge they took back with them to College Station, about themselves and what they were capable of, would be used for the rest of their lives. In vivid and powerful images reminiscent of Friday Night Lights, Hoosiers, and The Last Picture Show, these young men and their driven coach come to life. The Junction Boys contains all the hallmarks of a classic sports story, and it combines America's love of college football with an extraordinary story of perseverance and triumph.

Book excerpt: WWW.BWESTONROOK.COM I first met Deems Ellison in Grand Junction, Colorado while serving my two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At the time, however, I didn’t know his real name. I knew him as Elder Andrew McConkie, the standoffish young missionary who was transferred into my district and put in charge of training a brand new Elder. I only knew him for a short time and he never seemed to be anything more than a rock in my shoe — an annoyance that I couldn’t seem to shake. Back then, I had no clue of the grand adventure that was going on right under my nose. But I guess that’s the point; I wasn’t supposed to know. I didn’t learn what really happened until eight years later when Deems Ellison unexpectedly telephoned me at my home in Sacramento, California and asked me to meet with him. He had discovered that I fancied myself a writer and he wanted me to help him tell this story. I jumped at the chance. There was nothing for me to lose. The Sacramento Union, “the oldest daily in the West,” was shutting down its presses forever and I would soon be facing unemployment lines. My first attempt at writing a novel had failed miserably, culminating in a dozen dog-eared copies of my manuscript stacked in my closet. But I think the biggest reason for my eagerness to work on this project with Deems Ellison was my overwhelming curiosity. I had a lot of questions about what happened in Grand Junction during August of 1988. So when Mr. Ellison, one of the few people who knew the real story, called me, eager to spill his guts, the temptation was too great to resist. It was like finding expired milk in the back of the refrigerator -- I knew it was going to stink, but I just couldn’t resist taking a whiff. Ellison wanted to meet me back where it all happened. So I told my family I needed a vacation alone and I made tracks for Grand Junction. It amazed me how little his appearance had changed. His face was still youthful and his silvery hair was close-cropped, just as it had been in the mission field. However, the more time I spent with him, the more I realized I had misjudged him when I was his District Leader and knew him as Elder McConkie. He was actually a very likable person. In fact, I found myself admiring him and envying the excitement he had seen. Unfortunately, I think the Deems Ellison of today is a man filled with regret. Not the average kind of regret that comes from doing something wrong, but the agonizing enigma of wondering how things could have been if only he had done something right. Still, he seems to look back on our time in Grand Junction with a fondness and sentimentality that even I cannot fully share. We got connecting rooms at the Westgate Inn and I spent nearly every waking hour with my former annoyance for a week, recording his story and making outlines for this book. He shared with me a thick binder full of notes and reminders from that time. He said he had been planning to tell this story for a long time, but wasn’t sure how he was going to do it until he discovered my occupation. What follows is Deems Ellison’s story in essentially his own words taken from my interviews with him and his journal notes. One more thing: my attorney tells me that I would face a stack of lawsuits unless I present this story as a work of fiction. So it is fiction. Elder Andrew McConkie never served in the Colorado-Denver Mission. Deems Ellison is a fictional character, as are all of the others in this book. If any people or events in this story resemble real life, it is just a coincidence. Everything in this book is just a figment of my overactive imagination. B. WESTON ROOK

Book excerpt: In these dazzling stories, Mavis Gallant immerses us in the lives of ordinary people swept up in the upheaval and displacement that followed in the wake of the Second World War. A bitter yet stubbornly pragmatic woman prepares for what promises to be another disastrous Christmas with her mother, her aunt, and her would-be-war-hero uncle. Engaged to another man, a woman travels to Paris with her older lover and his young son. A wife recollects her complicated relationship with the refugee woman who had a brief affair with her husband. Small mercies form the backbone of a friendship between an actress and a police commissioner. A career soldier, now discharged and stranded in France, makes his first adjustments to life as a civilian. In elegant, diamond-sharp prose, Gallant distills the vanities, absurdities, and contradictions that lie at the heart of human behavior and fashions stories of rare power and insight.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once known as Junction Grove, the rich history of Englewood began in the mid-1800s as the area quickly developed into a rail and commerce crossroads. Junction Grove changed its name to Englewood in 1868, and in 1889, it became part of the City of Chicago. With its cross streets at 63rd and Halsted, the four railroad stations, and the 63rd Street 'L' stop, Englewood has long been a transportation hub of the south west side. This easy access helped to make Englewood one of the largest outlying business districts in the country for much of the first half of the 20th century. But Englewood has changed over the years. Now a struggling urban area, it is nevertheless known for its grassroots organizations and strong sense of community, on the forefront of revival.Chicago's Englewood Neighborhood: At the Junction explores the history of the people, places, commerce, and community that have created this ever-changing neighborhood.

He realizes that he must have heard something in one of his truth-telling sessions that someone didn’t want him to know. Decker has to go on the run and figure out why he’s been targeted. There’s also a government agent hunting him who seems to know absolutely everything about Decker Roberts’ identities, real and false—and other people of “his kind.” How will Decker find out which truth was endangering his life? Who betrayed him and revealed all his secrets? Decker needs to find answers quickly, before knowing the truth turns from a gift into a deadly curse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life, Alice McKinley feels, is just one big embarrassment. Here she is, about to be a teenager and she doesn't know how. It's worse for her than for anyone else, she believes, because she has no role model. Her mother has been dead for years. Help and advice can only come from her father, manager of a music store, and her nineteen-year-old brother, who is a slob. What do they know about being a teen age girl? What she needs, Alice decides, is a gorgeous woman who does everything right, as a roadmap, so to speak. If only she finds herself, when school begins, in the classroom of the beautiful sixth-grade teacher, Miss Cole, her troubles will be over. Unfortunately, she draws the homely, pear-shaped Mrs. Plotkin. One of Mrs. Plotkin's first assignments is for each member of the class to keep a journal of their thoughts and feelings. Alice calls hers "The Agony of Alice," and in it she records all the embarrassing things that happen to her. Through the school year, Alice has lots to record. She also comes to know the lovely Miss Cole, as well as Mrs. Plotkin. And she meets an aunt and a female cousin whom she has not really known before. Out of all this, to her amazement, comes a role model -- one that she would never have accepted before she made a few very important discoveries on her own, things no roadmap could have shown her. Alice moves on, ready to be a wise teenager.
