Book excerpt: This book explores the ways in which intellectual and cultural publics from the early modern period to the postmodern present have actively constructed their cultural identities within the social processes of modernity. It brings together some of the most compelling recent writing on the public sphere by scholars in the fields of literary history, cultural studies and social theory from both sides of the Atlantic. Taken together, the essays in this collection offer a major re-examination of recent scholarship on the theory of the public sphere as developed by Jürgen Habermas. They also stand as a collective effort both to interrogate and to extend this influential model by exploring modern forms of intellectual and cultural activity in all their rich diversity and ideological complexity. Contributions range from the divided inheritance of Shakespeare publishing history to the new forms of mass-mediated cultural experience in contemporary Britain; from attempts at cultural regulation in the literary public sphere of the Romantic period to the postmodern political conflict played out in the American public sphere of the 1990s; and from varieties of religious dissent to modes of postcolonial criticism. The book furthers the dialogue between academic methodologies, fields and periods, and presents readers with a contested narrative of the key cultural and intellectual practices that have made up our modern world.

Book The History of the Book in the West 1700 1800

Download or read book The History of the Book in the West 1700 1800 written by Eleanor F. Shevlin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Influenced by Enlightenment principles and commercial transformations, the history of the book in the eighteenth century witnessed not only the final decades of the hand-press era but also developments and practices that pointed to its future: ’the foundations of modern copyright; a rapid growth in the publication, circulation, and reading of periodicals; the promotion of niche marketing; alterations to distribution networks; and the emergence of the publisher as a central figure in the book trade, to name a few.’ The pace and extent of these changes varied greatly within the different sociopolitical contexts across the western world. The volume’s twenty-four articles, many of which proffer broader theoretical implications beyond their specific focus, highlight the era’s range of developments. Complementing these articles, the introductory essay provides an overview of the eighteenth-century book and milestones in its history during this period while simultaneously identifying potential directions for new scholarship.

Book Shakespeare in Print

Download or read book Shakespeare in Print written by Andrew Murphy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-05-13 with total page 770 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Described by the TLS as 'a formidable bibliographical achievement ... destined to become a key reference work for Shakespeareans', Shakespeare in Print is now issued in a revised and expanded edition offering a wealth of new material, including a chapter which maps the history of digital editions from the earliest computer-generated texts to the very latest digital resources. Murphy's narrative offers a masterful overview of the history of Shakespeare publishing and editing, teasing out the greater cultural significance of the ways in which the plays and poems have been disseminated and received over the centuries from Shakespeare's time to our own. The opening chapters have been completely rewritten to offer close engagement with the careers of the network of publishers and printers who first brought Shakespeare to print, additional material has been added to all chapters, and the chronological appendix has been updated and expanded.

Book Spreading the Word

Download or read book Spreading the Word written by Robin Myers and published by Oak Knoll Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "How did printed material in Britain get from producer to reader? What were the mechanics of supply by which individuals from very varied social backgrounds came into contact with the print culture? These are hard questions lying at the heart of what is sometimes called the new bibliography. Distribution is a complex lines of book trade history because it leads out of the self-contained and familiar area of the printing office and bookshop, into the often baffling regions of redistribution and consumption, where the evidence is often fragmentary and difficult to work with. London, with its ever-increasing output in this period of books, pamphlets, newspapers, ballads and ephemera, was always the dominant influence on the market. In this volume, however, the contributors are almost all concerned with aspects of the local trade in different parts of the British Isles and, in one essay, the trade between London and America via Scotland. They provide a series of detailed investigations into the distribution networks which supplemented and meshed in with those based on the capital, and in doing so they give a fresh view of the developing relationship between print and society over three centuries."--

  • Author : Adam Fox

Download or read book The Press and the People written by Adam Fox and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-06-18 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Press and the People is the first full-length study of cheap print in early modern Scotland. It traces the production and distribution of ephemeral publications from the nation's first presses in the early sixteenth century through to the age of Burns in the late eighteenth. It explores the development of the Scottish book trade in general and the production of slight and popular texts in particular. Focusing on the means by which these works reached a wide audience, it illuminates the nature of their circulation in both urban and rural contexts. Specific chapters examine single-sheet imprints such as ballads and gallows speeches, newssheets and advertisements, as well as the little pamphlets that contained almanacs and devotional works, stories and songs. The study demonstrates just how much more of this literature was once printed than now survives and argues that Scotland had a much larger market for such material than has been appreciated hitherto. By illustrating the ways in which Scottish printers combined well-known titles from England with a distinctive repertoire of their own, The Press and the People transforms our understanding of popular culture in early modern Scotland and Britain more widely.
