Book Assessing Pain and Communication in Disorders of Consciousness

Download or read book Assessing Pain and Communication in Disorders of Consciousness written by Camille Chatelle and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2015-12-14 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances in medicine for resuscitation and care have led to an increased number of patients that survive severe brain damage but who are poorly responsive and non-communicative at the bedside. This has led to a striking need to better characterize, understand, and manage this population who present a real challenge for the assessment of pain and for planning treatment. This edited collection provides clinicians with a guide to recent developments in research on pain perception and assessment, and the detection of consciousness and communication in patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC). With contributions from leading global researchers, the book gives an overview of issues concerning the assessment of pain. It also covers the development of suitable tools both to improve pain management and to detect consciousness and communication in these patients, to influence their prognosis and treatment, and their quality of life. Methodological and ethical issues concerning the implication for future research are also considered. The book will be an invaluable guide for clinicians, medics and therapists working in rehabilitation and acute care, particularly in the demanding field of pain perception, pain assessment and detection of consciousness and communication in patients with DOC. It will also be useful for students and researchers in neuropsychology and medical sciences.

Book Victorian Pain

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rachel Ablow
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2020-06-09
  • ISBN : 0691202885
  • Pages : 206 pages

Download or read book Victorian Pain written by Rachel Ablow and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nineteenth century introduced developments in science and medicine that made the eradication of pain conceivable for the first time. This new understanding of pain brought with it a complex set of moral and philosophical dilemmas. If pain serves no obvious purpose, how do we reconcile its existence with a well-ordered universe? Examining how writers of the day engaged with such questions, Victorian Pain offers a compelling new literary and philosophical history of modern pain. Rachel Ablow provides close readings of novelists Charlotte Brontë and Thomas Hardy and political and natural philosophers John Stuart Mill, Harriet Martineau, and Charles Darwin, as well as a variety of medical, scientific, and popular writers of the Victorian age. She explores how discussions of pain served as investigations into the status of persons and the nature and parameters of social life. No longer conceivable as divine trial or punishment, pain in the nineteenth century came to seem instead like a historical accident suggesting little or nothing about the individual who suffers. A landmark study of Victorian literature and the history of pain, Victorian Pain shows how these writers came to see pain as a social as well as a personal problem. Rather than simply self-evident to the sufferer and unknowable to anyone else, pain was also understood to be produced between persons—and even, perhaps, by the fictions they read.

Book Understanding Physiotherapy Research

Download or read book Understanding Physiotherapy Research written by Chris Littlewood and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-26 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Physiotherapy Research by Littlewood and May is an introductory level text that aims to be accessible and understandable to all physiotherapists who appreciate the need to integrate research evidence into their practice. The requirement for physiotherapists to engage with evidence-based practice has never been more apparent and the benefits of such an approach are clear. Evidence derived from research is a cornerstone of evidence-based practice, but before such evidence can be incorporated into an evidence-based paradigm, it should be appraised and its trustworthiness and applicability considered. This means that evidence-based physiotherapy practitioners need to be aware of the inherent strengths and limitations of research studies and what these mean for their practice. However, this is not always a straightforward process and it is not uncommon for both novice and experienced physiotherapists to become lost in the language of research. To facilitate the evolution of evidence-based physiotherapy practice, this book aims to bridge the gap by presenting a clinically focused range of methodological discussions in relation to specific research study designs in physiotherapy. The intention of the book is to offer a platform upon which readers can develop their understanding of meaningful critical appraisal and consequently gain confidence when reading published research.

Book Logicism and the Philosophy of Language

Download or read book Logicism and the Philosophy of Language written by Arthur Sullivan and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2003-03-04 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Logicism and the Philosophy of Language brings together the core works by Gottlob Frege and Bertrand Russell on logic and language. In their separate efforts to clarify mathematics through the use of logic in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, Frege and Russell both recognized the need for rigorous and systematic semantic analysis of language. It was their turn to this style of analysis that would establish the philosophy of language as an autonomous area of inquiry. This anthology gathers together these foundational writings, and frames them with an extensive historical introduction. This is a collection for anyone interested in questions about truth, meaning, reference, and logic, and in the application of formal analysis to these concepts.

Some of the subjects discussed in Pain and Pleasure include: self-mutilation, sexual satisfaction, “hysterical anesthesia,” false pregnancy, laughter, homosexuality, and dream analysis.
