Book excerpt: This book was written to provide a comprehensive survey of the current state-of-the-art information in coal preparation, with particular emphasis on coal desulfrization. The primary audience for this book will be practising coal preparation engineers who need complete information about all of the coal preparation and desulphurization technologies that are available now, or that may be available in the future. It will also be valuable for coal researchers who need details and comparative data for cutting-edge technologies that are still under development. The main emphasis is on physical coal preparation, but chapters also include chemical and biological technologies that are under development, but not yet used in industrial practice. Along with the successful technologies, also included are details of processes and techniques that were attempted, but were subsequently abandoned, along with discussions of the reasons they were abandoned.

Book Biological Coal Desulfurization

Download or read book Biological Coal Desulfurization written by Ming Le and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sulfur removal from coal before combustion is of considerable interest to avoid emission of oxides of sulfur(SOx). Chemical and physical methods have been developed for removing the inorganic sulfur component in coal. This component is generally associated with pyrites(FeS2). However, no commercial methods have been developed for the removal of the organic sulfur conponent. This study describes microbial methods for removing organically bound sulfur from coal. The specific goals of this study were to ascertain whether a robust biologically active population such as activated sludge biomass can remove organic sulfur from coal and to devise sulfur analytical methods that are less cumbersome than the accepted standards for screening research results. Dibenzothiophene is used in isolating microorganisms that use sulfur as the sole source for growth. It was found that about 55% sulfur can be removed by activated sludge in shaker flasks from a coal which was previously treated to remove inorganic sulfur(IBC-108). A no cycling leaching reactor with activated sludge removed 50% sulfur from the same type of coal. Almost 72% sulfur is removed by A-i, S-Dl, T3-2 and Ar-i mixed cultures. It was also found that about 25 to 29% sulfur can be removed by different cultures from a commercially prepared washed coal in which the pyritic and organic sulfur have not been altered. The application of ion-chromatography and atomic spectrometry in analyzing sulfate, pyritic sulfur, organic sulfur and total sulfur following ASTM extraction can achieve easier and quicker sulfur determinations without sacrificing accuracy and reproducibility.

Book Processing and Utilization of High sulfur Coals IV

Download or read book Processing and Utilization of High sulfur Coals IV written by Patrick R. Dugan and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1991 with total page 852 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings comprise peer-reviewed articles summarizing the most recent progress made by many of the leaders of high-sulfur coal research and development in the past two years. Four papers cover the conversion of coals to liquid and gaseous products both as a means of removing sulfur and for increasing the utility and value of the coal. Improvements in coal cleaning technology by application of biological, physical and chemical processes, as well as combinations of these methods are reported. Methods of beneficiation including the emerging electrochemical and ultrasonic approaches are also presented. Several papers cover the fundamentals and applications of flotation as a technique for separating the sulfur from the carbon content of coal once the sulfur has been liberated from the coal matrix. One paper describes a microbial process for removing solubilized iron and sulfur (as sulfate) that have been liberated from coal. Eight contributions deal with the various aspects of cleaning potential atmospheric contaminants from coal combustion gasses. The book will be of particular interest and benefit to researchers, graduate students and all persons involved in coal production, processing and utilization; public policy making and administration related to energy conservation, economic development, and environmental protection; and investors in industry and new technology.

Book Development of a Process for Producing an Ashless Low Sulfur Fuel from Coal

Download or read book Development of a Process for Producing an Ashless Low Sulfur Fuel from Coal written by Ibrahim R. Vohra and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report cummarizes the experimental investigation of sulfur removal from the residual solids of the Solvent Refined Coal Process. The residue, called coal minerals, contains various amounts of the ferrous oxide, silica, carbon and alumina. The preferential oxidation technique for sulfur removal was tested on the coal mineral for the oxidation of ferrous sulfide. The process is reviewed and the results reported in the thesis.

Book Biodesulfurization Techniques

Download or read book Biodesulfurization Techniques written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an alternative to post-combustion desulfurization of coal and pre-combustion desulfurization using physicochemical techniques, the microbial desulfurization of coal may be accomplished through the use of microbial cultures that, in an application of various microbial species, may remove both the pyritic and organic fractions of sulfur found in coal. Organisms have been isolated that readily depyritize coal but often at prohibitively low rates of desulfurization. Microbes have also been isolated that may potentially remove the organic-sulfur fraction present in coal (showing promise when acting on organic sulfur model compounds such as dibenzothiophene). The isolation and study of microorganisms demonstrating a potential for removing organic sulfur from coal has been undertaken in this project. Additionally, the organisms and mechanisms by which coal is microbially depyritized has been investigated. Three cultures were isolated that grew on dibenzothiophene (DBT), a model organic-sulfur compound, as the sole sulfur source. These cultures (UMX3, UMX9, and IGTS8) also grew on coal samples as the sole sulfur source. Numerous techniques for pretreating and ''cotreating'' coal for depyritization were also evaluated for the ability to improve the rate or extent of microbial depyritization. These include prewashing the coal with various solvents and adding surfactants to the culture broth. Using a bituminous coal containing 0.61% (w/w) pyrite washed with organic solvents at low slurry concentrations (2% w/v), the extent of depyritization was increased approximately 25% in two weeks as compared to controls. At slurry concentrations of 20% w/v, a tetrachloroethylene treatment of the coal followed by depyritization with Thiobacillus ferrooxidans increased both the rate and extent of depyritization by approximately 10%.
