Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today’s fast-moving world and tough competitive day-to-day life, the youth hardly find time for remembrance of our rich heritage and past. This becomes more important when the nation celebrates seventy fifth year of independence. The fight against colonial rule in India constitutes a unique narrative, one which is not marred by violence. Rather a narrative that is full of variegated stories of valour, bravery, satyagraha, dedication, and supreme sacrifice for the freedom of the motherland. This book on unsung warriors is an attempt to recall and remember forgotten heroes of our freedom struggle, many of whom might be renowned yet unknown to the new generation. The aim of recreating and bringing forth stories, which lay as faded memories of the past, shall serve as a medium of inspiration and encouragement for the coming generations.

Book India in the Shadows of Empire

Download or read book India in the Shadows of Empire written by Mithi Mukherjee and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-11-25 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains the postcolonial Indian polity by presenting an alternative historical narrative of the British Empire in India and India's struggle for independence. It pursues this narrative along two major trajectories. On the one hand, it focuses on the role of imperial judicial institutions and practices in the making of both the British Empire and the anti-colonial movement under the Congress, with the lawyer as political leader. On the other hand, it offers a novel interpretation of Gandhi's non-violent resistance movement as being different from the Congress. It shows that the Gandhian movement, as the most powerful force largely responsible for India's independence, was anchored not in western discourses of political and legislative freedom but rather in Indic traditions of renunciative freedom, with the renouncer as leader. This volume offers a comprehensive and new reinterpretation of the Indian Constitution in the light of this historical narrative. The book contends that the British colonial idea of justice and the Gandhian ethos of resistance have been the two competing and conflicting driving forces that have determined the nature and evolution of the Indian polity after independence.

Book The Kalam Effect

Download or read book The Kalam Effect written by P M Nair and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2013-01-09 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A. P. J. Abdul Kalam became President of India in July 2002. He came to the highest office in the land with doubts being cast on the wisdom of appointing a non-politician, even if it was someone as distinguished as him (he is a recipient of the Bharat Ratna for his work on India's space and defence programmes), to the post. What followed, however, was a remarkable presidency that in the next five years transformed the way people looked at this office, and made Kalam popular in a way few politicians have been. Rashtrapati Bhavan became a much more accessible place in his time, and his enthusiasm for his favourite cause-a developed and strong India-infected all those who came in touch with him. While the reasons for his popularity will be analysed for a long time, P.M. Nair, who was his Secretary, shows through a series of vignettes in The Kalam Effect some of the probable causes. One of them being that Kalam is just a very special human being. P.M. Nair had a long and varied career in the IAS, which he joined in 1967. In July 2002 he was appointed Secretary to the President and continued in that position all through the five years of A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's tenure at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Book The Indian Parliament

Download or read book The Indian Parliament written by B.L. Shankar and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-12-15 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Parliament is the visible face of democracy in India. It is the epicentre of political life, public institutions of great verve, and a regime of Rights. In a first-of-its-kind study, this book delves into the lived experience of the Indian Parliament by focusing on three distinct phases—the 1950s, the 1970s, and the 1990s and beyond. The authors argue against the widely held notion of its ongoing decline, and demonstrate how it has repeatedly, and successfully, responded to India's changing needs in six decades of existence. This comprehensive and authoritative study examines the changing social composition and differing modes of representation that make up the Lok Sabha and critically explores its relation with the Rajya Sabha. Developments in the institutional complex of the Parliament, including the functioning of the Opposition and the Speaker are traced over time, along with the processes of legislation and accountability. Major debates in the House are scrutinized, and much of the analysis is based on empirical data gathered from surveys circulated among prominent politicians and public intellectuals. It also addresses the intricate issue of relations between the Judiciary and the Parliament. In its in-depth focus on the Lok Sabha, the volume highlights the way the Parliament has come to encompass India's proverbial diversity. It especially demonstrates the route this institution has taken to engage with fractious issues of diverging linguistic and regional demands.
