In Songs of the Unsung Tapscott shares his life story, recalling his childhood in Houston, moving with his family to Los Angeles in 1943, learning music, and his early professional career. He describes forming the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra in 1961 and later the Union of God's Musicians and Artists Ascension to preserve African American music and serve the community. Tapscott also recounts his interactions with the Black Panthers and law enforcement, the Watts riots, his work in Hollywood movie studios, and stories about his famous musician-activist friends. Book excerpt: For years, emotions?both good and bad?have been pouring out of me, releasing themselves onto scrap papers, notebooks, napkins and computer screens taking shape as melody-less songs. Call them poems, call them lyrics, call them what you will; the thoughts once formed and molded into rhythms and rhymes just could not be lost forever or kept to clutter in my mind. These bits of my heart were originally written for no one?s eyes but my own, but this book?which in effect, I have been writing for more than ten years?changes that. Love them, hate them, maybe feel inspired? If nothing else with each song you?ve gained a tiny window into a stranger?s mind on some particular day, feeling some particular way, worrying about some particular thing, and perhaps you will find that we are not such strangers after all. This collection of unsung song lyrics is for those looking for answers, those looking for questions, the young at heart, the old souls, curious minds and inspired musicians. I invite you all into my heart and into this record of my life for the last decade.

Book Strike Songs of the Depression

Download or read book Strike Songs of the Depression written by Timothy P. Lynch and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2009-11-12 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Depression brought unprecedented changes for American workers and organized labor. As the economy plummeted, employers cut wages and laid off workers, while simultaneously attempting to wrest more work from those who remained employed. In mills, mines, and factories workers organized and resisted, striking for higher wages, improved working conditions, and the right to bargain collectively. As workers walked the picket line or sat down on the shop floor, they could be heard singing. This book examines the songs they sang at three different strikes- the Gastonia, North Carolina, textile mill strike (1929), Harlan County, Kentucky, coal mining strike (1931-32), and Flint, Michigan, automobile sit-down strike (1936-37). Whether in the Carolina Piedmont, the Kentucky hills, or the streets of Michigan, the workers' songs were decidedly class-conscious. All show the workers' understanding of the necessity of solidarity and collective action. In Flint the strikers sang: The trouble in our homestead Was brought about this way When a dashing corporation Had the audacity to say You must all renounce your union And forswear your liberties, And we'll offer you a chance To live and die in slavery. As a shared experience, the singing of songs not only sent the message of collective action but also provided the very means by which the message was communicated and promoted. Singing was a communal experience, whether on picket lines, at union rallies, or on shop floors. By providing the psychological space for striking workers to speak their minds, singing nurtured a sense of community and class consciousness. When strikers retold the events of their strike, as they did in songs, they spread and preserved their common history and further strengthened the bonds among themselves. In the strike songs the roles of gender were pronounced and vivid. Wives and mothers sang out of their concerns for home, family, and children. Men sang in the name of worker loyalty and brotherhood, championing male solidarity and comaraderie. Informed by the new social history, this critical examination of strike songs from three different industries in three different regions gives voice to a group too often deemed as inarticulate. This study, the only book-length examination of this subject, tells history "from the bottom up" and furthers an understanding of worker culture during the tumultuous Depression years.

Fold your gentle majesty into lone soliloquies.” There are also eighty songs, inspired by Jim Morrison, and fifty songs worth of lyrics inspired by Emily Dickinson, and a tribute to others’ section. Book Songs of the Serbian People

Download or read book Songs of the Serbian People written by Milne Holton and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2014-06-27 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early nineteenth century, Vuk Karadzic, a Serb scholar and linguist, collected and eventually published transcriptions of the traditional oral poetry of the South Slavs. It was a monumental and unprecedented undertaking. Karadzic gathered and heard performances of the rich songs of Balkan peasants, outlaws, and professional singers and their rebel heroes. His four volumes constitute the classic anthology of Balkan oral poetry, treasured for nearly two centuries by readers of all literatures, and influential to such literary giants as Goethe, Merimee, Pushkin, Mickiewicz, and Sir Walter Scott. This edition of the songs offers the most complete and authoritative translations ever assembled in English. Holton and Mihailovich, leading scholars of Slavic literature, have preserved here the unique meter and rhythm at the heart of Serbian oral poetry, as well as the idiom of the original singers. Extensive notes and comments aid the reader in understanding the poems, the history they record and the oral tradition that lies beneath them, the singers and their audience. The songs contain seven cycles, identified here in sections titled: Songs Before History, Before Kosovo, the Battle of Kosovo, Marko Karadzic, Under the Turks, Songs of the Outlaws, and Songs of the Serbian Insurrection. The editors have selected the best known and most representative songs from each of the cycles. A complete biography is also provided.
