Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wouldn’t you like to know today the standard by which you will be judged in eternity tomorrow? That is exactly what Jesus does in the greatest sermon ever told, The Sermon on the Mount. Jesus said, “For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven,” (Mt 5:20). This “opener” provides the basis for His sermon which spans three chapters in Matthew. In it, Jesus provides for us a comparison between two kingdoms: the kingdom of heaven and the kingdom of self. In His sermon, Jesus gives us all insight into what a true Christian looks like, acts like, sounds like, and even thinks like. The Pharisees were known for their strict adherence to the law and their traditions. Jesus makes it clear to them and to us in this sermon, that adherence to the law will not count for eternity. Only by clothing oneself in Christ’s righteousness can one hope for eternal life. The world and even the Church at times, attempts to redefine a Christian in a way that “cheapens” Christianity to make it more palatable and pleasing to the un-believer. Pastor and Martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer called this “cheap grace.” But the true Christian will not be measured by the world’s or even the church’s standards. Each and every person will stand before a righteous Judge, and be made to give an account for his or her life according to God’s Word. This book is a line-by-line explanation of Christ’s expectations for every person who professes to be saved by the blood of Jesus Christ. In essence, it is a manual to help us all to understand what it means to be a Christian.

Book The Trouble with Textbooks

Download or read book The Trouble with Textbooks written by Gary A. Tobin and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2008-07-31 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School textbooks in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and elsewhere in the Arab and Muslim worlds are filled with anti-Western and anti-Israel propaganda. Most readers will be shocked to discover that history and geography textbooks widely used in America's elementary and secondary classrooms contain some of the very same inaccuracies about Jews, Judaism, and Israel. Did you know that 'there is no record of any important Jewish contribution to the sciences?' (World Civilizations, Thomson Wadsworth). Or that 'Christianity was started by a young Palestinian named Jesus?' (The World, Scott Foresman/Pearson). Supplemental materials and other classroom influences are even worse. The Trouble with Textbooks exposes the poor scholarship and untruths in textbooks about Jews and Israel. The problems uncovered in this ground-breaking analysis are instructive, and illustrate the need for reform in the way textbooks are developed, written, marketed, and distributed. Substitute another area_how we teach American history, Western civilization, or comparative religion_and we have another, equally intriguing case study. The Trouble with Textbooks shows what can go terribly wrong in discussing religion, geography, culture, or history_and in this case_all of them. The Trouble with Textbooks tells a cautionary tale for all readers, whatever their background, of how textbooks that Americans depend on to infuse young people with the values for good citizenship and to help acculturate students into the multicultural salad that is American life, instead disparage some groups and teach historical distortions. With millions of young people using these textbooks each year, the denigration of some should be a concern for all.

Book The Myth of the Untroubled Therapist

Download or read book The Myth of the Untroubled Therapist written by Marie Adams and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Therapists are often expected to be immune to the kind of problems that they help clients through. This book serves to demonstrate that this is certainly not the case: they are no more resistant to difficult and unexpected personal circumstances than anyone else. In this book Marie Adams looks into the kind of problems that therapists can be afraid to face in their own lives, including divorce, bereavement, illness, depression and anxiety and uses the experience of others to examine the best ways of dealing with them. The Myth of the Untroubled Therapist looks at the lives of forty practitioners to learn how they coped during times of personal strife. CBT, psychoanalytic, integrative and humanistic therapists from an international array of backgrounds were interviewed about how they believed their personal lives affected their work with clients. Over half admitted to suffering from depression since entering the profession and many continued practising while ill or under great stress. Some admitted to using their work as a ‘buffer’ against their personal circumstances in an attempt to avoid focusing on their own pain. Using clinical examples, personal experience, research literature and the voices of the many therapists interviewed, Adams challenges mental health professionals to take a step back and consider their own well-being as a vital first step to promoting insight and change in those they seek to help. Linking therapists’ personal histories to their choice of career, The Myth of the Untroubled Therapist pinpoints some of the key elements that may serve, and sometimes undermine, counsellors working in private practice or mental health settings. The book is ideal for counsellors and psychotherapists as well as social workers and those working within any kind of helping profession.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you becoming a better actor instead of a better Christian? Increasing numbers of believers are not experiencing the joy and life-change offered by Jesus Christ. Instead, they are frustrated and disillusioned. Their marriages are deteriorating. Their relationships with their kids are filled with conflict. They're acquiring self-destructive behaviors. Some are ready to give up on their faith altogether. And they're covering up their problems with a happy face. They are living with troubled hearts. You may be one of them. Yet Jesus said, "Do not let your heart be troubled." Is that even possible in today's world? In Hope for the Troubled Heart, Dennis Kizziar answers with an emphatic "Yes " Inspired by a gradual awakening to his own troubled heart, Dennis explains the heart from a biblical perspective, identifies the three common obstacles to a life of freedom, and shows step by step how to rediscover God's joy and peace. The pathway to the life you were meant to live begins at the core-your heart. Want to live with a heart that has been changed, freed, healed, and renewed? It's time to get to the heart of the matter
