Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Up-Country Letters Dear Reader: It is scarcely necessary to repeat to you the some-time discussions which have been had in regard to the publication of these letters. Time, in giving them a certain perspective, has also removed any unpleasant doubt as to the propriety of showing them to whoever will care to read. A friend suggests that they should be called "Up-Sky Letters," and when you come upon a page which offers you no special point or purport, it may be charitable to read it as "up-sky," keeping your sky, - for tone's sake, - over the Up-Country. Book Letters From a Country House Classic Reprint

Download or read book Letters From a Country House Classic Reprint written by Thomas Anderton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From a Country House These letters - originally published in the Midland Counties Herald - were begun without the least idea of republication. In compliance, however, with numerous requests, a series of them now appear in revised book form. If they have any merit at all, it may perhaps be owing to the fact that they are entirely the result of my own observations, experiences, and reflections, and are not made up from other books upon a similar subject. At the same time, I do not flatter myself that I have discovered anything fresh, or have noticed anything hitherto unobserved. I have, for the most part, simply told an old tale, but one that will be ever new while Nature repeats her old story of enduring consistency, yet ever recurring change. I desire to acknowledge the kindness of Viscount Cobham - better known as Lord Lyttelton - for allowing me (in common with some other neighbours and tenants) free access to Hagley Park, where I have observed so many of the picturesque and varied effects described in the following pages. The road was covered with carriages and riders; and, at the ghaut, a large set of our particular. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Up the Country: Letters Written to Her Sister From the Upper Provinces of India We came into these lovely riant scenes on Sunday morning. They are a composition of low stunted trees, marsh, tigers and snakes, with a stream that sometimes looks like a very wide lake and then becomes so narrow that the jungle wood scrapes against the sides of the flat - and this morning scraped away all G.'s jalousies, which are a great loss. I never saw such a desolate scene: no birds flying about - there is no grain for them to eat. We have met only one native boat, which must have been there since the Deluge. Occasionally there is a bamboo stuck up with a bush tied to it, which is to recall the cheerful fact that there a tiger has carried off a man. None of our Hindus, though they are starving, will go on shore to cook - and, indeed, it would be very unsafe. It looks as if this bit of world had been left unfinished when land and sea were originally parted. The flat is dreadfully hot at night; but not more uncomfortable than a boat must neces sarily be in this climate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letter to His Countrymen The private citizen who comes before the world with matter relating to himself, is bound to show a better reason for the mea sure than the voluntary impulses of self-love. In my own case, it might, perhaps, appear a sufficient excuse for the step now taken, that I am acting chiefly on the defensive; that the editors of several of the public journals have greatly exceeded their legitimate functions, by animadverting on my motives and private affairs; and that assertions, Opinions, and acts, have been openly attributed to me, that I have never uttered, entertained, or done. When an individual is thus dragged into notice, the right of self-vindication would seem to depend on a principle of natural justice; and yet, if I know the springs of my own conduct, I am less influenced by any personal considerations in what I am now doing, than by a wish to check a. Practice that has already existed too long among us; which appears to me to be on the increase; and which, while it is degrading to the character, if persisted in, may become dangerous to the institutions of this country. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Budget of Letters, or Things Which I Saw Abroad Here we lay at anchor, the wind being ahead, and how long we shall have to stay is more than we can tell. We had an opportunity this afternoon to go up to the city with the captain, but we preferred to stay on board ship, that we may begin to feel at home before we get out to sea, for as you may well imagine every thing is strange to us. As we stepped on board this morning, our ears were saluted with sounds that seemed more appropriate to a farm-yard than a ship. We turned suddenly and saw a meek, innocent look ing cow, apparently as much out of her element as we were; and that she might have somewhat to remind her of her country home, sundry pigs were squealing near by, which sounds, ever and anon, were relieved by the noisy geese, the gobbling turkey, the cackling hen, and the quacking duck. From the appearance of this live stock, we judge that we shall want for none of the good things of this life, and with all this preparation for the body, the mind is not neglected.
