Book Bootstrap Leadership

Download or read book Bootstrap Leadership written by Steve Arneson and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 2010-05-10 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arneson was named one of America’s top leadership consultants by Leadership Excellence magazine in 2008 Enables leaders at all levels to design a complete self-directed leadership development program Concise, accessible, practical and flexible Leadership training can be inconsistent in the best of times. In tough economic times it’s often one of the first things that even the most progressive companies cut back on. And you can’t necessarily depend on finding that mentor you’ve been looking for either. Now more than ever, if you’re going to advance your career you need to lift yourself up by your own bootstraps. But not entirely: Steve Arneson is here to give you a boost. In Bootstrap Leadership Arneson, one of America’s top leadership coaches, offers a complete blueprint for designing your own personal leadership development program. In fifty brief, to-the-point chapters he provides practical ideas and techniques that have been proven successful in his work with executives at Fortune 500 companies like AOL, PepsiCo and Capital One. Surprisingly, most of these ideas cost nothing to implement, nor do they require any elaborate equipment or infrastructure—they’re open to anyone with sufficient initiative, drive and ambition. The chapters are entirely self-contained and can be read in any order and at any pace. You can read one a week and you’ll have a comprehensive year-long self-improvement program (with two weeks off for vacation). Or you can choose a chapter that speaks to a particular challenge you’re facing at work or one that just seems intriguing. There’s a self-assessment at the beginning of the book to suggest specific chapters that fit your developmental needs. No one is going to just hand that next promotion. You have to earn it by developing and demonstrating your leadership skills. And ultimately it’s not just about you—true leaders make everyone around them better. Bootstrap Leadership shows you how.

Book Bootstraps Need Boots

Download or read book Bootstraps Need Boots written by Hugh Segal and published by On Point Press. This book was released on 2019-11-01 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than four decades, Hugh Segal has been one of the leading voices of progressive conservatism in Canada. A self-described Red Tory warrior who disdains “bootstrap” approaches to poverty, he has always promoted policies, especially a basic annual income, to help the most economically vulnerable. Why would a life-long Tory support something so radical? In this revealing memoir, Segal shares how his life and experiences brought him to this most unlikely of places, beginning with his childhood in a poor immigrant family in Montreal to his time as a chief of staff for Prime Minister Mulroney and to his more recent work as an advisor on a basic income pilot project for the Ontario Liberal government. This book is a passionate argument not only for why a basic annual income makes economic sense, but for why it is the right thing to do.

  • Publisher : HarperCollins

  • Pages : 296 pages

Download or read book Bootstrapped written by Alissa Quart and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2023-03-14 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unsparing, incisive, yet ultimately hopeful look at how we can shed the American obsession with self-reliance that has made us less healthy, less secure, and less fulfilled The promise that you can “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” is central to the story of the American Dream. It’s the belief that if you work hard and rely on your own resources, you will eventually succeed. However, time and again we have seen how this foundational myth, with its emphasis on individual determination, brittle self-sufficiency, and personal accomplishment, does not help us. Instead, as income inequality rises around us, we are left with shame and self-blame for our condition. Acclaimed journalist Alissa Quart argues that at the heart of our suffering is a do-it-yourself ethos, the misplaced belief in our own independence and the conviction that we must rely on ourselves alone. Looking at a range of delusions and half solutions—from “grit” to the false Horatio Alger story to the rise of GoFundMe—Quart reveals how we have been steered away from robust social programs that would address the root causes of our problems. Meanwhile, the responsibility for survival has been shifted onto the backs of ordinary people, burdening generations with debt instead of providing the social safety net we so desperately need. Insightful, sharply argued, and characterized by Quart’s lively writing and deep reporting, and for fans of Evicted and Nickel and Dimed, Bootstrapped is a powerful examination of what ails us at a societal level and a plan for how we can free ourselves from these self-defeating narratives.

  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book Tightrope written by Nicholas D. Kristof and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • With stark poignancy and political dispassion Tightrope addresses the crisis in working-class America while focusing on solutions to mend a half century of governmental failure. This must-read book from the authors of Half the Sky “shows how we can and must do better” (Katie Couric). "A deft and uniquely credible exploration of rural America, and of other left-behind pockets of our country. One of the most important books I've read on the state of our disunion."—Tara Westover, author of Educated Drawing us deep into an “other America,” the authors tell this story, in part, through the lives of some of the people with whom Kristof grew up, in rural Yamhill, Oregon. It’s an area that prospered for much of the twentieth century but has been devastated in the last few decades as blue-collar jobs disappeared. About a quarter of the children on Kristof’s old school bus died in adulthood from drugs, alcohol, suicide, or reckless accidents. While these particular stories unfolded in one corner of the country, they are representative of many places the authors write about, ranging from the Dakotas and Oklahoma to New York and Virginia. With their superb, nuanced reportage, Kristof and WuDunn have given us a book that is both riveting and impossible to ignore.

Book Hand to Mouth

Download or read book Hand to Mouth written by Linda Tirado and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The real-life Nickel and Dimed—the author of the wildly popular “Poverty Thoughts” essay tells what it’s like to be working poor in America. ONE OF THE FIVE MOST IMPORTANT BOOKS OF THE YEAR--Esquire “DEVASTATINGLY SMART AND FUNNY. I am the author of Nickel and Dimed, which tells the story of my own brief attempt, as a semi-undercover journalist, to survive on low-wage retail and service jobs. TIRADO IS THE REAL THING.”—Barbara Ehrenreich, from the Foreword As the haves and have-nots grow more separate and unequal in America, the working poor don’t get heard from much. Now they have a voice—and it’s forthright, funny, and just a little bit furious. Here, Linda Tirado tells what it’s like, day after day, to work, eat, shop, raise kids, and keep a roof over your head without enough money. She also answers questions often asked about those who live on or near minimum wage: Why don’t they get better jobs? Why don’t they make better choices? Why do they smoke cigarettes and have ugly lawns? Why don’t they borrow from their parents? Enlightening and entertaining, Hand to Mouth opens up a new and much-needed dialogue between the people who just don’t have it and the people who just don’t get it.

Book How to Pull Your Self up by Your Bootstraps When You Have No Boots

Download or read book How to Pull Your Self up by Your Bootstraps When You Have No Boots written by Winston T. Hatch and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-11-13 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As I am writing this I realize some of the stories are a little fare out, might be difficult to believer, but I assure you they are all true, and I lived them. I used only first names to protect both the guilty, and innocent. I also vaguely de-scribed locations, and companies for the same reasons. I’m about to reach my 86th birthday, have been retired for over 20 years, and I doubt if anyone men-tioned is still alive. I started this book at the encouragement, and support of my Daughter to preserve the life of us old timers, who grew up in a world far different from what we have now. The amount of news, and information I am exposed to in one day now is about equal to what I was exposed to in a year when I was 8 years old, and World War 2 started. My story is not unique, it is only one of many, some far more interesting, and they’re disappearing rapidly as we pass on. I encourage these old timers to write them down or record them. But be prepared for as you write your life stories your going to almost relive them, your going to have time to think about them, when at the time you didn’t. Your views, and values may have change with time, and are now different. As I look back over my life I have had many successes, and failures. Your failures you remember, they hang around your neck forever, and influ-ence your life without you being aware of it. Your successes you soon forget, and assume that’s the way life’s supposed to be. The only successes I can take pride in is those of my Children, both of them have been immensely successful-ly, they both have traveled, and worked throughout the world. I and my Wife Pat have been blessed. I hope you enjoyed my life.
