Book The Athenian Revolution

    Book Details:
  • Author : Josiah Ober
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2020-09-01
  • ISBN : 0691217971
  • Pages : 222 pages

Download or read book The Athenian Revolution written by Josiah Ober and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where did "democracy" come from, and what was its original form and meaning? Here Josiah Ober shows that this "power of the people" crystallized in a revolutionary uprising by the ordinary citizens of Athens in 508-507 B.C. He then examines the consequences of the development of direct democracy for upper-and lower-class citizens, for dissident Athenian intellectuals, and for those who were denied citizenship under the new regime (women, slaves, resident foreigners), as well as for the general development of Greek history. When the citizens suddenly took power into their own hands, they changed the cultural and social landscape of Greece, thereby helping to inaugurate the Classical Era. Democracy led to fundamental adjustments in the basic structures of Athenian society, altered the forms and direction of political thinking, and sparked a series of dramatic reorientations in international relations. It quickly made Athens into the most powerful Greek city-state, but it also fatally undermined the traditional Greek rules of warfare. It stimulated the development of the Western tradition of political theorizing and encouraged a new conception of justice that has striking parallels to contemporary theories of rights. But Athenians never embraced the notions of inherency and inalienability that have placed the concept of rights at the center of modern political thought. Thus the play of power that constituted life in democratic Athens is revealed as at once strangely familiar and desperately foreign, and the values sustaining the Athenian political community as simultaneously admirable and terrifying.

Book Transzendentalphilosophie als System

Download or read book Transzendentalphilosophie als System written by Albert Mues and published by Schriften zur Transzendentalphilosophie. This book was released on 1989 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. August 1987 in Deutschlandsberg, Österreich, stattfand.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Thucydides

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Thucydides written by Ryan Balot and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-10 with total page 801 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Thucydides contains newly commissioned essays on Thucydides as an historian, thinker, and writer. It also features chapters on Thucydides' intellectual context and ancient reception. The creative juxtaposition of historical, literary, philosophical, and reception studies allows for a better grasp of Thucydides' complex project and its intellectual context, while at the same time providing a comprehensive introduction to the author's ideas. The volume is organized into four sections of papers: History, Historiography, Political Theory, and Context and Reception. It therefore bridges traditionally divided disciplines. The authors engaged to write the forty chapters for this volume include both well-known scholars and less well-known innovators, who bring fresh ideas and new points of view. Articles avoid technical jargon and long footnotes, and are written in an accessible style. Finally, the volume includes a thorough introduction prefacing each paper, as well as several maps and an up-to-date bibliography that will enable further study. The Oxford Handbook of Thucydides offers a comprehensive introduction to a thinker and writer whose simultaneous depth and innovativeness have been the focus of intense literary and philosophical study since ancient times.

Book Jews and Christians

    Book Details:
  • Author : William Horbury
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2006-07-15
  • ISBN : 0567389561
  • Pages : 351 pages

Download or read book Jews and Christians written by William Horbury and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2006-07-15 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jewish-Christian contact and controversy were central to early Christian experience. An understanding of this interaction and its continuation over the centuries is also central to any true understanding of the history of Christianity and of the history of Judaism. The twelve chapters of this book deal especially with the interconnected subjects of polemic and biblical interpretation. Nine are concerned with the ancient world, beginning with post-exilic Jewish writing and the New Testament and going on to later pagan, Jewish and Christian controversies. Three concentrate on medieval and early modern Jewish controversies. William Horbury makes an important contribution to the understanding of abundant primary sources, both Jewish and Christian, which remain in large part under-explored.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This exhaustive and important study of the meaning of Moses in the Bible demonstrates conclusively 'the Mosaicization of the canon'... Nohrnberg possesses a remarkable typological imagination. No summary can do justice to the sheer brilliance of the congruities and disparities he discovers on every page." -- Journal of Religion "LIKE UNTO MOSES proposes a series of challenging perspectives on theprocess of canon-formation in the Bible. James Nohrnberg's ability totrace connections among different elements of the biblical corpus isunflaggingly resourceful, sometimes provocative, and often deeplyinstructive." -- Robert Alter "... an insightful study of the traditions of Moses in the Bible." -- Choice "This is a formidably argued, large book.... It is also certainly the most sophisticated book on Moses and one of the most sophisticated readings of the Bible which I have ever had the pleasure of reading.... I think it is a brilliant achievement and would recommend it to every reader of the Bible." -- R. P. Carroll, The Society for Old Testament Study Book List The Moses of the Bible is a veiled figure who exists both inside and outside the text which describes and defines him. "Moses" is a creation of Israelite literary and scriptural tradition, an ideological construct, a reinvented memory, a projection of what Israel wished to see in Moses. Nohrnberg examines the texts of "Moses" for their representation of the tradition's self-doubt and its revisionary, "deuteronomic" content.

Book Three Lives

Download or read book Three Lives written by Oliver Matuschek and published by Pushkin Press. This book was released on 2011-11-29 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a great wealth of newly available sources, this definitive biography recounts the eventful life of a great writer spoilt by success—a life lived in the shadow of two world wars, and which ended tragically in a suicide pact. Matuschek examines three major phases in the life of the world-famous Austrian author—his years of apprenticeship, his years of success as a professional working writer in Salzburg, and finally his years of exile in Britain, the USA and Brazil. Including the sort of personal detail conspicuously absent from Zweig's memoir, and incorporating newly discovered documents, Matuschek's biography offers us a privileged view into the private world of the master of psychological insight.
