Book excerpt: Over the next decade, two out of every three companies will face the challenge of their corporate lives: redefining their core business. Buffeted by global competition and facing an uncertain future, more and more executives will realize that they must make fundamental changes in their core even as they continue delivering the goods and services that keep them in business today. Unstoppable shows these managers how to look deep within their organizations to find undervalued, unrecognized, or underutilized assets that can serve as new platforms for sustainable growth. Drawing on more than thirty interviews with CEOs from companies such as De Beers, American Express, and Samsung, it shows readers how to recognize when the core needs reinvention and how to deploy the "hidden assets" that can be the basis for tomorrow's growth. Building on the author's previous books, Profit from the Core and Beyond the Core, this book shows how any company in crisis can transform itself to become truly unstoppable.

Download or read book Drugs Money and Secret Handshakes written by Robin Feldman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-11 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the warped world of prescription drug pricing, generic drugs can cost more than branded ones, old drugs can be relaunched at astronomical prices, and low-cost options are shut out of the market. In Drugs, Money and Secret Handshakes, Robin Feldman shines a light into the dark corners of the pharmaceutical industry to expose a web of shadowy deals in which higher-priced drugs receive favorable treatment and patients are channeled toward the most expensive medicines. At the center of this web are the highly secretive middle players who establish coverage levels for patients and negotiate with drug companies. By offering lucrative payments to these middle players (as well as to doctors and hospitals), drug companies ensure that inexpensive drugs never gain traction. This system of perverse incentives has delivered the kind of exorbitant drug prices - and profits - that everyone loves except for those who pay the bills.

Download or read book Unstoppable written by Bill Nye and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2015-11-10 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just as World War II called an earlier generation to greatness, so the climate crisis is calling today's rising youth to action: to create a better future. In UNSTOPPABLE, Bill Nye crystallizes and expands the message for which he is best known and beloved. That message is that with a combination of optimism and scientific curiosity, all obstacles become opportunities, and the possibilities of our world become limitless. With a scientist's thirst for knowledge and an engineer's vision of what can be, Bill Nye sees today's environmental issues not as insurmountable, depressing problems but as chances for our society to rise to the challenge and create a cleaner, healthier, smarter world. We need not accept that transportation consumes half our energy, and that two-thirds of the energy you put into your car is immediately thrown away out the tailpipe. We need not accept that dangerous emissions are the price we must pay for a vibrant economy and a comfortable life. Above all, we need not accept that we will leave our children a planet that is dirty, overheated, and depleted of resources. As Bill shares his vision, he debunks some of the most persistent myths and misunderstandings about global warming. When you are done reading, you'll be enlightened and empowered. Chances are, you'll be smiling, too, ready to join Bill and change the world. In Unstoppable: Harnessing Science to Change the World, the New York Times bestselling author of Undeniable: Evolution and the Science of Creation and former host of "Bill Nye the Science Guy" issues a new challenge to today's generation: to make a cleaner, more efficient, and happier world. Praise for UNDENIABLE: "With his charming, breezy, narrative style, Bill empowers the reader to see the natural world as it is, not as some would wish it to be. He does it right. And, as I expected, he does it best." -Neil deGrasse Tyson, Ph.D, host of COSMOS "Bill Nye, 'the Science Guy,' has become a veritable cultural icon....[T]he title of his new book on evolution...[is] 'Undeniable,' because, yes, there are many Americans who still deny what Darwin and other scientists long ago proved." -Frank Bruni, The New York Times "With a jaunty bow tie and boyish enthusiasm, Bill Nye the Science Guy has spent decades decoding scientific topics, from germs to volcanoes, for television audiences....In his new book, Nye delights in how [evolution] helps to unlock the mysteries of everything from bumblebees to human origins to our place in the universe." -National Geographic "When it comes to Bill Nye, 'Science Guy' doesn't even begin to cover it. When he's not being summoned to act as a voice of reason for news outlets or leading meetings as CEO of the Planetary Society, he is living the life of a best-selling author....His recently published book, 'Undeniable: Evolution and the Science of Creation,' enlightens readers while using a conversational, educational tone. After all, it's his ability to break down even the most complicated topics into bite-size pieces that made him such a hit on his '90s children's show 'Bill Nye, the Science Guy.'" -The Boston Globe "Mr. Nye writes briskly and accessibly...[and] makes an eloquent case for evolution."-The Wall Street Journal "Because [Bill Nye is] a scientist, he has no doubts that the 'deniers' of evolution are flat wrong. And because he's a performer, his book is fun to read and easy to absorb." -The Washington Post "Ignite your inner scientist when Nye, known for delivering geeky intel with clarity and charm, takes on one of society's most hotly debated topics (yes, still)." -Time Out New York

Book What Every Woman Should Know about Cervical Cancer

Download or read book What Every Woman Should Know about Cervical Cancer written by Nenad Markovic and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-19 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book (an updated and extended edition) is about mobilizing women and health care policy makers and providers to unite their efforts in a single strategy for fighting cervical cancer worldwide. The objective of this strategy would be to reverse cervical cancer prevalence and mortality rates among all 2.4 billion women at risk and to achieve this goal within 10-15 years of implementation. Cervical Cancer Screening (Pap test, VIA, VILI, or HPV) failed to stop cervical cancer worldwide simply because many countries could not afford developing infrastructure necessary to carry on the global strategy, and because the outreach could not accomplish the targeted 51% of the population at risk. In 2015, there is still 600,000 women getting cervical cancer annually and 300,000 of them die. Every minute one woman gets cervical cancer and every 2 minutes one woman dies from this preventable disease. In 21st Century the Information Technology (IT) Revolution has made substantial impact on medicine enabling remote points-of care, scattered around the world, to be e-connected with experts in distant medical centers and to obtain quality diagnosis and proper guidelines for curative therapy of early stages of cervical cancer. Low frequency of costly interventions needed makes IT-based screening financially and socially beneficial for mass screening. This new Mobile Health technology with the Global Strategy for Fighting Cervical Cancer is subject to elaboration in our book as the new hope when old efforts have failed to stop the world “epidemics” of this grave but preventable disease. The language is adapted for easy reading and understanding by professionals and lay-persons. This book is intended for women at risk for cervical cancer, their health care providers, health insurance companies, government responsible for making health policy and healthcare industry because all of them have special role in the new Global Strategy elaborated in details in this book.

Download or read book Political Economy In A Globalized World written by Joergen Oerstroem Moeller and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2009-02-17 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent global financial crisis illustrates how fragile economic globalization is and how vulnerable all global citizens are to economic events outside their own country. Indeed, global economics is more important for national economic growth than domestic policies. Globalization and change interact and shape the economic environment for citizens and enterprises. These essays represent observations made over a ten-year period which attempt to analyze what is happening, why it happened and the impact on global and national economic growth. Readers may not find solutions or answers to all the perplexing events in the world, but they will gain a better understanding of how global politics and economics work, and in some cases, how they should but actually do not work.

Book Childhoods in More Just Worlds

Download or read book Childhoods in More Just Worlds written by Timothy Kinard and published by Myers Education Press. This book was released on 2021-10-29 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 2023 SPE Outstanding Book Honorable Mention Those who are younger continue to be objects of injustice and inequity; those who are younger, people of color, females, and human beings living in poverty have never been included in equitable performances of justice, care, respect, and fairness. The authors in this international volume use existing social values and institutions--and the strengths of these varied perspectives--to address justice in ways that have not previously been considered. The aim is to create more just worlds for those who are young--as well as for the rest of us. The first set of chapters, Bodies, Beings, and Relations in More Just Worlds, place at the forefront the lives of those who are younger who are commonly situated in positions of invisibility, disqualification, and even erasure. In the second section, Performances of Care and Education for More Just Worlds, the authors acknowledge that needed (re)conceptualizations of those who are younger, along with appreciation for human diversity and entanglements between the so-called human and nonhuman worlds, are the foundations for more just care and education environments. From the critique of neoliberal reform discourses to reconceptualizing human relations with nonhuman animal and material worlds, care and learning environments are rethought. The set of chapters in the final section, Stir of Echoes: 20th Century Childhoods in the 21st, take-up the 20th century critical concerns with constructions of “child” that have dominated and continue to govern perspectives imposed on those who are younger. Suggestions for becoming-with those who are younger through resources like reconceptualist scholarship, Black and Indigenous Studies, and various posthuman perspectives are provided throughout. Whatever the emphasis or focus of a section or chapter, throughout the volume is the recognition that dominant discourses (e.g. neoliberal capitalism, conservativism, progressivism, human exceptionalism) and the policies they create (and that facilitate them), influence possibilities for, and limitations to, more just childhood worlds. Therefore, each section includes chapters that address these complex discourses and policy issues. The reader is invited to engage with these complexities, to become-with the various texts, and to generate unthought possibilities for childhoods in more just worlds.
