On the first day of the second month of the second year after the sons of Israel departed Egypt, at the base of Mount Sinai, God directs Moses to take a census of the congregation of the sons of Israel by their families, by their fathers' households, according to the of names, every male, head by head from twenty years old and upward, whoever is able to go out to war in Israel. This book details thirty-eight years of wandering in the desert. Spies were sent out to investigate the Land of Canaan. They brought back a disparaging report displeasing to God. The next thirty-eight years are tumultuous. Miriam, Moses' sister becomes leprous, Moses' authority is challenged by Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. God affirms Aarons's priesthood, fiery serpents, encounters with Balaam and Balak, and a second census is taken. Book excerpt: EXODUS-meaning Exit God said to Abram, "Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, where they will be enslaved and oppressed four hundred years. But I will also judge the nation whom they will serve, and afterward, they will come out with many possessions. And as for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried at a good old age. Then in the fourth generation, they shall return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete." This is "The Sons of Israel's" exit story The sons of Israel were invited to live in Egypt by the Pharaoh. Joseph, son of Jacob called Israel, Viceroy of Egypt, oversaw Egypt's welfare. The kindness shown to Joseph and his family by the Pharaoh allowed the Israelites to grow unmolested in great numbers. A new king of Egypt who did not know Joseph or his contribution to Egypt's good health only saw foreigners living in his country. Concerned with self-preservation began a process of oppression and enslavement of the sons of Israel. Take note there are two things going on here, the deliverance of an oppressed people and the building of a nation of people complete with a set of rules to live by. In this book, you will learn of Moses, the ten plagues, the "Passover," passage through the Red Sea, the burning bush, Mount Sinai, Aaron the priest, the golden calf, the "Ten Commandments," "Manna," the bread from heaven, the Sabbath day, social and economic regulations, the Tabernacle, the breach of the "Covenant" and much, much more.

Book excerpt: Hardly are there any issues in life that are more emotive and contentious than religion. Part of the reason for this is that rarely do any two religions agree on most of their teachings about deity and humanity: there is so much divisiveness and mutual distrust. Christianity is not spared these mutual acrimony and disaffection, even within itself. Thus, there are inside it such characterizations as Orthodox, Pentecostals, Evangelicals, etc, with each claiming superiority of spirituality over and above one another, and citing portions of the Bible to argue its positions. But this has erected confusion in the minds of many, who find it difficult to dissect what are right or wrong doctrines in the face of one group of Christians accepting certain practices or beliefs, while another group condemns the same things. Unzipped! traces these doctrinal crises, in part, to misrepresentation of the two parts of the Bible: Old and New Testaments, submitting that biblical Christianity is all about what Christ and His disciples taught and practiced. In other words, it posits that if Christ and His apostles did not teach or practice a doctrine, Christians do not have to bother about it. The book challenges all who call on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ to look up to, and live for Him, as the author and finisher of their faith. It therefore contends that biblical Christianity, as opposed to its religious version, does not admit of syncretism.

Book The Gospel According to Leviticus

Download or read book The Gospel According to Leviticus written by David Kalas and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2019-03-19 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you struggle with knowing how the Old Testament law aligns with the good news found in the New Testament? Following up on When Did God Become a Christian?, author and pastor David Kalas explores what he sees as a rather significant hole in so many American Christians’ experience. For many, while the New Testament is seen as the good news of God’s love through Jesus, the law is set aside as tedious, troubling, or irrelevant. Some even see it as an example of an unloving God in the Hebrew Bible. If we were looking for a ‘review’ on Amazon of the Law, the Psalms would be the five-star. The Psalmist goes on and on, thanking God for it, calling it perfect, and claiming that it revives the soul. In his thoughtful and assuring style, Kalas would like to help readers rediscover that experience of the Old Testament Law. Additional components include a comprehensive Leader Guide for small group study.

Book Sovereign Authority and the Elaboration of Law in the Bible and the Ancient Near East

Download or read book Sovereign Authority and the Elaboration of Law in the Bible and the Ancient Near East written by Dylan R. Johnson and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five Pentateuchal texts (Lev 24:10-23; Num 9:6-14; Num 15:32-36; Num 27:1-11; Num 36:1-12) offer unique visions of the elaboration of law in Israel's formative past. In response to individual legal cases, Yahweh enacts impersonal and general statutes reminiscent of biblical and ancient Near Eastern law collections. From the perspective of comparative law, Dylan R. Johnson proposes a new understanding of these texts as biblical rescripts: a legislative technique that enabled sovereigns to enact general laws on the basis of particular legal cases. Typological parallels drawn from cuneiform and Roman law illustrate the complex ideology informing the content and the form of these five cases. The author explores how latent conceptions of law, justice, and legislative sovereignty shaped these texts, and how the Priestly vision of law interacted with and transformed earlier legal traditions.

It's the hot topic of the moment. Christians, the church and the Bible seem to be out of step with modern attitudes towards homosexuality. And there is growing hostility towards those who hold a different view to the culture's. So is God homophobic? And how do we relate to both Christians and non-Christians who experience same-sex attraction? In this short, simple book, Sam Allberry wants to help confused Christians understand what God has said about these questions in the scriptures. Drawing on his own experience, he offers a positive and liberating way forward through the debate. This revised and updated version includes answers to some new questions, including: * Should Christians attend gay weddings? * Isn't the Christian view of sexuality dangerous and harmful? * Is it sinful to experience same-sex attraction?

Book Leviticus

    Book Details:
  • Author : Johnson M. Kimuhu
  • Publisher : Peter Lang
  • Release : 2008
  • ISBN : 9781433102004
  • Pages : 464 pages

Download or read book Leviticus written by Johnson M. Kimuhu and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whereas many books in this field deal with individual aspects or texts of the study of family laws, Leviticus: The Priestly Laws and Prohibitions from the Perspective of Ancient Near East and Africa examines extensively biblical texts, ancient Near Eastern text, and oral traditions from Africa. Thus, three different cultures converge: the world of the Hebrew Bible, the world of the ancient Near East, and the world of Africa. This volume examines in detail the history of the development of ancient laws in general and family laws in particular, especially the laws relating to marriages between close relatives. Furthermore, Johnson M. Kimuhu looks at prohibitions and taboos in Africa and the problems they pose with regard to the interpretation and translation of difficult biblical concepts into African languages. In that sense, Kimuhu provides an example of how to contextualize or integrate African traditions into the study of biblical Hebrew, and he also offers insights into the current debate on the study of kinship from the point of view of social/cultural anthropology and the Hebrew Bible legal system. Teachers, students, and researchers in biblical studies, ancient Near Eastern studies, African traditions, and social/cultural anthropology will find this book helpful in their quest to understand family laws, prohibitions, and taboos.

Book Deuteronomy 28 and the Aramaic Curse Tradition

Download or read book Deuteronomy 28 and the Aramaic Curse Tradition written by Laura Elizabeth Quick and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study considers the relationship of Deuteronomy 28 to the curse traditions of the ancient Near East. It focuses on the linguistic and cultural means of the transmission of these traditions to the book of Deuteronomy. Laura Quick examines a broad range of materials, including Old Aramaic inscriptions, attempting to show the value of these Northwest Semitic texts as primary sources to reorient our view of an ancient world usually seen through a biblical or Mesopotamian lens. By studying these inscriptions alongside the biblical text, Deuteronomy 28 and the Aramaic Curse Tradition increases our knowledge of the early history and function of the curses in Deuteronomy 28. This has implications for our understanding of the date of the composition of the book of Deuteronomy, and the reasons behind its production. The ritual realm which stands behind the use of curses and the formation of covenants in the biblical world is also explored, arguing that the interplay between orality and literacy is essential to understanding the function and form of the curses in Deuteronomy. This book contributes to our understanding of the book of Deuteronomy and its place within the literary history of ancient Israel and Judah, with implications for the composition of the Pentateuch or Torah as a whole.

Book Illuminating Leviticus

Download or read book Illuminating Leviticus written by Calum Carmichael and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2006-12-04 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origin of law in the Hebrew Bible has long been the subject of scholarly debate. Until recently, the historico-critical methodologies of the academy have yielded unsatisfactory conclusions concerning the source of these laws which are woven through biblical narratives. In this original and provocative study, Calum Carmichael—a leading scholar of biblical law and rhetoric—suggests that Hebrew law was inspired by the study of the narratives in Genesis through 2 Kings. Discussing particular laws found in the book of Leviticus—addressing issues such as the Day of Atonement, consumption of meat that still has blood, the Jubilee year, sexual and bodily contamination, and the treatment of slaves—Carmichael links each to a narrative. He contends that biblical laws did not emerge from social imperatives in ancient Israel, but instead from the careful, retrospective study of the nation’s history and identity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God's favor towards some serves God's plan for the larger world. The Bible's affirmation of Israel's divine election is often ignored or even repudiated by contemporary Christians and Jews who are scandalized by the possibility that God might favor one person or group over another. Beginning with the stories of family rivalry in Genesis and in working through a host of other biblical texts, Joel Kaminsky explores the dynamics of election. Why does God favor certain people? How do the chosen and non-chosen interact? And what might these texts teach us about God's intention for the world?

Book The Authority of Law in the Hebrew Bible and Early Judaism

Download or read book The Authority of Law in the Hebrew Bible and Early Judaism written by Jonathan Vroom and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Authority of Law in the Hebrew Bible and Early Judaism, Vroom identifies a development in the authority of written law that took place in early Judaism. Ever since Assyriologists began to recognize that the Mesopotamian law collections did not function as law codes do today—as a source of binding obligation—scholars have grappled with the question of when the Pentateuchal legal corpora came to be treated as legally binding. Vroom draws from legal theory to provide a theoretical framework for understanding the nature of legal authority, and develops a methodology for identifying instances in which legal texts were treated as binding law by ancient interpreters. This method is applied to a selection of legal-interpretive texts: Ezra-Nehemiah, Temple Scroll, the Qumran rule texts, and the Samaritan Pentateuch.

Book Death in Early New England

Download or read book Death in Early New England written by Robert A. Geake and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2023-07-24 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death in early New England came early and often during those harsh first decades of settlement. Epidemics, hunger, accidents and childbirth contributed to a heavy toll in New England. Disease in some cases erased entire families, and almost always affected the majority of individuals in the communities. For most families, death was still a private affair. Traditions brought over with European customs and others that were strictly American were eventually interwoven, and these ceremonies, tokens and portraits of remembrance became part of these rites and rituals of mourning. Other forms of remembrance were carved into stone with heart-wrung epitaphs, the cause of death and brief biographies. Burial sites themselves evolved from family plots and church graveyards to public, garden-like cemeteries. Historian Robert A. Geake explores the development of rites and rituals of death in this New World.
