Download or read book Unzipped a Revelation written by Todd A. Rehnquist and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2012-05 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WHY A REVELATION? In a Revelation of Conflict for the Soul Becoming, there is a question that is being asked of all who might pick up this book and press through from cover to cover. The premise of this writing is to ask you one simple question and to ask it in many different applications as our lives are all moving through distinct seasons. Why does anyone need a revelation? It is for the purpose of gaining a knowing that comes not from this realm but from the realm where this domain was created. If that peaks your interest then I can't wait for you to read and glean and ask for more of why? WHY NOW? Why now is not for me to answer as much as it is for the Lord of Heaven to reveal to you, why not now? We wake up, we go to sleep and we wake up, maybe? The time is now! It is time to answer the question that has not been asked in a way that has brought you the confirmation that you need. You need to know, and you need to be known! The time is now and it is now for this reason; tomorrow is a hope and just because it is, does not mean that you are guaranteed to have it, at least in this kingdom. WHY ME? Why you is for one simple reason. Until the revelation becomes in you, you will never know why and for what purpose you were created. You were created to become the Bride of Christ. This was always the Father's desire, that you would have intimacy with Him. THE QUESTION IS THIS: ARE YOU WHO YOU SAY YOU ARE OR ARE YOU SOMETHING ELSE?

Download or read book Unzipped written by Sunday Antai and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardly are there any issues in life that are more emotive and contentious than religion. Part of the reason for this is that rarely do any two religions agree on most of their teachings about deity and humanity: there is so much divisiveness and mutual distrust. Christianity is not spared these mutual acrimony and disaffection, even within itself. Thus, there are inside it such characterizations as Orthodox, Pentecostals, Evangelicals, etc, with each claiming superiority of spirituality over and above one another, and citing portions of the Bible to argue its positions. But this has erected confusion in the minds of many, who find it difficult to dissect what are right or wrong doctrines in the face of one group of Christians accepting certain practices or beliefs, while another group condemns the same things. Unzipped! traces these doctrinal crises, in part, to misrepresentation of the two parts of the Bible: Old and New Testaments, submitting that biblical Christianity is all about what Christ and His disciples taught and practiced. In other words, it posits that if Christ and His apostles did not teach or practice a doctrine, Christians do not have to bother about it. The book challenges all who call on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ to look up to, and live for Him, as the author and finisher of their faith. It therefore contends that biblical Christianity, as opposed to its religious version, does not admit of syncretism.

Book excerpt: An edgy and ambitious debut by a powerful new voice in contemporary literary fiction Monday, Kierk wakes up. Once a rising star in neuroscience, Kierk Suren is now homeless, broken by his all-consuming quest to find a scientific theory of consciousness. But when he’s offered a spot in a prestigious postdoctoral program, he decides to rejoin society and vows not to self-destruct again. Instead of focusing on his work, however, Kierk becomes obsessed with another project—investigating the sudden and suspicious death of a colleague. As his search for truth brings him closer to Carmen Green, another postdoc, their list of suspects grows, along with the sense that something sinister may be happening all around them. The Revelations, not unlike its main character, is ambitious and abrasive, challenging and disarming. Bursting with ideas, ranging from Greek mythology to the dark realities of animal testing, to some of the biggest unanswered questions facing scientists today, The Revelations is written in muscular, hypnotic prose, and its cyclically dreamlike structure pushes the boundaries of literary fiction. Erik Hoel has crafted a stunning debut of rare power—an intense look at cutting-edge science, consciousness, and human connection.

Book excerpt: The dark and dirty secrets of the mating and dating scene are exposed as Courtney Weaver hears all from her friends--and tells a few secrets of her own--in this true-life Bridget Jones meets Tales of the City. Sexuality in the '90s is a different animal: While men and women have been given the tools to communicate, they haven't been given the instructions. With audacious, witty, and sometimes scandalous writing, Courtney Weaver's Unzipped follows her life and those of her friends as they attempt to navigate the waters of intimate relationships without paddles. Weaver, whose column "Unzipped" was "Salon magazine's most popular feature, lends an indulgent ear to her friends as they wrestle with the lure of having sex with exes, predict bedroom prowess from kisses, and search for the most tactful way to reclaim favorite pieces of clothing left behind after messy breakups. Harriet is convinced that a concrete set of '50s-era rules is the only way to catch a mate, while Jemma turns to her own shocking set of rules in order to fulfill her desires. Meanwhile, Weaver's single-mom hairstylist Marie lends a sympathetic ear and an acerbic tongue when she too uncovers a sexual scandal in her own backyard. In the tradition of Tales of the City, but peopled with characters you might actually meet, Unzipped is a work of narrative nonfiction that explores all the complexities of sex in the '90s.

This book was released on 2005-03-04 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One can not understand the Sixties without understanding the Fifties. The Fifties were the first time the American youth had excess freedom. Before the 50s they worked on the family farm; dusk till dawn, slaved in the sweat shops, 12 ours a day, six days a week; starved in the depression; and fought not knowing it they would be alive the next day in World War II and the Korean War. Than, suddenly, came the fifties. First there were the beatniks lead by their spiritual leader Williams Burrough, than the bad boys of rock and roll Elvis, Johnny Cochran, and Jerry Lee Lewis prevailed. This excess freedom, led to freedom to think, freedom to question, freedom to challenge. In the sixties, the peaceful non-violent Civil Rights Movement, progressed to the Black Power and the Black Panthers. The Civil Rights Movement was followed by the creeping involvement in Vietnam, first with military advisors, than massive troop deployments to Vietnam resulting in death, violence, destruction, and then disillusion. And complementing the war, initially, the educational teach-ins led to massive antiwar demonstrations, to the Weathermen busting windows on Michigan Ave and planting bombs in the Capital. This all digressed to the second civil war which recently resurfaced with the Iraq War, I afraid now is progressing to the third civil war. Throughout the book we follow the characters lives from romantic innocence to reality to Expressionism. Some fighting in Vietnam, some protesting the war, some marching for civil rights, friendships destroyed and than repaired. Some lives lost, some destroyed, some survived, but all caught up in the hubris characterized by a gross failure of governmental leadership. Those betrayed the most have their names on a black granite wall in Washington DC.

Download or read book Mad Men Unzipped written by Karen E. Dill-Shackleford and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of the Mad Men fan phenomenon: how the show and its fans distinguished themselves in a market where it’s hard to make an impression, not unlike the driven ad execs at the center of the show. In this book, four media psychologists who also just happen to be dedicated Mad Men fans explore how the show’s viewers make meaning from fictional drama. The authors also interviewed several contemporary advertising industry professionals, getting their inside view of the business in its modern guise and what they make of the show’s vision of their past. The result is cutting-edge psychological research that crunches and codes online fan commentary to understand the ways that people use the show to debate complex social issues, from sex and alcohol to gender roles, parenting, and advertising itself. What do the 1960s mean to us today, and how well does the twenty-first century measure up against that famously turbulent decade? Which characters do fans identify with—and which ones do they love to hate? How would fans unfurl the Mad Men storylines if they were in charge? What makes a good man, and has it changed over time? How should husbands and wives treat each other, and how should parents treat their children? In answering these questions, the authors explore not just the online commentary but also Mad Men fans’ fan fiction, cosplay, cocktail making, and vintage furniture collecting. Whether tweeting as one of the main characters (or just a lowly mail clerk), setting Peggy up with the man who’ll treat her right, or figuring out just which “Mad Man” they are at heart, fans integrate the show into their lives and use it to make sense of their own choices in work, leisure, and love.

Book excerpt: "If catastrophe is not representable according to the narrative explanations which would ‘make sense’ of history, then making sense of ourselves and charting the future are not impossible. But we are, as it were, marked for life, and that mark is insuperable, irrecoverable. It becomes the condition by which life is risked, by which the question of whether one can move, and with whom, and in what way is framed and incited by the irreversibility of loss itself."—Judith Butler, from the Afterword "Loss is a wonderful volume: powerful and important, deeply moving and intellectually challenging at the same time, ethical and not moralistic. It is one of those rare collections that work as a multifaceted whole to map new areas for inquiry and pose new questions. I found myself educated and provoked by the experience of participating in an ongoing dialogue."—Amy Kaplan, author of The Anarchy of Empire in the Making of U.S. Culture
